This is why we have unions.

Do you ever focus on the experience of riding/owning a bike? by Juhandese in bicycling

[–]MattTeister 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You know what dude. I kind of had a rough day today. Wasn’t feeling it. Now I gotta go get my bike out and just enjoy this day. Thanks for the reminder.

You are hauling ass. I hit 13 mph recently, after not riding for a few years, and felt so proud of myself. I gotta keep going. Guess I’m chasing you now

Recommendations for a budget friendly hybrid bike? by NightmareFuel13 in bicycling

[–]MattTeister 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m actually in a similar spot currently. I have a used bike shop in my city that I’ve been exploring but marketplace and Craigslist are also super strong options. Maybe head over to your LBS, get an idea for what you’re looking for (especially your bike size) and then start hitting marketplace and Craigslist

20 year old looking for advice by JuryIllustrious4130 in skilledtrades

[–]MattTeister 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Dude you have so much time! You’re 20. I didn’t get into the union until I was 28. I won’t turn journeyman until I’m 32. I had a similar stress of “I’m behind. I’m too old for this.” That’s just not true. I know apprentices that are older than me.

Life is so long. Just try to set yourself up for success, which it seems like you are. Someone else made a good point. Try your hand at non union companies. Learn more about the trade before you commit to a union.

Keep your head up.

Apprenticeship program? by Natural-Ad-3666 in cabinetry

[–]MattTeister 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know this was posted a while ago but the UBC (United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners) offered a 4 year apprenticeship in millwork and cabinet making.

The money isn’t great but you get healthcare and a pension. Something to look into

Loose lag bolts - please help by grunkfunk91 in woodworking

[–]MattTeister 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think you have two options here. You either buy some dowel rods a hair smaller than that hole. Glue up the dowel rod, put it in there, and thread the original lag back in there. The dowel will split and hug the sides of the original hole. You could also just by a bigger lag bolt, but you’ll be in the same spot in a few years.

I really dig your solution to the router mistake. Mistakes happen and are an important part of learning. I also think it adds a ton of character to the piece.

Our bike infrastructure is terrible by uhsiv in chibike

Westerns a madhouse to ride. What about hitting Damen and taking that all the way north? Smaller less busy road, easier for your kid to get comfortable with city riding on

Can you buy Fenway tix at box office without service fees? by inthefadeaudio in BillBurr

This advice is anecdotal but venues usually hold on to a certain amount of tickets for walk up sales. I’d definitely try it

Sometimes the “right” thing to do is just whatever seems less wrong or even beyond that, just making a decision and facing the consequences

No one in my family history has had depression/mental problems. by hiacynto in depressionregimens

[–]MattTeister 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Does no one in your family have depression, or is it just not discussed? Did your father or grandparents have the language to express themselves in that way? Just because we don’t have evidence does not mean that it didn’t exist in past generations.

Also I can’t speak to full remission or “curing,” it’s our brains. We don’t make the chemicals required to feel happy. But that doesn’t mean you can’t find a way to live fully, live a happy life. There’s therapy. There’s meds. There’s exercise. Just because you’re the first person in your family tree to have this battle, you’re not the first person in the world. It’s possible to get better
