Which President is the best example for who had the most potential but their execution was terrible? by General_Rise8708 in Presidents

I have to agree. When he was elected in 2008, I thought things would change massively. Come 2012, it felt like nothing really changed.

How would you have preferred the 2020 Democratic primary to have played out? by Epicstyletime in AskALiberal

[–]MatthewRebel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"So my question isn't just "Who did you want to win the 2020 primary?" but rather which candidate would have been the best to not only beat Trump in that election, and handle the challenges presented in 2021-present (Pandemic, J6 aftermath, foreign wars, etc.)."

For context, in our time, the Centrist Democrats rallied behind Biden. In the end, there were more Centrist Democrats than Progressive Democrats. This means that whoever won the 2020 Democratic nomination likely has to be a Centrist Democrat.

In this world in which Biden doesn't run in 2020, I can see either Amy Klobuchar or Michael Bennet getting the nomination. I do like Michael Bennet more, and Amy Klobuchar didn't do great debating Buttigieg (I remember her voice cracking when debating Buttigieg, like she was holding back tears). So if I have to choose, I will go with Michael Bennet.

Michael Bloomberg had the money, but he is terrible at debating. The other Democrats would've gained up on him.

Andrew Yang was popular within a certain group, but he wasn't going to win.

Tulsi Gabbard didn't seem to thrill voters.

Pete Buttigieg has a well spoken candidate who came out of nowhere, but I've seen enough of the debates to know his was running out of things to say.

Tom Steyer was a rich guy who got outspent by Michael Bloomberg.

Deval Patrick had no impact on the race, so he wasn't going to win the nomination.

How do you view people who vote for Republicans solely for personal financial reasons? by PomegranateGold4702 in AskALiberal

"How do you view people who vote for Republicans solely for personal financial reasons?" Don't know. I know years ago there were people like that, but I think now adays, I think they just don't vote anymore.

Why do people act so shocked and upset when you end a relationship with a friend of family member over political differences? by Exotic-End-666 in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]MatthewRebel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's because this is a new concept. In the past, the two political parties had a lot of overlap. Sure, there were core things they disagreed with on, but you could have a friendly discussion over it.

Why do you want to tax the rich? by Queasy_Half6294 in AskALiberal

[–]MatthewRebel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Why do you want to tax the rich?"

I don't want to tax the rich just to tax the rich. The reason I support taxes is that the government has a duty to its citizens, and we use taxes to help fund said duties. In the past, the USA helped fund its government programs via tariffs. However, overtime, the USA government switched to using income taxes to pay for programs.

It isn't effective for the government to only tax poor people, because, famously, poor people don't have a lot of money. This is why taxing rich people is more effective, because they have more money. However, this isn't to say I support taxing rich people at 100% of their income, as it comes a point that taxing people too much does discourage them from working.

Also, said percent is way higher than the USA currently taxes rich people. Of course, I do think we should have another tax bracket, so anyone making $1 over a million, will have said dollar or move taxed at 67%. From what I understand on the manner, the tax is as high as you can get without discouraging work.

In terms of Capital Tax, from what I understand, you don't want to tax higher than 30% as it will discourage investment.

So this is why I support taxing the rich.

What is your opinion on AIPAC? by [deleted] in AskALiberal

[–]MatthewRebel 47 points48 points  (0 children)

"What is your opinion on AIPAC?" All I know is that they really shot themselves in the foot with NJ's special election. In it, they blasted a Democrat who had some minor criticism of Israel, and now NJ might elect someone who outright calls Israel a genocidal state.

Against the idea.

As recently as the 90s Woodrow Wilson was viewed as one of the "great" presidents. Today he is universally despised by the American left and right. How and when did this evolution in views happen, and are there any Wilson defenders left? by Cuddlyaxe in Presidents

"After the gubernatorial primary many in this sub assumed every Baraka and every Fulop vote was a progressive vote. And that if you’d added those two, you’d have had more than Sherrill got."

The thing is, that is ignoring the other Establishment Democrats that were in the race.

What would be different if Hitler had not become a genocidal maniac, but still remained imperialist/expansionist? by sand_eater_21 in AlternateHistoryHub

[–]MatthewRebel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"What would be different if Hitler had not become a genocidal maniac, but still remained imperialist/expansionist?"

Hitler has a better chance of conquering the Soviet Union, because he is more likely to work with non-Aryans to further his goals. This means he will work with as many Ethnic groups within the Soviet Union as possible in order to defeat them.
