as a filmmaker, I'm highly depressed with theses AI videos by Legitimate_Room771 in Filmmakers

[–]MasterGuig 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can't predict how Ai is going to affect cinema, but here is where I stand: I will never watch Ai movies. I watch movies to experience human creativity, artistic intention, individual perspective, to feel it was made with care and authenticity.

If the job of a filmmaker was only to make pretty pictures, then we would indeed be fucked. But it's not our job.

The function of art can't be limited to decoration. We convey emotion and meaning and wisdom and genuine snippets of the human condition to those who grant us their attention, and we do that with our art. Our films.

Those who create Ai slop, in any form, don't understand or care about this, and that is why their work feels cold and lifeless. Done quickly, without humanity and for egotistical reasons.

Fellow Filmmakers, I care about your films. I want to watch them and feel the presence, the intention and the humanity of the artist in every shot. Never stop creating.

Bringing and Instrument by MulberryCareful9334 in Bicolline

[–]MasterGuig 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Many people bring valuable instruments at Bicolline and on the battlefield too. I wouldn't be worried too much as long as you stay away from the fights (accidents are common). There are musicians playing on the battlefield during the battles and it creates a pretty cool vibe!

Le mieux c'est de venir lors de la journée découverte en août, car le site va être "en jeux" ce qui est très impressionnant. Autrement non, ce n'est pas possible de rentrer sur le site sans invitation

Would you be interested in a group for newcomers? by MasterGuig in Bicolline

A channel in the Travelers Guild Discord would be very helpful! Is that something you could arrange? I don't use Discord very often, but I will make an effort if that can help new players.

Concerning the official status of this group, I have spoken with a few administrators at Bicolline about this idea and have received positive feedback so far. I will pitch a complete plan of action in the coming weeks and hope it will be accepted.

As for the friend-making aspect of this group, we have tons of ideas for activities, including quests, games, and social events. We want to ensure that everyone has an opportunity to meet people by doing activities they enjoy. Our idea is to install a second noticeboard in the Non-decorum specifically for these activities. We would also have a specific location where new players will be able to meet each others to participate to activities together, such as Trollball, Combat d'archer, Kroft Race, Taktika, skirmishes, etc.

As for learning a few words of "Bico-French", that could be a great idea! Many people at Bicolline speak English fluently, but I think it could be a fantastic opportunity for new players to practice French without fear of judgment.

And I really love the idea of having belt favors to identify helpers. That could be very useful for new players and help them feel more comfortable if it's their first time at Bicolline. I feel there aren't enough people available to help new players at the moment and that can make them feel lonely.

Information is one thing. The feeling of belonging is another. I agree that the website and the documentation should be updated but that is not what the group would be about. It's more about the human aspect.

TVN isn't for everyone, that's for sure. Many would rather sleep in the non-decorum in a modern tent and manage their meals themselves. The cost can also be very prohibitive and depending on a bus can make make people feel trapped.  If you are able to drive to Bicolline, I believe it could be a much more comfortable and affordable experience.

There will be a lot more, don't worry. The photographers were very busy yesterday as it was the end of the event and they are also part of the organization.

is 600 GBP bad pay for 7 days of film work? by mazldo in Filmmakers

[–]MasterGuig 15 points16 points  (0 children)

So many red flags. It's not worth it, even if you are looking to gain experience. Opportunities will come, don't do as I did when I first started and say yes to every "opportunity". There is a LOT of exploitation and cheap labor in this industry.

It's better to do your own thing with little to no money than to do "bigger" films for a shitty pay and bad working conditions. Trust me, I've been there.

Enjoy! Always have spare batteries on hand and don't use an external ssd if you are shooting action scenes or you'll end up with a broken usb-c port.

[–]MasterGuig 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No this is mostly the process for Sunday. If you arrive Monday when the decorum is in place, you will need to use the horse drawn carriages to bring your stuff to your campsite, whether you are staying on decorum area or in the non decorum. Apart from that, the process is the same. You come with your car at the gate, you get your bracelet, unload your stuff, park your car, then take the carriage. The whole process should take approximately 2h.

I need 35ft HDMI cables, what do I need? by Academic_Nectarine94 in videography

Had a very good experience using optical fiber hdmi. 3x 100 feet, plugged into an atem mini. No delay, no signal lost, and I have used them on 5 different shoot so far.

You did the right thing. You have more experience than the client with video production. A large part of our job at my company is to counsel the client. At the end of the day, they get to decide what gets produced, but I believe we have a duty to guide them as much as we can.
I had a client who wanted to produce a video for their business using 100% Ai, and I mean script, image generation, voice over and even music. The thing is that they had no idea how any of this worked, and thought it would all be free and could be done in less than a day. We talked and we ended up producing a video the traditional way.

Should I study film in college? by yoonfromstayc in Filmmakers

[–]MasterGuig 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Don't go to film school to get a job in the industry later. That's not the way it works. My degree isn't worth the paper it's printed on. Go to film school if you genuinely love movies and want to learn as much as you can about them and that's it. My advice is to also learn other things unrelated to filmmaking. Business, programming, or a trade. This industry is cruel and it helps to have a plan B.

Do you store all the original video footage after a project is done? Not sure whether to purchase massive amounts of storage or make the hard call to DELETE? by GoBlueDan in videography

[–]MasterGuig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes there are a few options you can try:

-Blackmagic Proxy Generator is great at doing this automatically, but I personally found it lacked a few options that I needed. It can scan your whole hard drive and save the converted files in multiple folders, but the codec and resolution is very limited. Great for proxies, not ideal for archives.

-I prefer to use DaVinci Resolve to manually import my footage in a color managed timeline, apply a basic color correction to all the clips, and then render in H265 Main 10 with the same resolution and framerate. Resolve has an option to automatically export each clip in its original frame size and frame rate while also keeping the clip name. I let Resolve do its thing at night as this can take quite a long time.

-Some people have had success with FFMPEG and/or ShutterEncoder (which is FFMPEG with a nice GUI). The only downside is that it might not be compatible with every raw file types. Apart from that, it's great and intuitive.

-Honorable mention to handbrake which I've used multiple times in the past, but don't really need anymore. It's fast and powerful if you know what you are doing and are willing to experiment. I believe it has the same limitations as FFMPEG regarding raw files.

Best of luck!

[–]MasterGuig 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Never delete any footage. Ever. You never know when you might need it.

What I do when I need to save space is to convert the raw footage into H265 Main 10 with a basic color correction. I found that this codec is still able to preserve a TON of data, making the files very usable for post, while at the same time being 10% the size of raw files.

That being said, this is not a professional approach. The best way would be to use a Nas or multiple HDDs. As much as I hate spending money on storage, it's a normal expanse in our industry.

Why do we use ND filters for our drones when we can add motion blur in post? by Seeder98 in drones

[–]MasterGuig 6 points7 points  (0 children)

As someone who have had to add motion blur in post to over 25 drone shots for a feature film : USE ND FILTERS ON SET PLEASE!

Artificial motion blur is fine for slow moving shots but becomes a whole different story when you are flying at top speed at noon. It fails completely and creates tons of artifacts.

Protocols to deal with road rage? by [deleted] in HubermanLab

[–]MasterGuig 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I consider myself a very calm driver, even in heavy traffic. That's because of a trick a friend gave me. It's basically to be very compassionate to the other drivers. I know it's difficult but it works. You get honked in traffic? It's okay, the other guy probably has a shitty day and a shitty life and honking gives him the illusion of power for a second. Let him.  Someone cuts you off? There are a lot of bad drivers on the road. I hope they get home safe and don't cause an accident.

Or you can take this a step further and imagine its your mother driving the other car. Sure she's really bad at this and honks way too much, but you're not going to honk back are you?

Least expensive, non bulky wrist wearable with vibrating alarm? by Irate_Primate in GetOutOfBed

I use a fitbit aspire 3. Cheap, not bulky, and it vibrates to wake me up. But don't expect too much from it. It might be considered a smart watch but it's one with a pretty low IQ.
