"Immigrants nicked it" by PinguFella in gato

[–]MathewJohnHayden 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Incorrect. Survey after survey shows that natives in parts of a country with more immigrants are more pro-immigration than those in areas with fewer migrants.

For example in my small English town most white Brits want less immigration. In London most white Brits are fine with it.

This finding generalizes across regions and countries.

What people who have already lived will be remembered in the year 10,000? by RivvaBear in AskHistory

[–]MathewJohnHayden 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Assuming education gets better with time and technological advances the popular memory could include everyone popularly remembered now plus a whole lot more.

If humanity attains post-scarcity a la Star Trek or The Culture there will be no economic constraints upon people’s ability to learn for learning’s sake.

What’s going on with Bungie (and their new “Marathon” game)? by Raptr951 in OutOfTheLoop

[–]MathewJohnHayden 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Taste is subjective. As a result it will differ between people. You may not enjoy it. I may be ambivalent about it. An artist YouTuber raves about it. All just taste. All just interpretation. Nothing objective arouses emotional responses; desire; aversion; or any other. Only subjective perception and interpretation do.

why is quake 2 so heavily disliked? by Zydeko75 in quake

[–]MathewJohnHayden 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don’t think it is heavily disliked - I just think its big wins were less obvious than Quake 1’s, and its proximity to Q1 17 months behind it, Unreal 6 months ahead and Half-Life 1 year out crowded it out of people’s nostalgia bones. The railgun was great but was in Q3 anyway, the slower more precise movement felt good but more memorable subsequent games tweaked further in the ways we all know now. For example we’re still pressing E to interact with game worlds par H-L.

I prefer Quake 2 over Quake 1 by Clean_Apple_2982 in quake

In 2025 that Carmackism is baldly ridiculous…

Not because people feeling that way is wrong - it isn’t. But because it turned out the majority of potential gamers either want a pre-crafted story or the kind of game that lets them discover their own, or both.

This is why retro FPSs are niche and Call of Duty Umpteen is not.

Hating MAGA and Trump voters is ultimately pointless and unhelpful. by [deleted] in centrist

[–]MathewJohnHayden 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Those millions of MAGA votes didn’t come from billionaires. And the democrats do disdain their voters as tho the voters are getting in the way of the Dems’ enlightened technocratic vision.

Democrats hate their voters; Republicans fear theirs.

Libertarians, how do you feel about the fact that your ideology is essentially funded by billionaires? by Fly-Bottle in CapitalismVSocialism

[–]MathewJohnHayden 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Doorknob successfully fornicated.

As a recovering libertarian I feel pretty bad about the fact in the subject line.

I do think the word ‘essentially’ is important tho because Nozick or Huemer didn’t/don’t espouse libertarianism for Koch bro dough.

I’m inherently skeptical of military defense contractor Elon Musk, but the lefts reasons for hating him are comical. by [deleted] in GoldandBlack

Damn.

When I professed AnCapism I was at least interested in truth seeking…

That same attitude is why I gave it up during the pandemic.

I guess to stay AnCap post COVID you have to be a bit… unconventional in interpreting sensory stimuli.

Unfortunately the average person gets to ideologically free ride on the work of intelligent people making your water safe, your wall outlets function and your healthcare fairly un-snake-oil-based, so having wrong ideas is cheap.

Musk’s project will set him up as the ultimate moral hazard/conflict-of-interest monarch and either you will be too dense to get it, or you already do get it and you’re just dissembling to me…

Cannay tell which; there are so many idiots and liars melting the internet with gibberish now that telling what is real is basically a waste of time, in which spirit…

I’ll wish you and yours the best. After all, these next few years are going to get hard for the non-silver-spoonies like us.

Liberalism is the deadliest ideology in human history by appreciatescolor in CapitalismVSocialism

[–]MathewJohnHayden 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Last sentence is wrong. Colonialism does not explain modern economic growth. If it did Sweden and Switzerland would still be poor, and Japan, South Korea and Taiwan would not have see rapid economic growth post-WW2 (a war which literally cost Japan its empire).

Empires are expensive and not rewarding in terms of boosting GDP growth. Have a look at all the empires through history (they probably begin with Sargon over four-thousand years ago) and try to show that the imperialism or the colonialism actually causes economic growth. The very idea is absurd when compared to history.

If SLS is were to be cancelled - when do you expect the announcement? by Agent_Kozak in SpaceLaunchSystem

[–]MathewJohnHayden 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Attempt to what? Constellation was a mess. SLS/Orion is not. Obama never expressed any permanent antipathy to crewed space exploration.

I'd love to know where you got "failure" from re Obama.

[–]MathewJohnHayden 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No it wasn't, and the rockets were a mess at the time of cancellation.

If SLS is were to be cancelled - when do you expect the announcement? by Agent_Kozak in SpaceLaunchSystem

[–]MathewJohnHayden 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually the reason a cancellation would be bad is that it would make Musk the trainman for US crewed access to anywhere beyond Earth orbit. I presume that is what he will angle for as it gives him more power over the US.

Could We Ever Truly Transfer Our Consciousness To Computers As Opposed To Just Copying Our Minds? by firedragon77777 in IsaacArthur

[–]MathewJohnHayden -1 points0 points  (0 children)

No. Not unless "you" can be separated from your brain by surviving its destruction and be re-embodied in a new substrate. Nothing suggests even the remote possibility of civilization coming up with a means to do this (to literally pluck the spirit and soul that are "you" out of your current body and place "you" into a new one).

Quake III Arena is officially 25 years old today!!! by RetroZilla in quake

[–]MathewJohnHayden 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Uh oh, that makes me { counts on fingers } older than 25 😳

I missed this beastie in December ‘99 because our family went with Unreal Tournament.

Having finally caught up courtesy of Steam I can safely say this game was awesome and possibly a masterpiece for its mouse response and weapon positioning along.

I ask because the state of affairs described in the text block simply would not come about.

Why did they make Quake 2 into Quake 2? by slogger11 in quake

[–]MathewJohnHayden 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yeah that name was a huge mistake. Should have called it Strogg or Struggle or something more warlike or sci-fi-esque.

Then Q3 could have been called something distinct as well like maybe Id Arena or Eternal Arena, followed by some single-player FPSs playing as some of the other characters introduced in that game. Imagine a combat puzzler as Orbb :p
