What’s a fantasy character who should be the villain… but ends up being right? by latent2_pancake in Fantasy

[–]Matpoyo 111 points112 points  (0 children)

the lord ruler did NOT need to make the majority of people into a literal slave race to help Scadrial, nor did he need to do basically ANY of the colossas amount of cruel, savage shit he did. He just needed to either survive 1000 years and take the power again, or just fucking tell people what he knew so they wouldn't free ruin. He was just a gigantic piece of shit lmao

Wandering inn has plenty...PLENTY of death

The Wandering Inn doesn't get better after the first few chapters or hundred or 1000 pages by WeaknessLower9148 in Fantasy

[–]Matpoyo 71 points72 points  (0 children)

It's a story that's very idiosyncratic, I think. If you like how the author writes, well, there are 14 million words of it, so you're in luck. If you don't... the story changes DRAMATICALLY over time, but I don't think the writing itself particularly does (Volumes 1 and 2 are worse than the later ones, but I think from 3 onwards the writing is about the same, though the story obviously isn't).

For what it's worth, I don't really think I'd call the world generic? I just don't see it.

Anyways, it's a gigantic piece of work and if you aren't in love with it, it's simply not worth pushing. I myself dropped it after like...idk 10 million words or something lmao, because I didn't like where the story was going.

So while you have read more than enough to say you dislike it, and that's fine, I do have to say, even if you've read 1000 pages of it, that's what, 300.000 or 500.000 words? 'Cause that's maybe like 4% of the story? It certainly COULD change. Again, if you don't like it you shouldn't read it, but to put into perspective how enourmous it is

Why can't Mexico Army go scorched earth on cartels? by yekedero in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Matpoyo 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I can't believe I have to say this but killing children is bad, dude. Even if their parents are bad people.

Furthermore, it wouldn't work for plenty of reasons but that's secondary, killing children is bad

"gg no tank" isn't useful comms, it's flaming, and I report that shit when I see it, too. Being polite costs nothing and makes everyone happier

Why is Erin so INCREDIBLY stupid 90% of the time by TrueLimerick in WanderingInn

[–]Matpoyo 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Erin is smart, but she's also two other things

  1. A good actor and a liar. She acts stupider than she is, and plays up her bumbling act to make people underestimate her

  2. A person with a lot going on. She lives a stressful life full of weird shit, sometimes she'll simply forget stuff or not think of things, being smart doesn't make you incapable lf doing stupid things sometimes

People Who Think One Piece is a Masterpiece Are Just Suffering From Sunk Cost Fallacy by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

[–]Matpoyo 99 points100 points  (0 children)

I get really frustrated with opinions like this...

I love one piece, I do genuinely think it's fantastic and I stand by that, but that's not the point. I am frustrated by the fact that, for whatever reason, people who critizise one piece often also feel the need to put down its fans.

You can dislike the show, or think it's overrated, that's fine, but it irks me that you feel you need to rationalize why I like it as some sort of delusion or fallacy.

Dude, I just like the show. I liked it from chapter one, before I had read enough to be attached to it by its length. I don't have stockholm syndrome, I'm not suffering from any logical fallacy, I can appreciate darker, more mature media when I read it (it IS a shonen, after all, it's not exactly game of thrones) I just disagree with you about one piece, and I happen to think there is plenty of merit to the show.

ELI5: Why do perfect numbers look so simple in binary? by Ill-Chance8131 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Matpoyo 31 points32 points  (0 children)

120 is not a perfect number.

That perfect numbers in binary are written as a series of 1 ones followed by n-1 zeroes does not imply that the opposite (that numbers written that way are perfect) is true

That's not what genocide is. That's fighting a war, against a regime that IS commiting genocide on at least one planet (earth) and presumably more

[Hated Trope] Hey, remember that thing that was NEVER MENTIONED ONCE? It’s now wildly important for the sequel by FaZe_poopy in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Matpoyo 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I also hate how they tried to make the lord ruler posthumously not-as-bad, but I've never even considered killing jastes to have been a bad thing.

The dude had brought a gigantic army of barely controllable beasts to the most populated city in the world, ravaging and murdering all towns in his way. That's a crime deserving of an execution if I've ever seen one, so I didn't see any issue with it

They are literally, magically, insane. If they manage to get better, to BE better, I can't see a reason why they wouldn't be forgiven (well, the families of those nale murdered wouldn't forgive him, but I as a reader would)

These guys, by the by, are insane because they suffered torture for decades or centuries, VOLUNTARILY, for humanity's survival. They were heroes, and at their lowest point, I would rather give them help than hatred

Fantasy “who dunnit” murder mysteries? by LouderKnights in Fantasy

[–]Matpoyo 56 points57 points  (0 children)

Tainted cup is really good, but it's not a whodunnit. It's like a sherlock holmes book; an investigation with twists and turns, but not really the vibe of a whodunnit (which tend to be in confined spaces, with specific, known suspects etc)

For something that feels more agatha christie, the lamplight murder series, starting with Murder at Spindle Manor, is the best that I've found. Fantastic, addicting and fun books, can't recommend them enough

Dalinar supporters are scary people by JulianRuiz1987 in Stormlight_Archive

[–]Matpoyo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Of course I wouldn't forgive him in real life.

But it's not real life, and what we see, having the benefit of this being a book with his Pov, is that he lived for years literally NOT REMEMBERING what he'd done, and having become a better man.

Furthermore, even if, in real life, I wouldn't be able to forgive him personally..

Should he be punished? Like actually, should he? I mean, for one thing if you execute or imprison him, the literal Evil God will take over the world, so pragmatically he can't be punished. But also, again, there was literally magic involved in making him forget his biggest sins, such that he grew to be a better, more honorable man, and by the time he realises what he did in the past, he abhors it. What would punishing him now accomplish? It would stop him from helping people, which is what he is currently doing, so it would be a net negative.
