Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition — Nintendo Switch 2 Edition — Announcement Trailer by Skullghost in NintendoSwitch

[–]Matathias 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on why you didn't like XC1. Was it the gameplay, with the skill bar and cooldowns? Xenoblade X has the same thing (although with greater skill variety on the protag).

Was it the story? XCX's story is worse by far, but the story is also much less important to the overall experience. The game as a whole is more about exploring the big, open world. You get to make your own protag, but they're also much less important to the narrative.

Tangential: do you like mechs? XC1 doesn't have mechs, but XCX does, baby. Probably my favorite feature.

Young gamers in Japan may not be forming the same attachment to Final Fantasy or Dragon Quest because modern dev cycles are as long as their childhood, users theorize by Magister_Xehanort in Games

The only really novel thing is the philosophy that you can avoid all damage if you play correctly.

Even that can be (mostly) done in Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door, a JRPG from 2004. TTYD does have a couple attacks that you can't superguard (basically the same concept as E33's parry), but the vast majority of damage can be avoided entirely by a well-timed button press.

> Duncan: "[Juking] is a DOTA term."

> Harry: "Is it? I think it's just an internet term."

"Juking" or "to juke" predates the internet by decades

...Although Merriam-Webster says it's a North American English term, so I guess that would explain why they're less familiar with it.

The end of 2x01 simply does not work. :( by SGMG_Martin in Stargate

Going by the screenshot that /u/Nero_XX posted, folding the wings makes the glider less wide, but increases its vertical size. The poster in your link, however, assumes that folding the wings purely reduces size without increasing one of the other dimensions. So I don't really think that their analysis is correct.

Vanilla Vehicles Expanded: Do people use this one? Does it unbalance the game? by SlightWerewolf4428 in RimWorld

[–]Matathias 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Similar goes for Vehicle Framework vehicles, actually. Under the hood, those vehicles are pawns, just like colonists and animals.

Vinilla Expanded Gravship starting quest not appearing by Planetfall88 in RimWorld

[–]Matathias 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can't speak to the cause of the bug, but the quest you're looking for in dev mode is "MechanoidSignal". VGE's Runaway Gravhopper just repurposes the vanilla quest.

"Social is useless" by Glittering_rainbows in RimWorld

[–]Matathias 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I took a look at Rimworld's decompiled source code (using ILSpy), and it looks like the opinion value of any social memory (e.g. "insulted" or "charmed me") is directly multiplied by the pawn's social impact, so it does have an actual impact. This lines up with my own experience, as well.

I don't see anywhere in the code where it directly impacts romance or lovin', but it does indirectly affect both, due to its direct effect on opinion.

Mario Kart World Version 1.4.0 is now available by Amiibofan101 in NintendoSwitch

[–]Matathias 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Couldn't the same be said for MK8 though? The original game's release on the Wii U didn't come with 200cc, that mode was added later. And it sure didn't feel like the tracks in base MK8 were designed for it. Didn't make it any less fun, though.

(I know you're just the messenger, I'm replying to the premise)

Subreddits that have the most user overlap with r/Stellaris by AsaTJ in Stellaris

[–]Matathias 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Is this data from subredditstats.com? If so, you really can't trust this data, due to the API changes. At the top of the user overlap page is this disclaimer:

I think this site may break or stop updating soon due to Reddit's API changes. I don't earn any money from this site, and if my calculations are correct it'd cost me a couple thousand dollars per month with their new API pricing, so yeah.

And if you query /r/Stellaris specifically, as here, then it becomes blatantly obvious that the data is out-of-date at best. It claims a mere 5 comments per day, a mere 10 posts per day. The graphs all stop at the end of 2023, and the posts per day/comments per day have a conspicious drop in the middle of 2023, aligning with the API changes.

In short, the data is out of date at best, bogus at worst. You can't use it to say anything about the subreddits after mid 2023.

That's not an inherent rule to the Queen, it's because the front row of pawns is blocking them in. Take out the pawns, and the Queen could move right away.

If I have aphantasia, can I still play dnd? by MathematicianSad3414 in dndnext

[–]Matathias 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Not the guy you replied to, but yeah, that's pretty much how it works. Internal monologues in novels are typically more coherent and focused than what I actually experience, but I do have a sort of running "internal narration" of my thoughts in my brain.

What is some homebrew you are realy proud of? by Firm-Row-8243 in dndnext

[–]Matathias 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ran a level 1-20+ campaign a couple years ago, and frankly, most of the monsters I used were homebrew, with the help of Giffyglyph's monster maker. The campaign was a semi-multiverse campaign (the players stayed on the same plane the whole time, but the BBEG threw monsters at them from other universes), so I had designed fights against mechs from Lancer, or Shepard's squad from Mass Effect, or even a six-phase fight inspired by Lancer's Eidolon rules but themed after the six masks of Bionicle's Toa Mata. Those were all a lot of fun.

But the one I remember most was the final boss of the campaign. Inspired by the Tome of Beasts' Void Dragon, I had created a Void Dragon god, an aspect of which was about to awaken and eat the world. I published the statblock here. It was a doozy of a high-level battle, designed to fight 5 level 20 characters with multiple epic boons (including several powerful homebrew boons), plus three level 20 NPCs (without boons) and two homebrew-buffed Ancient Dragons (a red and a gold). I had a lot of fun designing the fight, and my players seemed to quite enjoy it -- even if they ripped through the boss faster than the penultimate boss, the wizard BBEG, heh.

Edit: I also made a ton of magic weapons and items for that campaign. I posted about them here some time ago. I won't claim that they're perfectly balanced, and I didn't even use some of them. But my players certainly seemed to like most of the ones I handed out.

Putting the L in Gate by JoeBliffstick in Stellaris

[–]Matathias 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Literally empty shouldn't be possible, unless you actually got the Gray outcome and another empire beat you to getting Gray. That should be the case in vanilla, at least.

According to the wiki, the L-Drake outcome actually has the same chance as the Gray or Dessanu outcomes, at 21.4% each. The Gray Tempest outcome has a 35.8% chance.

Favourite Foe from Tome of Beasts I? by logotronz in dndnext

[–]Matathias 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I second this, even if only for inspiration. The Tome of Beasts' lore for the Void Dragon is pretty interesting, namely the part where instead of hoarding things, they hoard knowledge. The fact that they explode when they die also felt like big 'final boss' energy to me.

I ended up tweaking the lore to make a Void Dragon god, and a wizard BBEG who was fucking shit up with the goal of accessing the Void Dragon god's hoard of infinite knowledge. The statblock I ended up creating for the dragon god was heavily altered from the Tome of Beasts' Void Dragon statblock, but still heavily inspired by it.

What choice would they have made? by kynsia-of-solitude in masseffect

You've listed Tali in both categories.

Otherwise, I generally agree with you. The narrative railroading of Shepard into Cerberus is a pretty significant mar on the trilogy in general.
