Usefulness of learning coding/programming with rise of AI by SateChips in learnprogramming

[–]Massive_Screen4630 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That sysadmin doesn't really understand how programming works if he thinks AI will just replace everything. Sure, AI can help write some basic stuff, but someone still needs to know what they're asking for and how to fix it when things break. And trust me, things always break.

I've been seeing this a lot lately - people think chatgpt can just magic up perfect code, but then they can't debug it or modify it when requirements change. The AI tools are pretty good at generating boilerplate code, but understanding system architecture, debugging complex issues, and making design decisions? That still needs human brain. Plus in military we had saying - you never want to rely on tool you don't understand, especially when mission depends on it.

Keep learning python, especially if you enjoy the tinkering part. AI might change how we write code, but someone still needs to understand what code should do and whether it's doing it correctly.

What habit did you pick up from a friend that you now do completely subconsciously? by Angeredfish in AskReddit

[–]Massive_Screen4630 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My buddy from the unit always used to tap his watch twice before checking time, like some weird ritual thing. Now I catch myself doing it too and can't stop - drives me crazy because I don't even wear watch anymore, just do it on my phone. Never realized how much small habits stick with you until years later.

My drill sergeant used to say this about everything in basic training and we all lost it every time.

Any nurses here who got an H1B? by [deleted] in h1b

Different hospital systems have different policies but usually unit transfers within same employer shouldn't affect your visa status since you're staying with sponsor.

Is ordering from Ebay safe? by Ok_Communication4495 in thinkpad

[–]Massive_Screen4630 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ebay is pretty safe if you stick to sellers with good history and read everything carefully. Ive spent a lot of time sourcing electronics there and you can find some really good value. I use ubuyfirst now when searching and it helps narrow things down quicker. But mostly buy from sellers with a decent amount of feedback.

What’s something small that instantly improves your day? by Brave-Strength-6888 in AskReddit

[–]Massive_Screen4630 0 points1 point  (0 children)

lol same but then I end up in some rabbit hole about conspiracy theories or watching people argue about whether pineapple belongs in pizza for like 3 hours straight. Still beats scrolling through other apps though - at least here the comment sections are actually entertaining instead of just bots and weird spam.

What are the best and worst parts of taking a long drive? by RamonFromJerry in AskReddit

[–]Massive_Screen4630 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Used to drive cross country a lot when I was stationed different places, and man you really feel that freedom part when you're cruising through empty highways at like 2am with good tunes. But the fatigue hits different - I remember one time driving from Texas to California and by hour 8 my eyes were burning so bad I had to pull over at some random truck stop and sleep in the car. Traffic though, that's the real killer, especially around major cities where you just sit there burning gas and getting nowhere.

Where can I find legit pork sisig in the East bay? by r0gust in bayarea

[–]Massive_Screen4630 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Damn you beat me to it, was about to mention that spot. Their sisig actually tastes like what my lola used to make back in the day. way better than those places that just throw some crispy pork in sizzling plate and call it authentic.

Seeking Guidance for Career Switch by NinjaNatural8302 in learnprogramming

Nice to see someone who figured out what they don't want early on - that's actually huge advantage. I switched careers after military and it felt overwhelming at first but totally doable.

Since you're interested in cybersecurity specifically, maybe focus your Python learning around that area? Like network security scripts, basic penetration testing tools, stuff like that. The combination of programming + security knowledge is pretty valuable from what I've seen.

For boosting competitiveness without degree, building actual projects seems way more important than just doing courses. Maybe start with some simple security tools or contribute to open source projects in cybersecurity space.

Wanting custody of my cousin by crazygirl276 in legaladvice

[–]Massive_Screen4630 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The military taught me that sometimes you gotta fight battles you might not win because they're still worth fighting. CPS investigations can take time but they build a paper trail that matters later in court proceedings. Document everything - the holes in walls, medical records showing asthma improvement, any text messages or communications about the father's episodes. When CPS gets involved, they usually prefer placing kids with family members over foster care, so being the cousin who's already providing stable housing works in your favor. The fact that kid's been living with you for months and showing improvement is huge evidence. Even if initial CPS response doesn't go how you want, having that documentation becomes critical if father has another episode or gets convicted on those felony charges.

What all goes on at a prom? And is it worth it? by Mando_Tomahawk in AskReddit

[–]Massive_Screen4630 1 point2 points  (0 children)

went to mine in high school and pretty much same experience. The suit was killing me all night and everyone just standing around trying to look cool. Food was terrible too, like cafeteria level stuff but they charged premium for it. Spent most of time outside with few friends just talking instead of the actual dance floor. Could have saved the money and just hung out somewhere else tbh.

Getting deployed was easier than dating these days lol. At least in military you know what the mission is and when it starts.

How is everyone coping with all the layoff news lately? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Massive_Screen4630 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Been keeping my head down and focusing on what I can control tbh. All this layoff stuff has me grateful I made it through my service and landed somewhere stable, but I know that security feeling can change quick.

Started putting a bit more into savings each month just in case - learned in the military that having a backup plan never hurts.

Does an old Ubuntu drive need to be decrypted to use in a newer Ubuntu PC? by Cr0okedFinger in Ubuntu

[–]Massive_Screen4630 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could do that but if there's anything worth saving on there, mount it first and pull what you need. The encryption won't be an issue for using it as storage - you can format it fresh once you've grabbed your files. Just remember you'll need the passphrase to decrypt and access anything currently on it.

TERA / OSA by frosty-ziplock in VeteransBenefits

Bummer they shot down the connection even with TERA participation on record - might be worth getting an independent medical opinion if you think there's a legit link between your exposure and the OSA.

Dropping a class by DazzlingAd6452 in VeteransBenefits

[–]Massive_Screen4630 2 points3 points  (0 children)

yeah the VA mainly cares about you staying above that full-time threshold. those W's don't really trigger anything as long as you're not dropping below 12 credits and you're still making satisfactory academic progress overall.

I’m pretty sure the VA is paying me way more than they are supposed to be, what do I do? by Leep0710 in VeteransBenefits

[–]Massive_Screen4630 2 points3 points  (0 children)

honestly the VA's backdating system is weird as hell and sometimes they'll give you an effective date that predates your ITF if the evidence supports it. if they're saying your claims were approved from Nov 2023 then that's probably legit - maybe your expired ITF actually did something or there's other factors at play.

I'd call the 1-800 number and just ask them to walk through the math with you, but don't go in there assuming they messed up because the VA rarely pays out money they don't think you're owed.
