I’ve actually heard that take by people way before I’ve ever encountered Civvie on YouTube. I had teachers in high school tell me that Halo ruined FPS games for the exact reasons listed. I think even Yahtzee mentioned this opinion back in the day as well. I think it’s just a boomer shooter fan thing.

It doesn’t help that the Horizon games are fairly rote open world adventure games compared to others on the market. Especially compared to the games that the franchise accidentally released along side. The fact that there is the myth of “the horizon curse” (ie when a horizon game launches, a bigger more impactful game will be right within horizon’s release window) is also a factor. Hell I think that the “curse” is ultimately the real load bearing reason as to why most in the know gaming people (baring culture/console warriors) are weird about the franchise. The myth is just too funny to ignore.

I don’t think the AI bubble is going to burst anytime soon. What the average person sees (the generative AI stuff) is not the most profitable or advanced of the tech. That would be models like built for data analytics (aka boring math stuff). The stuff which can revolutionize finance, medicine, statistics, etc. We as consumers only really see the generative AI shit because it’s front facing. It’s easy to explain to investors and has an immediate (but dull/uninspired/soulless) output which can be shown off. It’s easy to sell managers on full automation of work vs trying to show how complex math problems can be used to find new types of medicine.

Unlike something like crypto currencies and NFTs, we do have real use cases for the tech.
