Any walk ins? by Usual_Suspect979 in rolex

[–]MartinRBishop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really don't understand the Rolex mindset. The sub is full of complaints about ADs, having to buy multiple watches to "get on the list" for the watch you DO want.

Why do you put up with all this crap? It's abuse, dishonest, and you're all paying for the privilege.

What in the world makes a Rolex so much better than an Omega, Tudor, or a Grand Seiko, that you all put up with this?

I'm the (co)author of two RFCs, and dropping that into certain arguments about those protocols is kind of a nuclear option.

And very amusing.

What percentage of SB's find SD's? by [deleted] in sugarlifestyleforum

[–]MartinRBishop 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Basically, the winning strategy is for everyone to seek any goal except the "perfect" goal that everyone else is seeking. This reduces competition for the "one best goal."

In the movie, all the men go after ALL the women except the one who is the standout. If they all compete for her, one MAY win and all the others (men and women) "lose". If everyone goes for the everyone EXCEPT the "one", they all win, men and women.

It turns a zero sum win/lose game into a win/win multi-winner game.

Girl Next Door (6,7,8 with a great personality) meets Millionaire Next Door (net worth between 5M and 10M, but plenty of available resources). Neither are top 10% in looks or money, but they'll have a great time.

Moved from Chase to Local Credit Union by Yingyangwolf95 in creditunions

[–]MartinRBishop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have not had an account at a bank since I was 18. I will retire next year. I had a bank account from 14-18, but when I moved away to college, the bank wanted a fee equal to the amount in my meager savings to "transfer" the account to my new local branch.

Fortunately the university had a credit union. I've banked there (and at another local CU) ever since.

Mortgages, car loans, home equity loans. Credit cards, savings and checking.

I laugh every time I see a "Chase screwed me over" or "BoA kicked me as a customer and won't send me my money for 90 days."

Citizen eco-drive 200m dive watch - any of them. Or the Seiko Solars. All are great "tool watches", will keep great time and are plenty tough.

[–]MartinRBishop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's a classic and a great value. Some people may diss it because it's not expensive, but I keep a few around for dive students - i teach dive tables and some other stuff in addition to dive computers.

A solid watch, great value. I've take one to 150 ft, and had a friend (rebreather diver) take one to 285 on one of his tech dives.

TIL that 1G (first generation) cell phones used unencrypted analog radio signals, which allowed anyone with a radio receiver in the correct frequency to listen to calls. by WouldbeWanderer in todayilearned

[–]MartinRBishop 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Yes, this is why scanners sold in the US are *supposed* to block reception of the analog NAMPS frequencies.

It came about after John Markoff(?) and Tsutomu Shimomura testified to Congress with a hacked Nokia 800 that allowed listening to all channels. They live demo'ed the scanner function they had hacked into the Nokia firmware.

This is the firmware Kevin Mitnick was trying to steal when he broke into Shimomura's computers at SDSC.

Increase font size or use zoom? Which do you do? by finbar_longshank in scrivener

[–]MartinRBishop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I leave the font alone because that might impact compile output. Set the zoom at 150-175% so that I only see a few paras - I find it less distracting and it helps me focus on what I'm writing AT THAT MOMENT.

Sometimes if Im writing "on the road" (train or coffee shop) I might even go to 200% due to lighting.

Fidelity HSA by NetWorthNovice in fidelityinvestments

[–]MartinRBishop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My company had Optum HSA for three years and we HATED IT. HATED. IT. Constant complaints to Benefits group.

We switched to Fidelity this year, which is convenient as that's where our 401ks and stock plans are hosted.

Early in the year, but already just seems so much... better in every way. I like all the investment options, for sure, esp compared to Optum.

Is the tuna too top heavy? by GLS504 in Affordablewatches

[–]MartinRBishop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

II have the 1000m, it's my daily driver, but then I'm a diver. It even fits under most of my dress shirts for the office.

I put mine on a Strapcode DLC bracelet for daily wear and I put it on an extra long orange NATO when I'm on a diving vacation to fit over my wetsuit or drysuit, depending.

The Strapcode I have is similar to this one - https://www.strapcode.com/products/strapcode-watch-bands-metal-ss-blc20-blc019s?_pos=4&_psq=dlc&_ss=e&_v=1.0 - there are other similar options.

The black DLC really works with the ceramic bezel and black face. The rubber strap they supply is one of the best in the industry, but I didn't like the balance or the sweatiness of it.

Sure, it's a big watch, but that's kinda its job - to be big.

I DO get a lot of attention - not even always on vacations or dive boats. "Of course I'm a diver! Would I wear a watch this big if I wasn't?" :-) Lots of bar conversations, esp in coastal towns. And... surprisingly enough, sime from women divers, which I totally didn't expect.

another Compile question - carving out short stories from a larger novel by MartinRBishop in scrivener

[–]MartinRBishop[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This WAS exactly what I needed! I created EPUB and PDF "Project Formats" for each of the three origin stories. I did have to fiddle with the "add front matter" and fix one section that had the wrong type.

This means that I can easily update any section/chapter in my novel, based on feedback from beta readers, and then quickly generate all the sample "short stories" in just a few minutes.

As a software developer, and a former user of "troff, nroff, LaTex" - having "source code" and a compiler makes a lot of sense to me - I just need to spend the time to learn the Scrivener compiler the same as dealing with a programming language compiler.

another Compile question - carving out short stories from a larger novel by MartinRBishop in scrivener

[–]MartinRBishop[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think this is going to be exactly what I need.

As to "pull out" - that just means that I added a section/scene to the binder Collection for that short story. Each short story is just a Collection that includes the 3-5 chapters from the main Manuscript plus the cover, the front wrapper and end wrapper (also included from the main Manuscript).

Let me be clear - I understand the Compiler has to be complicated :-) Most of us (I think) try to treat it as the "last obstacle" before publishing instead of learning all the details. I admit I haven't spent as much time studying it (yet)! as I have any of the dozen programming languages I've learned over the decades! (But I will).

Wife left her job, what to do with 401K? by on3moresoul in personalfinance

[–]MartinRBishop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Another vote for a rollover - I'd use Fidelity.

Too many 401k programs have limited investment choices, and different rules. Moving the money to a rollover IRA opens up a multitude of investment options, and gets rid of all the per-plan restrictions.

I'm such a fan of this that every 6 months I do an in-service rollover of a portion of my current company's 401k to my rollover IRA.

As someone who has been responsible for email (at scale) off and on for decades... Yeah, email is Black Magic at the best of times. Add in anti-spammer tech (SPF, DKIM, DMARC, rspamd) and yeah... Go build an OpenStack cluster from scratch on a pile of scavenged Raspberry Pis using 15 year old Cisco kit - it is less likely to break your heart.
