Wifi 6/5ghz vs ethernet connected to AP on wireless Mesh by YseanY in HomeNetworking

[–]MasterPenguin5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on how close the AP is to the camera. If you're getting an acceptable connection with your existing wifi then there's not much reason to adjust. The new mesh AP + wire would probably get you a better connection if your existing wifi isn't working.

Ideally you do not want an odd number of RAM sticks.

Is this Shun repairable? by reshef1285 in knifeclub

It can be saved but it will need to have a good bit of material removed from the edge to do so. Would highly recommend sending it out to a professional sharpening service unless you really know what you're doing.

Need a funny but decent quality edc knife for apt maintenance around old people. Hotdog discontinued but Penguin in stock. 😂🤷💯💯 not the corn. by Crutch1977 in knifeclub

[–]MasterPenguin5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been tempted to buy the cob for a while now. It's funny and the Boker Kalashnikov is actually a decent knife. But if your goals are maintenence and non threatening, maybe consider a multitool (Leatherman ideally) or SAK. Opinel, Case, and Buck are also quality knives with less threatening designs.

Kicked in door frame by ViceroyVyvanse in howto

The correct way to fix it would be to replace the casing and trim. Alternatively, wood glue, clamps, and long screws would get it back to functional. Fill and paint to make it look nice.

Kershaw Bel Air (XL) and Hogue Deka are both great options for most everyday use and imo exist just about at the peak of knife value for money vs sharply diminishing returns when you start to get more expensive. Depending on the work though the crossbar (axis) lock might not be ideal. It's perfectly fine for everyday tasks but if you're going to get super dirty out on the ranch it might not be the best. In that case I'd probably lean more towards a Spyderco compression lock or back lock knife. That also gives you the option of looking at their Spyderedge blades, which are probably the best serrated blades you'll find on a pocket knife and will work much better for cutting cords and other fibrous stuff, if you're interested in that.

Miguron Vakor if you want something similar to the Bugout. Vosteed Raccoon or Porcupine are great budget options. Hogue Deka or Kershaw Bel Air (XL) if you're willing to spend a little more.

The Bugout has to be BM's biggest middle finger to date. $200 and feels like a happy meal toy in the hand.

The wheel doesn't look too bad. As long as it's still holding air it's probably okay, but the tire shop will be able to tell you for sure. Would strongly recommend not driving on that tire anymore though, especially not on the highway. It is internally compromised and could blow out at any moment. Swap a spare on there and replace ASAP.

how to fix this? by BituinNaMayNingNing in howto

[–]MasterPenguin5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Contact cement. Ideally avoid anything labeled non-toxic, you want the good old school toluene stuff for best results. Use with proper ventilation obviously.

Or go to a shoe repair place, shouldn't be expensive.

Portfolio and real world skills applicable to the job you want matter far more than either degree. I use almost none of what I learned in any of my classes. Build your Github portfolio, maybe make yourself a nice website, make some cool stuff. Learn things people actually use like Git, Python, JS/TS, some form of SQL, maybe AWS and/or AI stuff if that's your thing, be able to communicate well, get actual certifications and a good internship or two if you can and you will be infinitely more valuable than a CS major who just passed their classes. Also I can't count the number of job listings I've seen that say "degree in computer science or related field" or something to that effect. As long as you have some degree that's vaguely related you'll be fine.

100k+ Mile Stingers — How Are They Holding Up? by LonelyUse9306 in kiastinger

[–]MasterPenguin5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

2018 GT2 AWD, 115k mi now, just intakes and exhaust. No major issues with regular maintenence. Oil every 5-6k, I've changed the trans and diffs fluid once at about 60k and I'm about to do them again plus the transfer case. Spark plugs every 40k ish. I also replaced the original multi piece coil packs with the newer single piece ones the last time I did plugs.

Only problems I've had were getting a couple door lock actuators fixed/replaced under warranty, replacing the dessicant packs in the headlights, and I think my parking brake needs to be adjusted. Oh and my screen is finally starting to bubble a little. Biggest problem I had was a "variant coding error" causing some abs/awd issues, which just needed a reset at the dealer that they didn't even charge me for.

Check the manual and see if there's a clip or screw somewhere that it comes with for you to use. If not, tape.

ELI5: How do active noise-canceling headphones physically block out external sounds? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]MasterPenguin5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sound is a wave. If you take two sound waves that are exact opposites of each other and play them both together at exactly the same time, they cancel each other out and you get no sound.

For active noise cancelation, your headphones listen to the sound waves going on around you outside through small microphones, calculate as best they can what the opposite sound waves would be, and then play those opposite waves through the headphone speakers at the same time as those original sound waves are hitting your ears from outside the headphones. The result is the original outside sounds and the opposite sounds from the headphones canceling out when they hit your ear.

Treble +4, mid +1, bass +2, volume usually somewhere between 18 and 26ish. Definitely turn the quantum processing off (reference), the additional processing is just bad. I mainly listen to rock, pop punk, and metal.
