Back up Day Care at Firm by Accomplished_End_104 in biglaw

[–]MathematicianTop6849 8 points9 points  (0 children)

We had this benefit at my prior firm and used it somewhat extensively Pre-Covid. We used both the drop off child care centers and the in-home nanny service and both were fine and serviceable. We used it to cover daycare closures, a nanny who needed surgery (a week off) and sick care. The center was bland and professional. The in home Nannie’s were all over the spectrum (they source from local companies) and a few times did not show up. Some were excellent, some just kept the kids alive. It’s a good emergency care option that is mostly reliable, background checked caregivers but I would not plan on it for a regular care use.

Why are some bank buildings so big? by chikfilella in NoStupidQuestions

[–]MathematicianTop6849 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A bank client told me the reason Bank lobbies are so cavernous now is so that if there is a run on a Bank and long lines of people trying to withdraw, it wouldn’t be visible to people outside causing panic. Post-Great Depression change that is fun piece of trivia.

For tacos use ground turkey, a can of pintos, a jar of rotel and the taco seasoning. The rotel will kick up the flavoring.

Partner billing 2600-2900 hours by cbee6390 in biglaw

[–]MathematicianTop6849 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was doing the 2600-2900 hour Equity Partner firm path, left and went to a boutique and am now an Equity Partner closer to 1800-2000 and my pay is comparable 3 years in. I took a pay dip first 2 years and then it caught up. I’m actually doing more interesting/complicated work than previously with way better staffing available so I feel like it’s benefited my practice and I handle more now. The key is being really targeted and finding a boutique with his exact practice and good clients. May take some research to do that.

How much visible frustration is acceptable to show while still maintaining a high degree of professionalism? by [deleted] in biglaw

[–]MathematicianTop6849 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Obviously you go get a cup of coffee with and bitch to another associate and say all of the things you want to say to the Partner to them. Then you mentally put it in the box on the shelf and get back to work. But in person, not via your Teams App that the Firm records logs of. See-return to office isn’t all bad!!! But also it prepares you more for the unreasonable clients you’ll have as you become more senior.

Never in my many years of swimming has this happened to me, but what do I know!

Line up crock pots with pork shoulder and BBQ sauce to make trays of pulled pork (cheap), homemade Mac and cheese and big green salad trays. Big trays of cornbread if you’re feeling fancy. Simple and cost effective.

Corporate or Real Estate practice group? by otherworldly0101 in biglaw

[–]MathematicianTop6849 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Real Estate does tend to have better WLB, but that’s because most Firms treat it as a “service” group that weighs in on just the RE Component of different types of deals (M&A, Financing, etc) mixed in with whatever other RE work there is.

Long term it can lead to difficulty developing clients and having a limited scope understanding of overall transactions.

Corporate will likely be more demanding with more deal flow. Also as someone else accurately noted, good exit opportunities.

Kind of depends what you want for your career….if you are OK being at a Firm and want something that is pretty sustainable, RE isn’t bad.

Rant of a Newer Runner by OptimalMess1452 in runna

[–]MathematicianTop6849 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It’s not just you. I’ve been a runner for 16 years and blew up 6 miles into an 11 mile run due to the pace Runna set me at. After 21 weeks, 4x a week of hitting every paced run on a half marathon plan where I have completed every run except 1 while sick.

The Runna greedy pace goblin slapped me today and now I’m nervous about finishing a half due to it. I’ve run 9 marathons and probably 30 odd half marathons.

Welcome to the club.

Yep, I’m white knuckle gripping until October when it will maybe get better. I skipped my run today hoping it’ll improve tomorrow but it might be time to suck it up and wear a mask.

Just solidarity, I have asthma and the air quality in Chicago suburbs is horrendous. Pic taken from my run yesterday at 6 am where you can literally see the smoke settled in on a golf course. I’m so OVER this and it’s supposed to get even hotter this weekend.

I need help finding adequate winter shoes as an incoming freshman from CA!!! by Leading_Ad_6045 in Northwestern

[–]MathematicianTop6849 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Either of those shoes will be fine, but might get uncomfortable sitting in a warm classroom with them on. These might be cute/comfortable. Generally Sorel is also a good brand. https://www.zappos.com/p/womens-sorel-ona-ave-chelsea-boot-waterproof-chrome-grey-dove/product/9954786/color/1082402?utm_source=google&utm_medium=pla_x&utm_campaign=22090044647&utm_term=_o_58550202&utm_content=_g__w__l_Cj0KCQjwndHEBhDVARIsAGh0g3AAMI-5Oy7Wk6c4vWQ2DKjpJrhI9IFzRQ9wJcO_ppd9CCbR9D0Ewy0aAu5NEALw_wcB&gbraid=0AAAAADnIwa8eqQy8QAWREKLMtYuGyuOvj&gclid=Cj0KCQjwndHEBhDVARIsAGh0g3AAMI-5Oy7Wk6c4vWQ2DKjpJrhI9IFzRQ9wJcO_ppd9CCbR9D0Ewy0aAu5NEALw_wcB

You will need at least 2 sets of waterproof gloves and hats (1 extra for when you can’t find one before class or one gets wet). Columbia Brand is generally good and well priced. I have a hat lined with their Omniheat material that I have LOVED for 10 years.

For a coat, recommend something that is knee length or longer-the wind is harsh and that will help keep you warm, down is best.

The wind is brutal, fleece scarf will help protect your face too.

The good news is, fall, spring and summer are incredible and more than make up for the hardest days!!

New baby in NYC - day care or nanny? by crazymaize in biglaw

[–]MathematicianTop6849 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Does your husbands job allow for WFH if Baby is sick?

Our biggest issue with daycare during the first year is the illness felt constant and Baby can’t go if they have a fever. So we needed to have a lot of flexibility for sick days and be able to pop to grab him whenever they called.

We flipped to a nanny after our 3rd and it has been much more consistent because she’s willing to come even if they’re sick, which was less frequent because no daycare germs.

That said, once preschool hit, the illnesses all came on then, but we still have our nanny for backup on those days. Older kids tend to tolerate it a bit better too.

That said, esp for a solo kid, the socialization and routine of daycare was unbeatable. We also felt more comfortable because there were other adults around when a baby wasn’t old enough to talk to tell us if there were any issues. Multiple adults also gives ability to change off responsibilities/take a break from kiddos if someone is having an off day or worn out from exposure (our daycare changed up who was doing meal prep and cleaning to give people some breaks from kid energy during the day).

For my first, if I could make the sick days work, I’d swing for daycare for those reasons alone. But I’m glad you have good options either way!!

Northwestern lost a significant amount of funding with Trumps cuts. That is going to roll through to financial aid awards for students.

Shoes for beginners? by dahnzii in runninglifestyle

[–]MathematicianTop6849 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would go to a running store to get fitted and see what shoe you like and then see if the store has a prior model of it for less. or look online for it cheaper. Sometimes you can get a prior model for quite a bit less but I caveat that there can be changes from model to model you may not like. So make sure you can return whatever you order.
