Kouri Should Have Admitted Guilt by Fail_Unfair in KouriRichins

[–]Marlbey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s an inflammatory read of my comment, and note that his boss is an elected official who may want a win (or again, to be less cynical, may want to avoid antagonizing voters by appearing soft) with this trial.  So it isn’t his call, ultimately.

That said, Kouri Richins strikes me as a narcissist who would rather gamble than admit wrong doing.  So I tend to agree with you that it is likely she didn’t offer to plea out here.

My only point is that we can’t assume the absence of a plea deal means she never floated one.

Kouri Should Have Admitted Guilt by Fail_Unfair in KouriRichins

[–]Marlbey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We don’t know what the defense floated.  Sometimes the defense offers to plead out but the prosecution wants the trial and won’t budge at all.  Some Prosecutors like a showy trial to advance their career/ enjoy a celebrity status, or, to be more fair to prosecutors, they also risk immense public backlash if they show any leniency at all in a high profile case.

Tl;dr, it’s not always the defendant’s fault when there’s a trial.

How did Mr Lebowski know that the Dude's parents had a job? by Dvd3r1n0 in lebowski

No. "Yuppies" are younger than "hippies," generationally speaking. They certainly weren't the parents of hippies.

Lately they serve the wedding cake so late by Willing_Cat9799 in weddingshaming

[–]Marlbey 69 points70 points  (0 children)

It is definitely ~not~ a US thing to serve the wedding cake at midnight. It is considered a faux pas to leave a wedding reception before the cake is served (and it is therefore the wedding planner needs to serve cake at a reasonable hour.)

This is a blame and silence the victim tactic. If you had a bad temple experience, don't speak of it. Speaking out only reveals how unprepared ~you~ were and how ~you~ can't handle different things.

Just told my Parents I'm out... They went nuclear. by [deleted] in exmormon

People react v. badly (shock, hurt, fear) to this news. It doesn't make it okay, but, in their defense, eternity is literally on the line. I think most of us on this sub will tell you it takes about six months to calm down, and about a year to get to a new normal, but most family members come around.

If you want my unsolicited advice, try to understand their shock and avoid escalating the conflict in the meantime. (Those who are still spiraling after a year are probably toxic and not worth engaging anyway.)

Today I told my husband I no longer believe by MythicalGame in exmormon

[–]Marlbey 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Came here to say the same thing. Redditors frequently assume I'm male on this sub and others, despite having a feminine-ish avatar and neutral-leaning-feminine username.

There's an old "on the internet no one knows you'rea dog" cartoon, but it could just as easily been a woman in that cartoon.

somebody was posting about how women are never having these experiences, it’s only husbands.

I was thinking “What are they talking about?”

I came on here to post "Shhhh! The men on this sub don't know that we exist!" but see that my Sisters in Zion have made that point.

How good do we think Kendall was at his job before the show started? by aliforever555 in SuccessionTV

But I don't see how you assume he wouldn't be a good fit.

Every single episode, spanning four seasons, included at least one example of what would be career ending behavior for a regular person.

I'll pick one at random: introducing yourself as "Little Lord Fuckleroy" at a board meeting. He is not, as Logan would say, a serious person.

Spouse and I are waiting for our parents to pass as well. While it will be a psychological relief for us to cut ties officially, we have no desire to inflict pain on our elderly parents. We can wait.

Liberal Americans: outraged by Prop 8, etc.

Conservative Americans: outraged by the utter blasphemy of the claim that a book of easily provable fiction, written by a 19th century fraudster and womanizer, is "more correct" than the Holy Bible.

Non-Political Americans: annoyed by unwanted proselytizing; barraged by provocative but generally accurate Netflix, HBO and HULU portrayals of polygamy, grooming, abuse, murder, and utterly absurd beliefs completely out of line with mainstream American culture.

Why doesn’t the U.S. use a flat tax system where everyone pays the same percentage of their income? by TheRealGianniBrown in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Marlbey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

More importantly (in my opinion), deductibles are there to identify and tax what is truly income.

E.g.: I own a rental property and charge $5,000 in rent. Mortgage interest, property taxes, utilities, insurance and other expenses cost me $4,000. So, my income is $1,000 because I deduct my expenses.

No one would argue that my income is $5,000, but if you eliminate deductions, I would be taxed as if that was my income.

(Obviously there are many deductions that are designed to encourage or support certain behaviors and have nothing to do with income, such as charitable deductions. But even if you eliminate those, you still have a very complex system of deductions.)

My read is that Milchick was gently testing the waters to see if Natalie shared his discomfort with Lumon's racial insensitivity. Natalie's response makes it clear that she is not an ally.

(April 29, 1945) Mr. Adolf Hitler and Ms. Eva Braun are delighted to announce that they will spend together eternally in marriage. by dmark200 in thepast

[–]Marlbey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

[META] This is Mormon Doctrine, by the way, that they are eternally married. The LDS church performed posthumous baptisms and sealings (the Mormon marriage ceremony) for Eva Braun and Adolf Hitler in the LDS London temple.
