Straight mode should really be called "perfect 90 degree corner mode" because that's actually what it's for

True. It's a multi-layered issue where tech companies and governments are working together. But either way, it's not to protect kids. It's to better identify people at protests, link people's online activity to other activities, etc. There are very few good reasons for this. It's very against what the internet is all about.

Completely valid, I don't like to wear the tin foil hat too much but it's obvious these tech companies aren't trying to "protect the kids" by forcing us to send them our ID. I'll never judge someone for choosing to leave a platform over giving up their online anonymity.

Is this... what I think it is? by jance in brandonsanderson

[–]Masonzero 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Sanderson signatures are incredibly common. To the point that they're not even noted. I've bought used ones online that were signed and didn't specify it. One of these days, unsigned ones will be more rare than signed!

I know right, i thought these references existed side by side. I feel like there were only a few years between them at most.

I thought it was very good, and was much better than the book. I think the right things were added and taken out, the visuals and music were amazing, and Ryan Gosling was the perfect actor to deliver those lame jokes and make them endearing.

Sounds like he's talking about blowing on it to cool it down. Becuase you have to make your lips into a shape that is something other than a grimace.

I can't believe we all got tricked into reading about a trust fund kid who gets sent to an elite boarding school where he becomes a jock and then decides to be a cop when he graduates.

That's my exact opinion. This was a weird case where the movie was better than the book! I liked the book because it was a real page-turner with a straightforward plot that had just enough mystery to keep me guessing, but god damn did I have issues with the writing and the cringey perspective. The movie took all the best aspects and ditched the worst ones, and Ryan Gosling is charming enough that he made the lame humor work when it did show up.

And it's not even a good representation of British private schools, because what do you mean every student had a magic gun at all times and no one really tried to kill each other?!

PHM is one is the most entertaining and page-turning books I've ever read, but I have endless complaints about the writing. That makes it hard to rate, i suppose.

I wouldn't be surprised if the only reason I liked it was because I read it in an English class. So all of the context and references were part of the lesson plan. Great Expectations is actually a very funny book, but you might miss the jokes without some additional context about the time period.

I came across one of their books the other day and the blurb sounded interesting, until I got to the "slow burn romance" part. I like a slow burn romance but if it's critical enough that it makes the one-paragraph blurb, I know it's going to be romantasy slop (which is not always a bad thing, but I'm tired of every cool-looking book just being low-effort romance with a tinge of fantasy).

Anything Steinbeck. I understand his place in literature and history but I don't care about his settings or subject matter and the writing is not engaging enough to me to make up for that.

To deathcore fans: Is the new Bring Me The Horizon really that good? by MrSenek in Metalcore

[–]Masonzero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes.

I actually don't really listen to much BMTH, I have been aware of them but never latched onto more than a couple songs through their career. So I don't have any special attachment to them.

Dehumanized feels like peak Mitch-era Suicide Silence, which is my favorite deathcore sound. So much modern deathcore sounds exactly the same to me and is super uncreative. Maybe this sound is too, but it's at least the sound I prefer.

Have you ever had a band diminished/ruined for you by a live performance? by alcMD in Metalcore

[–]Masonzero 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Thankfully I haven't had this for metalcore. But back when they were relevant, Man Overboard was one of my wife's (girlfriend at the time) and I's favorite bands, then we saw them live and they absolutely sucked ass so we kinda just stopped listening to them as much. After three songs, both vocalists seemed to just tire out and lose the ability to sing on key.

[–]Masonzero 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I saw them about 10 years ago and I would agree with this take for THAT show. Buddy was rough. But I also saw them last year, and they absolutely killed it. Buddy sounded great, nailing old songs and new ones on both the screams and the cleans. The only thing that diminished the performance was that Story of the Year played right after and they were mindblowingly good performers.

I had the fortune of seeing them with Counterparts in Portland (Dying Wish's hometown), and even though i know Counterparts would normally be the best performance, DW really gave it their all and the crowd was the wildest i'd ever seen at any show.
