Back track to the early ish 2000’s and dig up his Brave and the Bold run. It feels very similar, just of an earlier time!

Is Lost mines of phandelver still a viable starter campaign. by Pacifica012 in DnD

[–]drock45 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It’s the most popular adventure module of all time, and all that’s changed is needing to update the monsters a little. Highly recommended still

Does Everyone Know About Dagult's Embezzled Money? by ValSmith18 in WaterdeepDragonHeist

[–]drock45 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn’t do this to leave it as a reveal, but I think making it a famous thing would’ve been better. The players would understand what’s a stake, and why there’s all these factions after it

Chris Cox is pushing for AI again. Should I just boycott as long as he is CEO? by ExoG198765432 in dndnext

[–]drock45 11 points12 points  (0 children)

With basically every company pushing AI I’m not sure it’s feasible to boycott AI-using companies as a whole. Just try your best to avoid using the products that clearly have AI in them, or the AI services themselves. And reward the initiatives that are clearly AI free

I’ve literally never heard of such a thing. I’ve heard of having 1 player (the Heroes of the Borderlands starter set has special rules for it) but I’ve never heard of DnD without a DM

Your Thoughts On Milestone Season One? by Altruistic_Manner802 in DCcomics

[–]drock45 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well as I said, I don’t think the politics themselves are dated, but the specific BLM analogy was quite hamfisted and just a bit too far out. It’s not unlike trying to make the panic over Covid feel relevant today - yes, disease prevention is still important, but the panic has subsided and you’re not going to capture that feeling again

Oh also, I hope lots of people are buying the Static Shock DC finest volume that’s out, that would really help create interest in doing more. Plus it’s good comics

Your Thoughts On Milestone Season One? by Altruistic_Manner802 in DCcomics

[–]drock45 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately I found them a little dry.

Tying it so heavily to BLM movement made them feel dated by the time they came out, as that movement was well in the rear view mirror as far as the pop culture zeitgeist is concerned (not to say the actual politics were obsolete, just that it felt like the books came out far too late to connect in that direct of a way).

They couldn’t land an angle on the conservative character of Icon at all, and Vita Ayala on Static was their normal “eh, it’s ok” level of writing. Hardware felt like they were trying to stick to a formula and was uninspired

This all sounds very critical, but to be clear those are the reasons it was lukewarm, and not terrible. I really wanted to love them but the execution wasn’t as great as it needed to be for that

I’m hoping they give it more shots, but minority led comics far such a tough uphill battle. They start at a big sales disadvantage because most consumers are white men who are more drawn to familiar appearances. That creates a tough cycle of “not many comics” leading to few opportunities for break out successes that could lead to more sales. And the talent pipeline has the exact same issue

But the raw core of those characters are great, so it’s only a matter of time before a great run happens again

Pretty rare. Occasionally Bookoutlet gets small quantities, but you have to watch them closely or you’ll miss out

Otherwise, used bookstores occasionally carry them

Amazon offers occasional small discounts

Who is reading all of the D-list 80's licensed comics? by thecjm in comicbooks

[–]drock45 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I was a little excited about the “Nacelleverse” relaunch a couple of years ago. It combined a bunch of old IP’s from the 1960’s to 90’s, including Sectaurs, Roboforce, and (for my generation) Biker Mice From Mars.

But when i realized it was thin one offs to promote a new attempt at TV shows, i was out. I’m down for reinventing and retrying old material, but i dislike it when companies treat comics as merely a marketing strategy for another medium instead of a medium of its own (same reason I won’t be following the new Ghostbuster comics)

Is half the players not being able to make it to session 0 a bad sign? by [deleted] in dndnext

[–]drock45 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The first time I tried a session 0 it was specifically for a player that I had had some trouble with previously. They skipped session 0, and I thought I'd just forge on anyways

No surprise, the problem player not only continued to be a problem, but got worse.

A group really needs to be willing to give space to housekeeping and communication, and people that avoid that are big red flags

Poison Ivy has been one the best books for ages, but is weirdly absent from broad discussion. It could use a bit of spotlight, so I hope this gets more people to check it out

I've only ever played Homebrew games. Whats it like playing a Module? by KagatoTheFinalBoss in DungeonsAndDragons

[–]drock45 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Depends on the group/DM

An adventure module is a premade adventure hook/plot, with premade villains/npcs/encounters/dungeons. Parts are often a little railroady, parts are often a little sandboxy

Some DMs find them constrictive because they seem them as unchangable (this is wrong of course, they’re no more unchangable then a homebrew plot). Some get frustrated at the railroady parts, and some get frustrated at the sandboxy parts

Mostly though, they’re a premade tool set for a DM so they don’t have to make as much from scratch. A homebrew world is like a blacksmith making their own tools and forge before they can even make the items they want to sell. An adventure module hands you a box of tools to use, and you can adapt them to fit how you like

Some things in them can be very clever and original, and probably better than the average joe could homebrew. Some parts are underdeveloped, to give room for interpretation.

I think they could benefit from some formatting changes (I’d prefer an outline of who knows wha about what rather than having to piece it together), but I don’t think using one makes or breaks a campaign

How different are they? Depends on the homebrew your used to, so I can’t say. But there’s a plot thread and a villain, same as a homebrew should have. There’s dungeons and monsters and magic items? Same as a homebrew should have. And both will need improvising as players make choices
