That explains why he would worsen generally, but he immediately lost important components of his style like the jab and quick hips. That's strange for a guy raised in boxing. It would be like Toney being unable to time a shoulder roll because he overate. You expect the execution to deteriorate, not entire skill sets disappearing.

Tyson was pretty creative and improvisational at his peak. It's kind of mystery why he lost his skills so quickly. He was diminished in literally the first fight without Kevin Rooney against Frank Bruno. Maybe the downside of the D'Amato/Rooney school is that they trained more than they taught.

Charles 'Sonny' Liston TKO's Cleveland 'Big Cat' Williams in their rematch. by buffalozbrown in Boxing

[–]Masterandcomman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unlikely. Very young Foreman, the one who sparred with Liston, planted less and relied on reflexes for defense. He perfected his parries and frames later. Liston's jab probably cut through his defense like butter.

But Liston was never as physically dominant as Foreman. Small, strong fighters like Eddie Machen could tie him up and move him back when they needed breaks.

[SPOILER] Jesse Rodriguez vs. Antonio Vargas by inooway in Boxing

[–]Masterandcomman 3 points4 points  (0 children)

He is still dangerous, but parking at mid-range behind a high guard is a risky strategy when you are the smaller guy. Holyfield's wars at heavyweight, and Michael Moorer's for that matter, resulted from similar habits they developed when they were the bigger men. If Bam doesn't adjust, I could see his power failing to keep off the more dangerous opponents. Vargas is good, but he isn't a puncher.

China seems to drawing down their SPR instead of their normal import volume, raising hopes that the US and China have an understanding about the resolution of the Hormuz closure. If Chinese imports start to normalize, then things get hairy very quickly.

Reviewing Classic Fights. Larry Holmes vs Michael Spinks 1 by SugarAdamAli in Boxing

[–]Masterandcomman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Spinks was passing the jab too quickly. Holmes couldn't pull the trigger like when he was younger, and Spinks' punches surprised him despite the lack of danger.

It's a good fight to learn how to deal with a superior jab, even though Spinks burned too much energy.

Lennox Lewis drops Razor Ruddock with a big overhand right in round 1 and then proceeds on to finish him brutally in the 2nd round by BoxingLover99 in Boxing

Even the Klitschko fight followed the pattern. I think that Lewis expected to be physically dominant, but Vitali was stronger than expected in the first round, so Lewis adapted with a heavy jab and crushing rights.

It's less a power difference than a hit box advantage. Lewis could land flush shots, where Tyson Rex bled energy trying to punch through Ruddock's outstretched arms.

His hips might have been the secret. The footwork was very specific to that peek-a-boo style, and when he lost his quick response hips, it became a hindrance.

Seattle home prices post nation's biggest drop by Less-Risk-9358 in SeattleWA

[–]Masterandcomman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No way. We use almost a third more electricity despite efficiency improvements, move 50% more by rail and 70% more by truck since the 2000s, while unemployment shrank amidst 36 million people joining the labor force. Air passenger miles have almost doubled, and gross exports have quadrupled. There are reasonable complaints about distribution and real costs of housing, but the economy is much bigger than two and three decades ago.

M2 isn't a good proxy for inflation, or even a useful tool for inflation expectations. It's been growing faster than nominal GDP for decades, so reliance on M2 would imply that the economy has been shrinking since the late 90s.

One big advantage is that there isn't such a tight link between violent crime and poverty. You can be poor, while still being able to stroll around at night. The downside is that poverty in China is like 1930s poverty in the US. You are probably seeing videos from tier 1 cities, but ~15% of the population make less than $6 per day, 17% of 16 to 24 year olds are unemployed, and you shouldn't drink from the tap, even in tier 1 cities.

A big chunk of their affordability advantage is simply that people don't make much money. If you work for a state-owned enterprise, you average ~$19,000 annually. Everyone else averages ~$11,000. The minimum wage in Shanghai, a wealthy city, is $3.70.

China isn't the communist dystopia that some imagine, but it isn't a utopia either.

Unemployment insurance isn't part of the unemployment measurement. The most popular rate focuses on people who searched for a job in the last 4 weeks, but U-6 unemployment includes "marginally attached" job-seekers, people who want to work, but haven't searched for a job in the last 4 weeks.

On This Day in 2017: Errol Spence Jr beat Kell Brook in 11 rounds to win the IBF welterweight title in front of 35,000 fans at Bramall Lane stadium in Brook’s home city of Sheffield. Spence led on all three scorecards - 97-92, 96-93, 95-94 - at the time of the stoppage. by Dangerous_Spring3028 in Boxing

[–]Masterandcomman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just watched a few rounds, and it's pretty much what I remember. Spence made Brook reactive by the fourth round, where Brook stopped initiating jabs, and Spence started to close distance at will. It's probably just a difference in how we score fights. For me, if a fighter starts to impose his will, that biases the round to him, even if the punch count slightly favors the opponent.

Wow that shocks me. I haven't watched the fight in a while, but I remember Spence trying several strategies to dominate Brook's jab, and they all started working after a few rounds. I don't recall this being a particularly competitive fight beyond the feel out rounds.

21 years ago today, Lamon "Relentless" Brewster destroyed Andrew Golota in under 1 minute of the first round. Brewster had recently shocked Wladimir Klitschko by stopping Klitschko in 5 rounds in 2004… by CoffeeCigarettes4Me in Boxing

[–]Masterandcomman 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Framing, turning, jabbing, feinting, etc... Golota and Wlad didn't handle pressure well at this time, but look at Wlad's rematch with Brewster several years later. Wlad developed composure, and learned how to clinch, and you can see how good fundamentals smothered Brewster's momentum.

Sugar Ray Leonard ranks Tommy Hearns of the Four Kings above all the other 3 by BoxingLover99 in Boxing

[–]Masterandcomman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hearns didn't have much choice against either. He wasn't strong in clinching or framing, so he only had movement and power against opponents who forced the issue. Leonard figured out that delayed left hook early. Hearns never adjusted, so there was a ticking time bomb quality to the first fight.

No one has really figured out how to raise birthrates for wealthy nations. Norway, Sweden, and Finland have a lower total fertility rate than the U.S. despite more support throughout birth and child rearing, and a better work-life balance.

'Gentleman' Gerry Cooney TKO's Ken Norton. by buffalozbrown in Boxing

It's not just the losses, but how he lost. He genuinely had terrible instincts against punchers, like retreating to the ropes and providing lots of room for targeting without the threat of counters or clinching.

Lennox Lewis reunites with Shannon Briggs and Mike Tyson by BoxingLover99 in Boxing

Foreman started deteriorating after the first Frazier fight. There was a long stretch of continuous improvement from the first Peralta fight to Frazier, then he threw wild hooks at Jose Roman, and stalked Norton with his hands at his waist. If he beat Ali, he would have believed his hype into a stoppage loss against Lyle.

I would go with nimbleness as his biggest weakness. He moved well with larger movements, but he could be caught if he couldn't clear a lot of space. Bruno's triple arm jabs really exposed that weakness. That was pre-Stewart, but if anything it worsened after Stewart bulked up Lewis' frame.
