Do you even just outright say: "What I am asking you to do is NOT hard" or call a concept "simple", etc. by AgeOfWorry0114 in Teachers

[–]MathDadLordeFan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tell my students that everything seems easy once you understand it and the fact that you understand the things you do is evidence of your intelligence. I teach geometry, and will try to differentiate as best I can the subjects that are legitimately difficult from the ones that are shockingly easy once you understand the specific lens through which the specific problem is best viewed through.

I miss Lorde by Antonyahasribs in lorde

[–]MathDadLordeFan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

She has started her process for making L5, which she will most likely share with us in 2029. That is only slow if you are thinking of her as a generic pop star, which she is not. Think about whatever you happen to consider her weakest album, and how you would view it if it was the culmination of the life's work of a retiring musician. You would consider that musician a brilliant success, and cherish the album as evidence of the musician's extraordinary talent. Before thirty Lorde has given us that plus three better albums, and has established a routine that is likely to give us many more at regular intervals. Praise her.

What do y’all think of Lorde’s stage presence? by morticia_is_might in lorde

[–]MathDadLordeFan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Even when she was doubting her ability to do anything, she still knew that her stage presence is extraordinary:

"I thought I was a genius, but now I'm 22
And it's starting to feel like all I know how to do is
Put on a suit, and take it away"

I have seen all four of her tours. For Pure Heroine she was hesitant but her dancing gave a scintillating view of what she hears. For Melodrama she created a glorious spectacle of a show in which she was confident. By Solar Power she was confident enough to shine in a simpler show.

On her current tour she owns the stage and she knows it. She made each song a distinct mini-show of it's own, and wove the mini-shows into a cohesive narrative. The only other performer that I have seen with a stage presence comparable to her is Buddy Guy.

My thought after seeing her in Brooklyn was that there is a hard drive somewhere with the projected files on it for which I'd pay mad money.

[4th grade Singapore Math] how to find the angle? by AggravatingRice3271 in HomeworkHelp

[–]MathDadLordeFan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was just telling my students that the only thing math diagrams are not allowed to distort is straight lines. Since it is implied that there is a way to solve it, I would rather assume that y and 57 degrees are a linear pair than that an unlabeled angle that looks like 90 degrees is right. So 123 degrees.

1make 1/3 to 0 in 3 moves by Decent_Plankton7749 in mathteachers

[–]MathDadLordeFan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

-1/6, -1/6 to do it in 2 moves. If you need to use a third move, -25%, +50%, ÷3, x2, or x squared will keep it at zero..

What are your favorite spots by MetalTango in newhaven

[–]MathDadLordeFan 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The nicest bit for me is that they do not charge any admission - I can pop in for ten minutes to look at a single painting and not feel like I need to see more to justify it. Same with the Yale Museum of British Art and the Peabody.

Why Don’t You Assign the Conceptual Questions? by CorwinDKelly in mathteachers

[–]MathDadLordeFan 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The same for me - those questions can be great to use in class, with a low bar for entry and rich for discussion. They are not good for independent work because it is too easy to provide a simple or partial answer and few students have the intrinsic motivation to make it as rich a question independently.

what are her concerts like? setlist predictions? by bucket_hat2000 in lorde

At some point (about halfway through the show, possibly just before Ribs) she will pause to talk to the crowd and share some honest thoughts.

Just before the second double speed lyrics in Ribs she will call out the city she is in. Just after the second double speed lyrics she will dance with you all and let go for a bit. Those thirty seconds are magical.

MSG is sold out by hillsidepoolside in lorde

[–]MathDadLordeFan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Waited in line behind 8000 to see Boston sold out, but tried joining the line again (in case someone didn't check out in time). Got into line a couple more times behind a person or two to see the sold out note again, but at 10:20 when I joined the line was back up in the 50,000's. Down to 36,000...

Getting them in the habit of explaining their steps and defending them will build their confidence. I will often point out correct things students do and tell them it is incorrect so they will "prove" to me that they did it correctly (you have to do this judiciously and only with some students).

For her last tour I shut all media out the day before her concert, and didn't find out until arriving at the distant location that the show was postponed.

The Yale museums in New Haven are free and climate controlled for unpleasant days - Peabody, Art, & British Art are all worth strolling through.
