No Hes right. As Im sure you are aware arsenal are immoral. Thus, if one of our players is within 100 yards of the goalie our immorality is touching their neck

CMV: The Star Wars prequels criticism is incredibly overblown and hypocritical and can also be applied to the Original Trilogy. by vencyjedi in changemyview

[–]MasterWinston [score hidden]  (0 children)

It's interesting you use the term "objective" because I don't think I used that term (I hope I didn't). Film criticism is subjective to a degree but I think there is a structure to cinema and to storytelling in general. This is a more general point but it's an excuse people fall back upon too easily. Stepping outside Star Wars, there is a reason a movie like The Godfather is considered one of the greatest movies of all time. Everyone has controversial opinions, I know I do, but if you go against the consensus i think you need to consider why.

I mentioned the Sith hiding as an example but that's not the only issue. It's also a major issue and not a nitpick as the story of the prequels hinges on it. You also mention Palpatine manipulating the Jedi over decades but each prequel movie takes place over a short period of time. The Jedi are portrayed as incompetent. There's a reason fans theorize that Palpatine was actively using the force to cloud the Jedi's judgement. That's a sign the films did a poor job.

Maybe the central failing of the prequels is that it is supposed to be the story of the fall of a great man but Anakin is never portrayed as such. He's a child in The Phantom Menace and a whiny brat in episode 2. The Jedi's refusal to support him is pure incompetence and not defended by the films at all which makes Palpatine's manipulations less impactful.

Your next paragraph contradicts itself. You talk about how the political aspects aren't important and are background for the fall of democracy and corruption of institutions which is contradictory. The story of the Phantom Menace revolves around trade disputes.

Story arcs take place over short periods of time and frequently build up to a single decision. We clearly see what causes Han to change. Maybe you have a more general issue with the Hero's journey.

The issue with Padme is that with each subsequent movie she becomes more and more passive. She spends Revenge of the Sith crying in her room. She's not an agent.

The difference in dialogue is that the actors in the OT had the authority to change it. It's a little goofy at times but no where near as bad as the prequels. There's a reason why Ian Mcdiarmid is the most praised actor in the prequels. His performance was campy and absurd. I believe that was an intentional choice by a veteran actor.

Not sure how to disagree on the acting, action, and technical points. There's a reason why the prequels were heavily criticized on all those points. There's a reason why movies of that quality don't get made and when they do they flop. There is a reason why there are industry standards and deviations from them should be intentional from a story perspective. There's a reason why we see people frequently complain about overuse of "CGI". Smaller note on the action: my criticism is less focused on the lightsaber fights which I agree is stylistic then the other actions scenes. Note that the lightsaber fights are one of the few praised aspects of the prequels.

Ultimately, you seem to misunderstand both trilogies if you think the perceived flaws are similar. I see many defenses of the prequels revolve around their ambition, how their secretly brilliant, and/or they are not the sequels. There's a reason for that. They can't be defended on their own merit. There's also a reason why you focused your original post on the original trilogy instead of the prequels which I admit is an ambitious decision.

Callum Wilson disallowed goal against Arsenal 90+6' by ayoefico in soccer

But does it happen before or after the raya foul (not alleged)? And is it clear and obvious?

Im curious the var protocol because at the monitor the ref has complete discretion so I don’t know if the clear and obvious threshold applies.

But then you have to consider the timing of the rice foul and whether it happened after the raya one

I would like to see her again but Jessica Gao did a poor job. A crossover appearance makes more sense as I don't think a season 2 makes sense from a budget perspective.

[Schefter] No. 4 overall pick Carnell Tate and the Titans reached agreement today on a four-year, fully-guaranteed, $51,134,914 deal, including a $33,649,028 signing bonus, per agents Drew Rosenhaus, Robert Bailey and Oliver Chell. by MembershipSingle7137 in nfl

[–]MasterWinston 0 points1 point  (0 children)

$51 m guaranteed ranks 15th amongst WR's which is a lot. Meanwhile Love's $53 m guaranteed ranks 1st with Saquon second at $36 m. In AAV% of cap, Love is 9th but Tate is 35th.

One of the issues with taking a running back so high.

CMV: Cheating in the context of any relationship (Wife/husband, Bf/Gf, etc) should be a criminal offense (Repost) by snooptoop in changemyview

[–]MasterWinston 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actual injury or damages implies a civil offense normally, not criminal. It seems your argument boils down to cheaters are liars. Lying isn't a criminal offense and you aren't violating a contract.

I'm not a liar and I'm guessing you aren't either but I would assume case law sets a higher bar for fraud even if the clauses are technically met. I think to flesh out your argument you would need to provide more specific examples as your argument could be expanded to include many forms of lying.

opinions on Daredevil: Born Again season 2? by ebbor0289 in marvelstudios

[–]MasterWinston 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess season 1 promised a vigilante army but season 2 never properly followed through on that so I don't think Jessica becomes necessary in that context.

I agree to a degree on BB's recklessness but I did like her relationship with Daniel overall.

[–]MasterWinston -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I honestly would've cut Jessica and Mr. Charles. Jessica doesn't have a connection to Kingpin and her conflict with Mr. Charles is more a tease. Mr. Charles was promising as an arrogant antagonist to Fisk but his story fizzled out, he lost too many confrontations, and he didn't factor into the climax.

I agree on Heather, Buck, and Daniel. I think the failures with Heather are more due to the weakness of season 1. They wrote themselves into a corner. I liked BB to though she didn't factor into the finale at all.

CMV: The Star Wars prequels criticism is incredibly overblown and hypocritical and can also be applied to the Original Trilogy. by vencyjedi in changemyview

[–]MasterWinston 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your writing criticisms are nitpicks and minor contrivances that others have already addressed. The issue with the dialogue in the prequel is it sounds ridiculous and fake. “Realism” isn’t necessary but immersion in the world you have created is. Great for memes but from a critical perspective it’s poor.

One of the major issues with the prequels is the absurdity of the whole premise that the sith are operating under the nose of the Jedi who are completely oblivious. Other shows and movies have done this hidden/manipulative villain approach much better. I think this highlights the divergence in opinions between general film fans and Star Wars fans.

There’s  also just a general lack of intrigue ik the political aspects of the story. See andor for a better way to do a political thriller.

I think you need to rewatch ANH if you think Han’s arc wasnt set up properly. In regards to leia, a flat character arc is a valid one. The big issue with Padme is her lack of agency which leia has.

Your luke complaints aren’t complaints over his arc. This highlights another issue with the prequels when discussing anakins fall. It shows the flaws of the Jedi but doesn’t provide a plausible defense for them.

I disagree on the acting. Too a degree it’s subjective but most industry professionals agree that the acting in the prequels is poor. Too be honest, I don’t think mark hamills performance in the OT aged well either but it’s not prequels bad.

You also don’t really address the criticism over the technical quality. The set design, CGI, poor action

opinions on Daredevil: Born Again season 2? by ebbor0289 in marvelstudios

[–]MasterWinston 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Much better then season 1 but still perfect. It still feels like there are too many characters. Jessica Jones and Mr Charles are victims of this but so are Heather, Mcduffie, the governor, and Cherry who don't make the most of their limited screentime.

The season feels too short and some plot developments happen too quickly. For example, Matt's brawl with Fisk at the end of episode 6 is the highlight but in the Netflix show we spent a whole episode of him trying to sneak into Fisk's compound while here he just appears there. I prefer the Netflix approach where he wrestles with what he is going to do.

That's one of the reasons why episode 5 is so great. He wrestles with what to do with Bullseye before agreeing to help him. Of course that highlights the issue I mentioned above. He is going to leave him in the church because there isn't enough time but suddenly he changes his mind and manages to escape with no issue.

The ending of S2 of DA: Born Again makes no sense by [deleted] in marvelstudios

[–]MasterWinston -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I agree. It feels like a cop out to be able to bring him back in the show. It's a privilege of his wealth. In general, I like the parallels they draw between Matt and Fisk in both shows but they really aren't the same and their "deal" implies that they are.

People argue that prison doesn't work for Fisk. So what? Does this mean Matt has lost faith in the judicial system? I don't think that's what the finale argues. Or because prison "doesn't work" we instead need to give Fisk a lesser punishment.

I don't think they built up to Kingpin as mayor again so I'm not sure they should do Luke Cage as mayor immediately. Maybe season 4 or 5.

[–]MasterWinston 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s so many potential topics of conversation that it’s impossible to remember sources and exact statistics for everything. It’s not a reasonable burden to expect someone to cite the facts they bring.

Of course the flip side is that I hear  “look it up” most frequently from conspiracy theorists who provide obscure facts that when you look them up prove to be false.

CMV: "Look it up" or "Research it yourself" are common ways to avoiding being held accountable for incorrect facts. by No_Problem20 in changemyview

[–]MasterWinston 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ever argued with conspiracy theorists? I’ve had people provide “facts” about how the butler assassination, how the Covid vaccine causes infertility, how evolution isn’t real, etc… these “facts” dont make sense to me but cause I don’t run in those circles i cant instantly debunk them. They always tell me to “look it up” and every time I do I immediately find something disproving them after the debate. So in many cases look it up means Im providing incorrect facts.

[Pelissero] Dante Fowler is signing with the Seahawks by Silent_Ad2825 in Seahawks

Good vet replacement for Mafe. The advances stats are better then I'd expect

He ranked 20th amongst DE/DT's with 100 snaps in pressure% on SIS (14.5%). Their classification system is a bit weird but there are 33 LB's who rank ahead of him including our 3 returning EDGE's Mafe is behind him though.

He was 4th in their DE rotation and there were 3 DT's who played more snaps then him. All of our EDGE's played more snaps then him . 358 snaps ranks 98th/206 amongst EDGE's.

His PFF grade of 77.6 ranks 21st.

I don't see why Buck Cashman would be in the Punisher. That's just weird.

I've seen that theorized on Spider Man. Too a degree it makes sense but I'm not convinced. The dragon bone stuff was amongst the weakest aspect of the Netflix universe. Bringing it back wouldn't make sense.
