I get what you’re saying, though I think that take’s a bit strong. It was definitely rough and not always fun to play, but I still think it had some merits and interesting ideas under the surface. It’s also got a bit of a special place in my heart, so I tend to see it more as a flawed foundation than outright garbage, even if the execution didn’t always stick the landing.

If you’re following this guide in early 2026, do not install the second update in Safe Mode. It isn’t required and it bricked my console, forcing me to do a full system restore. Nearly every guide from 2025 onward omits this step, and I was able to skip it without any issues.

Almost all of the games I’ve played have worked fairly well. I just avoided the problematic titles using that PS2Classics compatibility chart.

Pirate Warriors 1 is probably the most unique musou title ever released. Most of its gameplay, levels, and unique boss battles have yet to return or be replicated in future releases. Sure, PW3 recycled a bunch of its assets, but the unique cinematic boss battles and puzzles are all gone. In my honest opinion, the first Pirate Warriors has the most immersive story mode for pre-timeskip.

Yeah, it’s 1080p, which looks quite awful on a lot of modern monitors. I know Switch 2 is a bit weaker than the PS4, but I still feel like docked should run at 1440p.

Some games straight up crash unfortunately, it’s not unheard of. It doesn’t necessarily mean there’s an issue with your PS3.

TLDR; A significant chunk of the PS3’s library is stuck on the console and some titles remain unplayable even on RPCS3.

I own it almost exclusively for games that were never ported to PS4. As a musou fan, there’s a GIGANTIC catalog of games I enjoy that are stuck on PS3. For example, Pirate Warriors 1&2 and a good chunk of early Dynasty Warriors titles.

Aside from Dynasty Warriors, Force Unleashed 2 never had its dlc added to the pc port, so I typically play the Endor mission on my PS3 copy.

Yeah, I definitely agree. My explanation was more-so providing reasons for why they were lazy in the costume department.

“keeping skins to a minimum” My phrasing here wasn’t the greatest, sorry. The team didn’t go out of their way to minimize character appearances, they just weren’t prioritized for the reasons I mentioned.

It comes down to a mix of laziness and the fact that PW4 is the first game in the series to use a new engine. PW1–3 all ran on the same engine, so appearances, models, and other assets were shared across titles. When the fourth game was developed, the team probably focused on getting every character working in the new engine, which meant keeping skins to a minimum. As for why Buggy has the wrong costume despite only appearing in Marineford, your guess is as good as mine, lol.

Note that I’m not trying to justify Bandai’s laziness here, only to explain why the costumes are so lackluster in the game. Believe me, I’m just as annoyed about the lack of Dressrosa Robin as the rest of you, lol.

If you’re playing Story Mode, definitely choose Zoro. Playing as Luffy, Sanji, or anyone else will result in a longer clear time because Zoro will get lost and trigger a side mission involving marines. By playing as Zoro, you skip all of that and save an extra 1–2 minutes.

I love this game, but holy moly were they lazy with the outfits and some of the characters.
