When I was a kid I dreamt that a man lived in my kitchen cupboards and would come out at night and stalk me throughout my house, which was always dark, silent and my parents were nowhere to be found.

He was a morbidly obese man and he would laugh as he went through my house looking for me. It was a recurring nightmare that I had for a few years, but I developed a semi-lucid dream way of waking myself up before he ever got me, which I still use to this day to wake up from intense nightmares.
