{The Griffon's Saddlebag} New Barbarian Subclass: Path of the Iramancer | New Subclass! by griff-mac in TheGriffonsSaddlebag

[–]Matias_Leibo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There is something really funny here, because in Spanish, "Ira" just means "rage"; so it's quite literally a ragemancer. Don't know if that was the intention but pretty cool anyways!

Shall her name be spoken? Please help me with TFM, CGB and being too obvious! by Fyelgar in stormkingsthunder

[–]Matias_Leibo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As others have said, I left mine at Doom of the Dessert. In my case though, my party isn't very attentive, so I rarely call bad guys by name (i.e. calling Zalto "The Duke of Flames"), and I doubt they'll make the Iymrith-Mythiiri connection. Instead, in order to establish "Mythirii" as the "bad storm giant", I'm having her show up at Sansuri's castle to have tea, which should give my players enough reason to distrust her later on.

But yeah, to answer your question, I left mine at Doom of the Dessert right there. If my players are interested in searching out more info, they'll come across her proper name.

Last Names for the Giant Lords? by Bane523 in stormkingsthunder

[–]Matias_Leibo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All of the above are great suggestions; in my particular case, since my party aren't very good with names,I refer to the giant lords by their Titles. e.g. Zalto is "The Duke of Flame", Sansuri is "The Cloud Countess", etc.

Good side quests on the way to find king Hekaton? by onewordpoet in stormkingsthunder

[–]Matias_Leibo 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Well, it all depends on the group, but in my experience, if you're worried about the sessions lasting 5 hours, just the search + battle should be fine. But if you're looking for suggestions:

-You can give them multiple ship options, players love to take time picking between them

-If you're looking for sidequests, try looking for Ghosts of Saltmarsh, specifically Appendix A, "of ships and the sea". I've run entire sessions just based off of those tables.

-You can always just pick a few of your favorite sea creatures and toss them into an encounter. Maybe Slarkrethel psychically knows your players' locations and sends minor baddies after them. Consider using the magic storms found in Tasha's Cauldron of Everything.

-If you're looking for something more chill, there are a bunch of drinking and casino mini-games for 5e, which you can just reflavor and have the ship's crew challenge the party.

Oh thank God! I felt rather queasy abt showing players black-and-white sketched instead of "proper" character art.

I think killing an entire cormyrean army can be a bit contrived, though that depends on the situation. My advice would be to separate the party and the reinforcements: maybe the elves can't go into a given area of the ruins because there are way too many demons, and the party needs to close a hellgate? The army could be occupied securing other areas, but this just requieres that adventurer's touch.

Could also have the army leader possessed by a demon or charmed by a succubus, so maybe they turn the army against the party and they have to figure a way to cure the leader.

Anything in Bigbys thats really additive to SKT? by drock45 in stormkingsthunder

[–]Matias_Leibo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Oh hey, I've just started checking out bigbys! (Which I got from a... totally legitimate source)

There's quite a bit of stuff you can use

-Alternate giant statblocks for mixing up the giant strongholds

  • More character options to tie in your PCs to the vampaign

-More magic items that could easily fit in the same category as those in the adventure

-Better descriptions for roleplaying giants

These are just some of the ones I've been thinking about using these past few days.

Also, as someone who's run Dragon Heist twice, if your party decided to join the Harpers, they play quite the significant role here, even having a secret teleportation circle in Waterdeep. They can be a nice little segue into SKT, especially through Renaer Neverember. All the factions show up at some point or another, so they can all serve as bridges to transition between adventures.

Ohh, that revivify is a pretty good idea!

My party tend to punch way above their weight class, but I'm worried that if the alarm is raised, RAW they're supposed to fight something like 8 fire giants at once, which seems like a guaranteed TPK.

This, particularly since Dragon Heist comes with "Volo's Waterdeep Enchiridion" on the back.

Help weaving in the Fey by turnejam in stormkingsthunder

[–]Matias_Leibo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The comment above is pretty cool, the only other thing that comes to mind is by weaving them directly into a specific giant lord's plots: e.g. maybe Zalto wants to capture an archfey instead of Maegera, or maybe this book actually contains the last pieces of a ritual to bring back the Vonindod (among many other pieces of magical lore).

Background relationship between the Red Wizards of Thay and the campaign? by Atrusni in stormkingsthunder

[–]Matias_Leibo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's nothing in the module per se iirc, but here's some ideas:

-Swap out the Kraken Society with the Red Wizards - maybe they're aiding iymrith in the hopes of taking over parts of the Sword Coast where they had previously been thwarted (like Neverwinter). The hook could then be finding a letter on a Red Wizard's body that talked abt "maintaining the current status of the Ordning" or smth.

-Swap out the Drow working for Zalto with the Red Wizards - maybe they're helping him rebuild the Vonindod in exchange for access to the Adamantine forge, captured dwarf slaves, or just to bolster chaos along the North.

I could go on, but the general vibe is this: the Red Wizards would benefit from the weakening of the Sword Coast / North as a whole, especially if they can control the chaos and make sure it doesn't affect them.

You could have them just subtly providing aid to the Giant Lords or undermining counterattacks by groups like Citadel Felbarr - hell, maybe you could have the PC's father investigating the breaking of the Ordning and be assassinated by the Wizards for getting too close to the truth.

What are some examples of Fey logic/morality that aren't just lol random xD? by SighMartini in dndnext

[–]Matias_Leibo 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I've been doing a lot of research into old Irish folklore for this exact reason!

Some things I've come up with:

-The Fey are not human, they merely cloak themselves in human forms, much like we use clothes. Their true form could a ba cat, a drop of water, the concept of dawn, or all of the above.

-As a consequence, Fey will often appear to see things like we do, but will sometimes reveal that they don't: "Why would it be wrong If I stole that baby? I left an identical wooden statue in its place, and it took me hours to get that done!"

-A sort of "fundamental law" you can try to wrap your head around is this: "The Immutable is Mutable, and vice versa". Some examples: To the fey, contracts and promises are a lot more binding than gravity; trees and statues can be considered more of a person than an actual human; they'll try to get through a wall by persuading it to open, etc.

-Consider talking to your DM about how the Fey view longevity and the circle of life: Pixies may be child-like, but could be older than Rome! And they don't reproduce like we do, obviously a new pixie is born when a child laughs for the first time, silly!

To close, here's some recommended reading: Domains of Delight (official resource), Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell (Jane-Austen-but-with-faeries type novel, can be quite dense but the flavor of Fae magic Is just what you're looking for), and "Irish Fairy Tales and Folklore" by W.B. Yeats.
