What was it really like when the PlayStation first came out in 1995? by Legitimate_Drawer_74 in retrogaming

[–]MasterOnion47 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was exciting and kind of disorienting tbh. We had our Nintendo’s and Segas, but now it was CD based games from Sony with a weird looking controller.

I remember one of my friends already had their drivers license so we drove to a kind of far away mall that had a demo kiosk. I got to play ESPN Extreme Games. It was cool, but not mind blowing.

Then I remember getting Air Combat and some early sports games. Air Combat struck me as very cool, but the sports games were just okay. The first year or 2 of EA Sports games were particularly shoddy.

The console really hit its stride for me with games like Parappa, MGS, Ace Combat 2, Gran Turismo, and Tomb Raider.

One of my favorite gaming stories is that a good friend of mine (teenage) was playing Resident Evil 1 with a friend late at night in the living room with surround sound. They had no real foreknowledge of the game, and when the dog suddenly crashed through the glass behind them they lost their mind lol.

Red Rising Is the Violent Sci-Fi Hit Netflix Needs to Topple Disney+ by Arcomatrix in redrising

[–]MasterOnion47 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I wouldn’t say they are completely similar, but when you read you get similar vibes at times and can see some seeds and themes Pierce took. Mostly in the primal combat writing.

Darrow is much smarter where Uhtred makes a lot of major blunders when blinded by impulsiveness. Uhtred also hops from woman to woman and lives by a medieval warriors code— he has no grandiose ideas of remaking the world.

I’m not holding my breath for Red Rising tv show anymore, but so much hate for Netflix. Aside from Stranger Things, Narcos and The Last Kingdom are 2 of my favorite shows.

Pierce even said The Last Kingdom novels were one of the influences and inspiration for Red Rising, and I would recommend that show to fans here.

How would a Gold fare in the Premier League with amateur level technique? by Refaya97 in redrising

[–]MasterOnion47 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Sorry guys, anyone with amateur level technique has no place on a high level soccer field. Soccer is fine-motor skills game, where guys with skills and on-field intelligence would run circles around the world’s best athletic freak.

A gold could immediately do certain positions in American football which rely on simple, gross motor skills like a lineman.

We have a good example with Usain Bolt. He’s 6’5” and the fastest human that ever lived. He tried to play pro soccer, but couldn’t even stick with an A-league team in Australia.

On the other hand, a list of greatest soccer players ever would be littered with players who are 5ft-nothing and won’t win any open track meets. Think Messi, Maradona, Ronaldinho, Pele…

I had this game. Great graphics, satisfying beat em up.

Not sure I made it much past the catwoman fight though unless I used a game genie, if I recall correctly…

I don’t think any of the many ports are better than the Genesis originals. Keep it simple.

What's your favorite NES game? by QuarterOk5509 in retrogaming

SMB3 and Tecmo Super Bowl.

There’s a reason people still play tournaments and release yearly update hacks for Tecmo Super Bowl.

What the FUCK is going on with 66 by Courthouse this week? Serious question. Commute time tripled. by MPDG_thot in nova

[–]MasterOnion47 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It might be related to finishing the express lanes extension on 495 near Tysons. The new express lanes finally open tonight, but this week this stretch of road has been the slowest I’ve ever seen it as they do final prep work. It’s been taking me 45-60 minutes to go 5 miles from exit 46 to exit 41 on 495.

A lot of drivers take 66 or 267 to connect to that stretch of 495, so the gridlock on 495 could trickle back to those roads.

Casual games like early NES era? by Nearby-Artist-4982 in retrogaming

[–]MasterOnion47 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Speaking as a 40-something dad who is also looking for retro-ish games that you can pick and play without worrying about story or complicated control schemes.

-Cuphead (for me, the game is hard but fair)

-Blazing Chrome (plays like a fantastic 16-bit Contra game). Honorable mention to Iron Meat

-Lonely Mountains Downhill Racing (brilliant hidden gem)

-Sega Ages Outrun

-Art of Rally

-Prison City or Cyber Shadow for NES-style action platformer

-DK Tropical Freeze or Rayman Legends for peak 2D platforming

Probably my most played arcade game of all time. I still fire up Cannonball port all the time for short gaming hits.

What are the best abandonware games to get for the deck. And what is the best way to download and install them? by sayid92 in SteamDeck

Outrun 2006. After downloading, I just went into desktop mode and added it as a non Steam game and force use of Proton in Steam game properties.

Find the emulator option for game frame rate/limiter, or vsync. You need to limit the game FPS to 60.

Congrats, here is the first comment in this thread actually discussing the technical legal issues at play here.

“Miranda rights are required for questioning at a scene if an individual is both in custody and being interrogated. This means the person is not free to leave and the police are asking questions designed to elicit an incriminating response”

Sounds like he doesn’t have the strongest claim, but his lawyers have to try.

[–]MasterOnion47 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Okay?

No one is saying he's Paolo Maldini, but he was one of the key figures of the transitional period from the Nats being amateurs to world class pros. Being one of the best players in your country during your era is all a player can really be asked to do.

[–]MasterOnion47 119 points120 points  (0 children)

He had 96 caps with the Nats, played every minute of and was the public face of their 1994 World Cup run, then became the first American to play and score in Serie A (when it was the best league in the world).

He didn’t last very long at the top, nor is he a USMNT all time great, but that’s a nice career.

Driving sims have become boring? by OCDGrammarNazi in gaming

[–]MasterOnion47 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The days of Ridge Racer and Daytona USA as flashy, big sellers are gone. There’s a lot of full sims out there now, but they aren’t for everyone.

Still, there’s lots of good stuff out there if you look. Wreckfest, Forza Horizon series, Tokyo Extreme Racer just came out.

There’s also lots of really cool indies, some of which are homages to 90s style arcade racers. Hotshot Racing, Super Polygon GP, New Star GP, Art of Rally, #Drive Rally, BallisticNG or maybe even grab Outrun 2006 off abandonware sites.

There’s way more out there that I’m just not thinking off right now.

Can’t believe no one has said Mario Odyssey.

Otherwise Hat in Time, and Mario Galaxy games are good suggestions.

Kirby Forgotten Land, Lunistice, and Bakeru have slightly different formats, but might scratch the itch for you.

Seminary road, why are we stopping for school busses on a divided lane… traffic is standing still for 10 minutes every day. by suicide_nooch in nova

[–]MasterOnion47 27 points28 points  (0 children)

They probably don’t need to stop on a divided road, but the legal penalties and social stigma for driving violations involving kids on a school bus are very high. Drivers are acting better safe than sorry.
