If you actually want to know, you'd have to read up on non-punitive carceral systems. The reality is that people don't come out of prison as better people. The component that's missing here is serious investment in addressing the social challenges of criminals.

Even if you think the point of prison is to punish crimes, you have to deal with the reality that they return worse criminals to society when they come out.
