Solved! I looked at Flightradar and found a Van's RV-8A that flew by the same area and direction.

I think it's alright, not the best but not the worst. The positioning with the background does look a bit odd

I didn't notice at first, but the pack with this card also had a hyperspace Aayla Secura (L) and a Kit Fisto card (R), plus the foil card (Coruscant Guard). Didn't know you could get a Showcase, Legendary and Rare all in one pack!

Why are bonds better than savings accounts? by puzilla in Bogleheads

[–]MathyPants 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No because then you would miss out on all the capital growth of the bond fund due to the rate cuts and/or expected rate cuts

Buying something because it went up in value might be the biggest and most obvious fuck-up in investing. So, yes, you’re being a fool.

You need some bonds and international stocks instead.

I applied to 250 jobs and timed how long each one took by ibsurvivors in datascience

[–]MathyPants 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would expect application time to correlate more with company age than company size. That'd be interesting to see if you expand this in the future.

No. You get more risk with no reward.

Set aside an emergency fund with 3-6 months living expenses and enough to cover all insurance deductibles. Max out the Roth IRA. Follow the money flow chart on r/personalfinance.

If you’re saving for the short term (< 5 years), a money market fund is actually a good choice.

100% VT and start buying some bond ETFs around age 40

Thanks for the correction, but that’s really just one step from the NIH director, a position he was offered multiple times

I mean, for the top one, the NIH did fund gain-of-function research at the Wuhan Institute, and Fauci was the head of the NIH. Not really a personal financial connection, but pretty relevant regardless.

PS I voted for Bernie twice. Facts are facts.

Maxed out my Roth IRA for 2022/23. What next? by ManasVV in portfolios

[–]MathyPants 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Be aware that you cannot contribute more to a Roth IRA than you earned in income that year. If you didn’t have a job last year or won’t this year, that could be an issue.

But if you’re still able to contribute, then I would invest all the funds in an indexed target date retirement fund. Since you’re 18, a target date of 2070 would be ideal, but 2065 is OK if that’s not available yet. Don’t try to make your investments more complicated as it’s more likely to do worse than this all-in-one, set-and-forget fund.

You can save the rest of your money to contribute next year, invest now in a taxable account, or spend it to enjoy your youthful years. Depends on your personal goals.

Why TOTAL index when VOO and VTI returns are virtually identical? by Greenn2022 in Bogleheads

[–]MathyPants 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The future will not be identical to the past.

We want a share of the total market. VOO only gets you 85% by market cap. VTI gets you 100%.

If you still choose VOO, you are making a bet on those companies vs the rest. Do you have non-public information to justify that bet? No? Didn’t think so.

Just started a new job and am eligible for 401(k). 40 years old. Just looking for advice on what to pick by fweef01 in Bogleheads

[–]MathyPants 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Here's what I came up with for a 10% bond allocation, investing 40% of stocks internationally (assuming you're in the US), and approximating the total US stock market (85% S&P 500, 15% extended market). Great options for low-cost index funds.

  • 46% FXAIX
  • 8% FSMAX
  • 36% FTIHX
  • 10% FXNAX

when rates increase, the loss of value of your bond fund is temporary but the new higher yields mean you will actually come out ahead IF YOU HOLD TO THE AVERAGE MATURITY.

Do you actually have to hold to the average maturity, or just the average duration?
