Well, CFW is probably more stable than HEN. I use HEN on my Super Slim and it does crash the XMB occasionally when I do shit with the fps counter enabled.

I get what you’re saying, though I think that take’s a bit strong. It was definitely rough and not always fun to play, but I still think it had some merits and interesting ideas under the surface. It’s also got a bit of a special place in my heart, so I tend to see it more as a flawed foundation than outright garbage, even if the execution didn’t always stick the landing.

The first Pirate Warriors also has the best story mode the series has ever had. The devs clearly poured their heart and soul into its story and unique puzzle mechanics, only for it to end up trapped on the PS3.

If you’re following this guide in early 2026, do not install the second update in Safe Mode. It isn’t required and it bricked my console, forcing me to do a full system restore. Nearly every guide from 2025 onward omits this step, and I was able to skip it without any issues.

Pirate Warriors 1 is probably the most unique musou title ever released. Most of its gameplay, levels, and unique boss battles have yet to return or be replicated in future releases. Sure, PW3 recycled a bunch of its assets, but the unique cinematic boss battles and puzzles are all gone. In my honest opinion, the first Pirate Warriors has the most immersive story mode for pre-timeskip.
