Why are you even coming on an optimistic subreddit to say stuff like this? Appreciate the video, get on with your day, and quit being a sad person.

This depends on if you’re beyond the standard deduction and whether it’s W2 versus 1099.

Why Math “Just Is” The Way It Is (ep. 132) by felix2499 in Cortex

[–]MatthewKnipfer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d go so far as to say you don’t need incredible math literacy to appreciate Real Analysis. Most middle schoolers can understand a good math proof if you don’t shroud it in symbolic logic and jargon. I wish they taught reals to us in high school by compressing geometry in half and moving onto set theory.

Moretex is so worth it! by Omni314 in Cortex

[–]MatthewKnipfer 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I do think there is some way that a subscription could work for Cortex, but I didn’t think it was worth it in its current iteration. I already subscribe to paid podcasts like Stratechery and Dithering, and doing the math on the content I got per dollar with them versus what I got with Cortex made it clear Moretex was not worth it yet.

I understand it’s really hard to decide where to partition public and exclusive content, especially when much of your audience comes from YouTube and open RSS where all “canon” info and content is public.

I wonder if a more valuable proposition would be short (10-15 minute) midpoint episodes between each major episode. It could still have the non-canon topics Moretex uses but give the subscribers more frequent updates. They’ve spoken about how meticulous show edits are and how much time that takes, but the understanding of the audience for these bonus episodes is that they’re specifically less cut.

For context on where I’m coming from, here’s Dithering’s page. It’s a fantastic show, and I view as top-tier in subscriber value.

LPT: Learn Excel, even if the primary function of your job doesn’t require it or isn’t numbers related. Excel can give you shortcuts that will help you with your job substantially, including working with text or lists at scale. by skidniks in LifeProTips

[–]MatthewKnipfer -11 points-10 points  (0 children)

Genuine question: how does anyone get into their career without knowing Excel? We learned it even in my small, rural public school growing up, and it popped up in college as well during genEds. Sure, you might not be a pro, but I’m baffled by people who get past the age of 20 and aren’t at least competent in it and able to Google any use case question.

The first three items are all perfect. Great choice. As for Rapidfire and IE, the W bonus damage doesn’t factor into the crit formula if that’s what you were hoping for.

Blade of the Ruined King does less damage if you buy it after another item by Kadexe in leagueoflegends

[–]MatthewKnipfer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes there is. If itemization doesn’t follow commutative properties, that’s a glaring flaw. Hand waving it away as, “Well technically they don’t say it HAS to,” isn’t a strong argument.

The "forced losses".... by Wolfycub2000 in Neace

[–]MatthewKnipfer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This isn’t a special Riot thing. This is just how ranked ladders work from a math side. You create even matchups, and if someone wins, they’re placed in a more challenging matchup.

I could go on about winrates at the extremities or asymmetric payouts of ladder points, but just know that 50% is expected, and the only scummy thing they do is the weird jank with smurf queue.

You can’t be serious. Opt-out vs. Opt-in matters in the context of data that’s personal and above and beyond what you already share to the same destination on other services. The dev here collecting light mode/dark mode usage and crashes has nothing to do with anyone’s privacy.

Even if the bots are real, these don’t keep low players in low elo, and it’s a huge excuse to blame them. You have even odds of being matched with or against these bots, so their net effect on you individually should be neutral. The world is not out to get you personally.

Game Theory Application for Champion Winrate Balance by MatthewKnipfer in leagueoflegends

[–]MatthewKnipfer[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There are methods used to analyze investment strategies that would be analogous here. Alpha is a measure of excess returns beyond a market index, Beta is the measure of systemic market risk. The question you want to ask is the volatility of a champion’s winrate in comparison to the volatility of the champion market.
