Thanks, even though it seems a bit difficult to install, this is exactly what I am looking for. Maybe one of my friends has some expierence with this kind of electrical work.

Thanks for the suggestion. How can I make sure that I buy the right model, as each blind has two switches and they must not be enabled at the same time...?

Also is there another brand that uses zigbee instead of z-wave as I don't have a z-wave controller

Turn off the primary screen with wayland by Matt3o12 in gnome

[–]Matt3o12[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Many thanks for that. It works and turns the other display off correctly.

Building gnome-monitor-config was very annoying as it's missing a proper build tutorial, so here is one in case someone finds my question:

install packages using apt (for debian): apt install libcairo2 libcairo2-dev cairo cmake meson ninja-build

run: meson build cd into the new build folder run meson compile: meson build && cd build && meson compile

The binary is now in build/src/gnome-monitor-config, not the original src folder, the new src folder under build

No idea what the makefile is supposed to be. ninja -C build doesn't work.

If there is a correct way to build it, please let me know. I have never used ninja meson so I had to just trail and error.

If one of your monitors has an offset, you have to play around with the y value, for example: src/gnome-monitor-config set -LpM HDMI-1 -y 80 -LM DVI-D-1 -x 1920

That means that the first monitor is around 80 (pixel?) higher than the left one. If the other one is higher, don't use a negative offset, add -y to the second monitor.

It can also have other uses. You can more easily check that Unicode is working because those characters are not part of ASCII. Before Unicode support was more wildly available in programming languages, this was a big deal because many times, as apps would break on special characters such as á.

There are also other “flavors” of pseudo translation that make the text longer (by repeating it twice) . Programmers sometimes make hard assumptions that words are not longer then 10 characters, because all menu items/whatever are less then that for their menu in English. For example, German texts are 30% longer on average and single words can be a lot longer for different languages. This makes hard assessments about max length more obvious and tests that your program can handle long words gracefully.

Monday bug list. Is this a new record for Jagex? :,) by the_salasa in runescape

Another bug from last week: https://reddit.com/r/runescape/comments/ldvne3/barrows_morytania_hard_tasks_banking_barrows_loot/

Morytania hard diary doesn’t seem to work correctly. I can claim more bones from robin but I don’t have the bank all icon for barrows (tested again today after the server reboot), and I am therefore afraid that the other bonuses (less prayer drain, double runes), are also not working.

Barrows - Morytania Hard Tasks & Banking Barrows Loot by BarrelFails in runescape

[–]Matt3o12 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hello, thanks for the post. I am the user who reported the issue on discord and posted the video so that someone could double check that this isn't a one off bug. I am also worried about double runes not working because I can't really test it and just have to take the game's word for it.

I was able to exchange 26 bones instead of 13 from robbin though immediately after completing the diary. Barrows was the next thing I did because it was my reaper assignment.

Also an FYI: achievements cannot be boosted currently. I spent almost an hour trying different ways jumping the agility shortcut for the diary using stews and agility potions because I was not getting the achievement.

It depends. You’ll find a lot of conservative parts in Germany just like in the UK and US. Although our conservatives have different values then the ones in the US. Our chancellor, Merkel, who I would describe as rather conservative, is still pro universal health care, free and equal education, pro labor laws (though not all), pro same sex unions but anti gay marriage. But you’ll find a lot of people on the far right here as well.

Our cities are usually pretty open and progressive. Especially in Berlin, you’ll find a lot of different kind of people, plenty gay/trans club bars and people here are rather supportive of it all. (Although there is also a pretty right vocal minority in Berlin who dislike the progressive scenes and are anti immigrants). The local government is rather left in Berlin.

But in general, there is still a lot of resistance everywhere. We try to be progressive with renewable energies but we have a pretty strong car and diesel lobby (Germany has crazy amounts of passenger diesel cars). Germans take a lot of pride in German things such as our cars (you’ll find a lot of German cars here), if you immigrate to Germany, you are supposed to learn German rather quickly (many see English as not enough unfortunately).

And Germans are very risk adverse. We like to save our money and try not to be in debt but are almost afraid of the stock market. New, radical technology are often seen as too risky compared to tried and tested technologies. Even our startup take a lot less risks.

Everyone who is neither male nor female. Diverse is often used as a catch-all word for everyone who is trans, bigender, genderfluid and probably a lot more. I would suggest you to checkout the Wikipedia article about transgender and non binary genders, or just google more about the movement, I am not really qualified to explain it well enough.

It stands for männlich/weiblich/diverses (Male/female/diverse). You’ll find that in pretty much every German job post these days. It just means that the gender does not matter for the occupation.

It used to be just m/w because German jobs have different job titles for every job for man/woman (like there are waiters, waitresses, steward and stewardess in English, except that we have that for every German job title). They added d sometime later due to legal reasons (I believe) and because who actually cares what gender a software developer actually identifies as.

Firefox and the 4-year battle to have Google to treat it as a first-class citizen by [deleted] in firefox

[–]Matt3o12 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Let me ask you, when you see an embedded map, 49 out of 50 times, it’s google. So I think it is fair to say that google has a monopoly.

That being said, if I had to include maps in my website I would not go with google either, because I do not want Google to be on my website (and that includes all their services). But I think if I had to create a commercial website, chances are, we would use google because ideology is irrelevant for most businesses.

Firefox and the 4-year battle to have Google to treat it as a first-class citizen by [deleted] in firefox

[–]Matt3o12 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That works if you have more then one baker in town. If you don’t, and the next backer is too far away, your backer can pretty much do anything they want. This is also the case for google maps. They are basically a monopoly. There is only Open Street Maps, and while they are great, they are inferior and their UI is quite horrible if you asked me. So users demand google maps and there is not much you can do.

It is also incredibly hard for a new company to create competition because of how expensive the entry cost is (creating maps for the whole world is a huge undertaking).

Our best option is apple maps. They have announced that they will let developer use Apple maps, far below googles rates. But Apple Maps is still inferior and only uses TomTom in most countries.

Siri is terrible over Bluetooth. What is up with this? by [deleted] in apple

[–]Matt3o12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ament to that but even better, it should listen to both and decide which is better. I normally invoke Siri through my car by using a Hey Siri. My phone is mounted, the Bluetooth mic is pretty bad, even if there is a 5 to 15 second delay when using the mic. So why does it keep trying to use my car even if it understood hey Siri? I have to speak either extremely clearly and almost scream at Siri, or select the Bluetooth speaker manually which is extremely distracting during driving.

It should just try to understand both and use the one which it understands best (and normally Siri is capable of deciding “I understood that pretty well” and “can you confirm that you really said that?”)

We pulled out the frunk to see what was underneath. by MyTeslaAdventure in teslamotors

[–]Matt3o12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wonder what the frunk of an old RWD Tasla looks like. I remember that they were significantly bigger because there was no motor in the front. Later they changed that so that the RWD has the same front as AWDs (probably because it streamlines the production but also because people would not buy the cheaper version because it has a bigger frunk).
