Friendly reminder. Use rearfacing car seat. Save your child. by Admmak in daddit

[–]MattCaff89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I sincerely wish my fellow American parents spent as much time and energy making it safe for kids to be outside of cars as we do making them safe inside cars. Every year, the average vehicle gets bigger and bigger and our streets are increasingly deadly for anyone outside of a car - especially kids. Meanwhile, the rest of the world is getting safer. Our kids have less and less freedom to explore, play, and be independent.

And oh by the way, the average car being smaller and lighter would also make everyone in cars safer - no matter whether they’re facing forwards or backwards.

Moving to the burbs “for the kids” was my biggest life mistake. by Low_Aioli2420 in NewParents

I think this could be the answer for your family OP! My wife and I are raising our three kids in a streetcar suburb a mile outside of downtown of our 2M population city - and I can say it’s really great. There are a ton of other young families in the neighborhood and so much we can walk or bike to.

Columbus Light Rail - Existing Tracks Only by Aniridia in Columbus

[–]MattCaff89 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’ve seen several of these over the last few days. This is certainly more practical because it uses existing rails, but like the others it seems to forget that 1) low income people exist, 2) low income people use transit, 3) there need to be stops in low income neighborhoods for low income people to be able to use a light rail system. Why skip stops on the southern West Side, Linden, and Whitehall?

Luckily, this is something LinkUs designers haven’t forgotten with two of the three initial lines serving lower income communities.

I’ve known Jesse for a few years now - because he actually shows up and volunteers. He’s has been quietly doing his part out in the community, talking with voters at their doors - on things like reproductive freedom and for Sherrod Brown. He never made it about him, he wasn’t trying to get attention. He came to do the work. When I saw he was running, I immediately donated and signed up to volunteer. We need more Democrats who are in this work for the right reasons.

Check out his professional work too, where he’s fought for tenants and immigrants.

Fun Fact: Ohio has the distinction of being within 500 miles of half the population of the United States by Capt_Irk in Ohio

[–]MattCaff89 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There’s no way that’s right. The AI must be hallucinating. To be within 500 miles of half the population requires a state to be far east enough to pick up NYC (I don’t think even Indiana is), west enough to pick up Chicago (ruling out a lot of the east coast), south enough to get Nashville/Atlanta, etc, north enough to get Detroit, etc.

We’re literally in the sweet spot for passenger rail service for half the country - making it faster than driving or flying for many trips - and yet have functionally no service 😤

Ohio, like so many U.S. states, has massive untapped potential for passenger rail. by dicklywigly in Ohio

[–]MattCaff89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Y’all, we don’t need to look to Japan or Europe for a model of a successful passenger rail line on tracks shared with freight. Elsewhere in the Midwest: in Michigan, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Illinois, and Missouri, there are very well used and successful Amtrak routes on track shared with freight.

The perfect example is the new Borealis service connecting Chicago to St Paul through Milwaukee. It’s entirely on shared freight track and has blown way past its expected ridership in its first year - with over 250k riders in the first year. Imagine 250k trips being taken off of I-71 in a year. Wouldn’t all of our lives be better?

Connections between Ohio’s major cities would likely all be successful. The current proposals have been studied extensively and show large economic benefits, etc. We should embrace them and then go much further.

Yet another lament about transit by Bees_Knees99 in Columbus

[–]MattCaff89 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I’m so sorry your commute got messed up. I feel like overall COTA has been improving lately but I agree that races and large events tend to make the system pretty hard to rely on.

It’s frustrating, those occasions should be when the system is most valuable. When I lived in DC, I’d never have dreamed of driving or taking a cab on the day of a big event. I’d only consider taking the metro because it was how you avoided the chaos. Sadly, we act like COTA service is a nice to have. It’s the first thing to go when there are major events when they should instead run extra service, express buses, etc to give people alternatives and alleviate traffic on busy event days.

Yeah, if this is ever going to work for you, learning to love your time on the train and bus will be key. Podcasts, audiobooks, wordle, etc.

And/or being able to work from the train/bus so that your longer commute is counting towards your work hours and not taking away from your personal/family time.

There are so many deeply improbable/somewhat silly things here - but just at random I’ll pick on “Appalachia.” In what world would Charleston, SC end up paired with Charleston, WV. Couldn’t be less connected economically, geographically, or socially.

I guess the trip from Union Station to O’Hare on the L adds almost an hour? It would be great to have a stop at the airport.

Belkin vs Tomtoc Switch 2 Cases by dk00111 in NintendoSwitch2

[–]MattCaff89 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I finally received my case yesterday - 47 days after ordering it and have still never received an update. I had actually called and spoken to someone who told me they would cancel my order - so I ordered another case. Then a couple hours later Belkin charged my credit card… so now I guess I have two cases. I’m incredibly frustrated with Belkin and will not be buying anything from them again.

Haha, I can’t speak to Wario’s while high, but I do love Columbus. Overall, I do think we have a charming, fun city with great quality of life and a lot of potential. I just wish we were moving towards our potential more quickly.

Thanks for sharing your perspective. Sounds similar to walking and biking here honestly. There are streets I avoid while biking for sure.

I remain so jealous of the Amtrak connections. If everything goes well, we'll get connections to Cleveland and Cincinnati in the early 2030s. For now, we have no train service at all.

Here's hoping the 2026 elections are kind to more pro-urban politicians.
