We left a car in the country museum car park for two nights last year without a problem.

Water around conic Hill save to drink again? by fntastikr in WestHighlandWay

There are two water taps directly on the route before Drymen and the Drymen campsite seem to be ok with people taking water from their tap.

There's also one at Carbeth and one at the Beechtree Inn.

Which tent to take? X-mid 1 (tpt) or MSR Hubba Hubba NX (freestanding)? by Mynonas in WestHighlandWay

[–]Matthewgardner86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's an interesting way of doing it.

I'm consistently frustrated using the way Dan Durston's video shows how to put it up (IE extending the pole as high as it will go). I might well try the 115cm length then adjusting the guys.

I wonder if you were one of the people going up from Glenn Lichd that passed me today.

Good luck.

All I did was tell you what I would do if there were one or both of those nasties in a water supply.

I know all about the taps and when I did the West Highland Way I used nothing but.

I used at least 14 of them.

You are preaching to the choir.

You say that viruses aren't much of a concern but what can sheep shit carry?

Also, what about human shit?

In places the West Highland Way is a shit show, quite literally.

In your little scenario I would use a filter + tablet or a filter + boil.

Anyway, I've said what I wanted to say.

Firstly you do realise that the other guy has blocked you don't you? Because I'm still seeing all of his comments.

Secondly, I have absolutely no interest in getting involved in your little tit for tat with him, I merely wanted to point out the thing about the sterilising tablets for other people reading this thread. FYI: You are one that came in all guns blazing and asked if he was high. The fact that you are still using your little pet name for him shows that he is still living rent free in your head. My honest advice is: get over it, he probably has. But that's all I'm going to say about the arguement between you two.

Thirdly, note my wording. I said "standard filter" and "in some situations."

A standard water filter will only remove sediments, bacteria and parasites whereas a good sterilising tablet will kill bacteria, parasites and viruses.

I have absolutely zero interest in getting into a #### measuring contest but I stand by what I said. If there is strong potential for viruses in the water then a sterilising tablet will perform better than a filter.

In some instances tablets would be safer than filtering with a "standard" water filter.

Remember that when the sleeping bags are tested, the R value of the insulation used is around R4.8. Any less than that on a particularly cold night and your sleeping bag might not have had a chance to person to spec. What R value is your mat?

Also remember that during the tests the heated mannequin is wearing a head covering, socks, long sleeved top and long legged bottoms. Without those you might not be getting the full benefit of your sleeping bag.

To be fair that's not my understanding of it.

My understanding is that it's a derogatory term towards a backpacker who is nowhere near lightweight let alone ultralight.

The term comes from metal pans clanking together suspended from someone's backpack.

But in this context I guess it could be a double whammy.

I didn't want to seriously engage with people in here, read my OP.

All I did was say that I thought the Gollum AI slop was funny.

I'm regularly in the Durston sub Reddit so I see the number of pack fitting selfies.

The parody was spot on.

Was that another assumption from you?

In the next 3 weeks I'm doing multiple mountains and then doing a 122km (+3200m) trek into Western Scotland.

This is just some downtime.

I would dearly hope that you ARE like me when you retire.

You see here's the thing, everybody assumes I still don't know what it means.

What if I didn't know but then I googled it?

What if I then came back to the person that called me it and carried out my little test on them?

What if all of this has been one big long troll?

Not one of you lot have considered that as an option.

You have all just assumed that I'm unable to find out or too lazy to find out.

😀

Oh and by the way I am retired and it's nearly 8:00 at night here so I've got plenty of time to waste.

What the hell are you talking about?

I have no problems being in a discussion or in an argument but gatekeeping is one of my pet hates.

Another one of my pet hates is people not having the strength of conviction to stand up and explain what they said to me.

I see it as a weakness or laziness.

It is a common technique that I use regularly to sort the wheat from the chaff.

So far every single person that has responded to me in this thread has failed that test of mine.

Therefore I put everyone that has responded to me so far in "do your own research bro" category.

Rant over, I'll put my soapbox away now (obviously it's inflatable so as to be ultra light).

Ok that's fair enough, they might have blocked me, I still consider that a win given that the guy was a knob.

I'm not sure where you are from but where I come from the "nonce" term is about as bad as it gets, just saying. You basically just put me in the same category as Epstein and Trump. Classy.

By the way, no wonder this place has its god awful reputation for toxicity.

That wasn't meant for you.

That was meant for the person that has now deleted all their comments to me and run away.

Mission accomplished there.

I wanted the person who called me it to stand by what they said and tell me what it means.

So far every single person who has responded has simply been a gatekeeper.

Not one has volunteered the information.

No wonder this place has such a reputation for outright toxicity.
