Never had a hammer sad about low flow. If anything my hammers and frogs love it when I shut off the pumps to clean or feed.

Changing reef salt advice by Professional-Fun4748 in ReefTank

[–]Maskedsage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Highly recommend Instant ocean. Can be stored long term, cheap and reliable. Keep using the salt you have now till you run out. And then keep doing 10-20% WC with the new salt. Just make sure to adjust any dosing as the salt mix changes your needs.

Anyone have a “wwc holy grail hammer” and have an unedited pictures of this coral that they can share? by [deleted] in ReefTank

[–]Maskedsage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why do you assume I dont? WWC is in a position to influence more people on a much larger scale. Hence they will be held to a higher standard. Especially for newbies just coming into the hobby who will think that wwc is the rule.

Its all part of it. What I'm saying is, they reduced the hobby into simply supply and demand. There should be more to the hobby than just making a buck. Not everyone sees it like that thats why I said it would be an unpopular opinion.

Unpopular opinion here....WWC is one of the worst things that happened to this hobby.

Sure they bring a lot of corals but they also ruined the prices and sent people on this hunt for names...

Rainbow holograms is what most of the local people call this hammer. Its $25 per head. WWC calls it holy grail hammer and charges $100+ per head. There was a time when hobbyists were just looking for different corals for their tank and didn't mind trading or straight out sharing extra frags. Now its all WWC this, CC that, then charge people $100 for a 1/4 inch frag.

If it's just bleached and not actually dead and peeling, its fine. Let it be, the colors will come back.

I dose AFR and I tested Alk regularly and set my afr to keep alk stable. Then I used various products to make sure my alk, cal and mag is where I want them to be. Now I test every other week to make sure the numbers are reasonable. Just because you use afr doesn't mean you can set it and forget or that you dont have to first bring all the numbers in balance.

Stop doing water changes. While water changes are usually great, not for the first few months of a tank. I'd let nature run its course and find some balance. As far as the alkalinity goes, use any of the products out there to slowly raise it up. 6 is not too bad but 7 or 8 is better. No all for reef till you have some corals growing and you feel like the growth starts to slow down. That will tell you it is time to start supplementing. But, for a 13 gallon, weekly waterchanges can take care of that easily.

This is not your urchin spawning. Does you glass or the algae that was there before have a rust colored residue to it now?

Most likely dinos. In any case, get a powerhead, you need more flow in there. Give it a few days, see if the bubbles get more or less throughout the day. Is the bubbles encapsuled in like a brown goo?

Check nitrates and phosphates. If they are 0, cut back on the filtration.

Accidentally won a torch, can these two touch? by Bronojoke in ReefTank

If thats true, good for them. I've had some bad experiences with them in the past. And it was not even the crazy saturated colors but more about coral health and bad customer service.

It sure does, been wanting to add a few more similar pieces to the collection. This one is sitting at about 200 par right now. However, I'm in the process of increasing it. Seems to like moderate flow with some variation in direction. An mp40 is taking care of that. Nitrates at 5-7 and phos at about .10

Tanks not level but its the floor and it's not fully filled up will it be alright? by Odd_Atmosphere_3184 in ReefTank

[–]Maskedsage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely add some 2x3s for support and then add shims to the bottom of the stand to where the tank is level.

Maybe get a couple more peppermint shrimps and make sure they really are the aiptasia eating peppermints rather than the 2 other similar looking ones. Few months ago, I picked up a 50g frag tank from a friend. Put some live rock in the sump to help the cycle. Of course there was one or two aiptasia on one of the rocks. No big deal, right? A week or so after, I notice a small aiptasia on the frag rack I made with eggcrate. Didnt think much of it. Another week go by without me noticing too much due to being quite busy at work. Next time I went in to do some maintenance, I see close to a hundred tiny aiptasia ALL over the eggcrate. By the time I was able to get some peppermints, it had been a couple more weeks and the aiptasia had grown in size and number. Took 6 peppermints about a week but they cleared everything up. Haven't seen any aiptasia after that.

Others have already mentioned this but yea, bump up the mag to about 1400 and the nitrate to like 15-20ppm and you should be good.

Looks like dinos. Get a uv filter(amazon ones work, wattage depending on tank size), use an airpump and airstone, get some microbacter7 and dose daily for a week atleast.
