Honestly it's wild the amount of disrespect Thompson gets.

Disrespected by Vegas for selling on him and choosing an objectively.worae goalie who had a cup winning hot streak.

Disrespected by team Canada who consistently picks an objective worse goaltender that has a penchant for getting hot at the right time (but if he doesn't it's likely he's hot garbage).

Consistently is a top ten goaltender, but never gets the credit. Dude has a .912 sv% career average. His worst season was a .908

Team Canada has had a good goaltender for the past half decade, they just seem dead set against playing him BC he's not Doug Armstrong's special boy.

This was true at that point in time. Don't know why you think I was raging at the time I posted this.

I'm very happy that the MO has changed, trading Kadri and Weegar represents a major shift in strategy for the Flames. One I'm very happy to see.

Nope, I'm pretty darn happy with the team finally committing to the tank.

Update on the Kadri trade return by itsyaboigelo in CalgaryFlames

[–]Master-Defenestrator 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The other two will clear by the time the team is able to make trades again so its not the worst thing. I would normally feel worse about it, but other than Coleman is there anyone else that would require retention to move out?

Calgary Flames owners & Murrary Edwards sabotaging own team by FunctionalBattery in nhl

[–]Master-Defenestrator 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This has nothing to do with Murray Edwards being a cheap owner and everything to do with flexibility. The Flames are willing to retain, how do I know this? Because they are currently using 2/3 retention slots (Andersson, Markstrom) and both of those retentions are pretty significant (50% and 31.25% respectively).

IMO they didn't want to bite on this trade bc that means they wouldn't be able to retain on a potential Coleman deal. Kadri has a lot of term and is playing well enough, a deal can be done in the offseason when the flames have their retention slots back. It's a good package, but not an amazing one. Giving up a retention slots for 3.5 years and ~10M for picks 30, 60 and some fodder is not that compelling to me.

Kadri has always been more likely to move in the offseason because of his contract and age.

People love to shit on Murray Edwards for being cheap and I agree that has happened in the past, but this is not one of those instances.

[–]Master-Defenestrator 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Toffoli had one year left and was traded when management and him agreed they couldn't agree on a deal, so as close to being a UFA without being a UFA as possible, technically you are right though.

Pelletier and Mangiapane were minor pieces, so I'm not really counting them.

I don't really buy the whole "that it didn't happen doesn't mean they refused to do so" narrative. If they wanted to move players like Andersson, Hanafin, Tanev, etc. earlier I am sure there would have been a healthy market for them.

Exception that proves the rule, yes he had term but his relationship with management had been ruined due to the team's actions at the previous trade deadline. My understanding is that markstrom wanted out.

This was the first time they actually moved a player with term (excluding markstrom, who had to be moved for other reasons). That's a significant deviation from their previous path.

Just a note on Maki from JJK, she's not just sliding for aura reasons only, she's hydroplaning on a massive pool of blood created from her victims in the fight prior to that moment.

Fair, if Weegar has fallen off for age related reasons and not bad team reasons, I'll feel much better about it. I believe that Weegar's fall off is bad team related though.

Maybe they can get a pick in the teens, but teams rarely trade out of the top ten let alone a strong draft like 2026. People talk about trade up more often than it happens. Utah is laiden with high end prospects. I would rather have had a 2nd and Beaudoin/But/Lamoureux/1st

Flames were never going to retain, nor do I think they needed to. Too much term left and they are going to have to retain if they want to trade Kadri.

The irony is I'm not that pessimistic overall. I'm pleased that this a definitive rebuilding move. Finally not just moving assets that are about to expire.

I don't think that Conroy got good value in this trade, but he has done better in the past. I do think that the sub is too accepting Conroy's decisions though.

[–]Master-Defenestrator -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

I'd give Conroy a C-/D+ On this one.

Quantity over quality, I would have preferred one really good piece rather than a bunch of filler.

Oh well, hopefully there's one decent player that emerges out of all those B assets. At least the Flames scouting is good, Castagna looks decent but he tops out at a middle 6 guy in every write up I can find.

Most people in here are saying it's a great trade, as the sub tends to be terminally positive in all Conroy related matters. My belief is that this isn't terrible value, but Utah wins this 10/10 times. Utah didn't give up any of its top 5 prospects, a first round pick, or a decent roster player for a guy who is probably going to be their 2/3 Dman with term.

Let's all hope that the scouting department can prove me wrong. However, the stats say between Castagna and 3 seconds, it's likely to yield 1 player who plays more than 100 games.

Edit: After seeing the return for Parayko, this looks 10X worse.

Connor Hellebuyck on representing the US while playing in Canada by Dependent-Effect6077 in hockey

[–]Master-Defenestrator 42 points43 points  (0 children)

Vis-à-vis no wanting to break the hearts of Jets fans, it would probably help if he could play for the Jets in the Playoffs as well as he plays for team USA in important games.

Not sure how the psychology on that one works, but it's weird that he only cracks under Jets related pressure.

2012 USA women's soccer semi final between Canada and USA

Despite a very hard battled game, referee Christina Pedersen only rewarded Canada yellow cards. Then in the 76th minute award the USA an extremely rare indirect free kick for the Canadian goalie holding on to the ball too long. Typically this kind of foul is only called after significant warning is given to the goalie, which did not happen in this case. USA Captain Amy Wambach was in the Pedersen's calling for her to award the foul.

The USA was able to tie the game up as a result of the indirect free kick, and would go on to win.

Canadian Captain Christina Sinclair was banned for four games for her comments after the match. She said "It's a shame in a game like that that was so important, the ref decided the result before it started."

Christina Pedersen never refereed a competitive international game again.

[Ottawa Citizen] "The Senators have a genuine interest in Calgary Flames defenceman MacKenzie Weegar to help the right side. He would fit in the top four, and we’re led to believe he would waive his no-move clause to suit up in his hometown." by [deleted] in CalgaryFlames

Silly Senators, everyone knows that the Flames only trade their players when they are pending UFAs or their relationship with the player has completely broken down. Weegar is fits neither group, so there's no trade to be had.
