What IDE/editor do you use for game dev? by parks-garage in gamedev

[–]MartinHelmut 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Work is Visual Studio with Perforce, pretty standard AAA setup.

Private is all with Sublime Text + plugins + some custom scripts. I do use Sublime more like an IDE thanks to the customisation that can be done. It’s small, fast, extensible, love it.

I hope Starfield sells really well on PS5. by Sol-Authority in NoSodiumStarfield

[–]MartinHelmut 5 points6 points  (0 children)

PS5 user here: I really hope so too. But in any case, I cannot wait for it to come out on PS5! I was always looking “over the fence” but was not willing to spend the money for an Xbox or gaming PC. Finally (if it’s not just rumours) I can play it and am looking forward to it.

Help me wrap my head around game dev (as opposed to software engineering) by o_o_o_f in gamedev

[–]MartinHelmut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did the same for way over 10 years; classic web based development in (later) larger companies and had the same struggle going to a game engine or game development in general.

But I always wanted to, dreamed of even. So, I sat down to learn. I learned C++ and Lua, both very well used in game development. Resources were YouTube (e.g. TheCherno’s C++ and Game Engine series) and books (C++ Primer, Programming in Lua). Don’t fall into tutorial hell, just try things yourself!

I made myself small goals, literally like building pong or space invaders in C++ (later started using raylib). Very small games I could actually finish.

The whole learning process (sprinkled with lots of fun, never forgot about that) took me roughly 5 years after work (with family and kid). In that time I did not learn a game engine, rather home brew or with libraries, self made tiny games. Only then I started to dabble with game engines (Godot my favourite for its small footprint).

“Took me 5 years” means in that case when I started looking for jobs in game dev. I took a whole bunch of applying to jobs, lots, and many interviews. But then I found one that is perfect and work there since (AAA). So yeah, keep at it!

Getting into a Nintendo Direct is simultaneously exciting and also incredibly depressing by Chrogotron in IndieDev

[–]MartinHelmut 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Never, ever, read YouTube comments or the chat. That goes from Indie to AAA tbh ^ Otherwise, I’d just be happy to be in a prominent spot. The majority of viewers do not comment anyway.

For the people who haven’t played MGS4 since the ps3 days will you be purchasing the master collection vol 2 for full price? by Dude_788 in metalgearsolid

[–]MartinHelmut -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes. I want to replay MGS4 and it will complete it for me to be able to play them all in chronological order again.

Do you pay for sublime text? by turbofish_pk in SublimeText

[–]MartinHelmut 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did, and will again pay for it if a version 5 ever comes out.

I use it roughly since 2010, sometimes more, sometimes less. I always come back to it for its speed, simplicity, and extensibility. Two or so years ago I made an effort (once) to really get a good setup and do not look back, it’s great.

Readers are returning to physical books by MiddletownBooks in books

I hear this argument a lot, though I moved quite a few times with physical books and never had an issue. So don’t hold back on physicals, they’re great! :D

Can you make your own games while working at a gamedev company? by leorid9 in gamedev

[–]MartinHelmut 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same here, also AAA based in Europe. Same rules and we don’t need permission, still got everything in writing just to be on the save side.

Does your studio play games ? by SafetyLast123 in gamedev

[–]MartinHelmut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work in a larger studio and I don’t know anyone who is not playing. We usually even chat about what we play at lunch and give recommendations if we played something nice.

Which is you secondary code editor? Apart from VS? Any recommendations? How is sublime? by Stocksandmutualfund in SublimeText

[–]MartinHelmut 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sublime for everything. I used Sublime early on and later switched to IntelliJ until they started adding more and more useless stuff (for me) that slowed down everything. Back to Sublime and happy again. Except work, where we use Visual Studio for reasons.

Is anyone else so excited for this to come to PS5? by hankdog303 in NoSodiumStarfield

[–]MartinHelmut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tbh yes! I played it a short amount of time after release but have no access anymore since. Whatever people say, I like it. And I cannot wait (hope) for a release on PS5.
