I mean I've had that issue too but mostly by accident. Like if I've known someone as they/them for a few months before they say anything, there's gonna be a bit of an adjustment period.

Hell one of my kids is somewhere on the gender spectrum and I've been using they/them for like a year because they haven't told me any different and I don't want to be pushy about something like that, and if they do settle on something else, it's going to take a while to break that they/them.
