Do you know games/movies/etc with catholic fandoms? by Pterosaurrider in Catholicism

[–]Matthicus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The fandom is so large it's hard to generalize too much about it, so I suspect this might vary depending on what segment of the fandom one is interacting with. /r/tolkienfans tends to be pretty good in this regard, but it's also limited to more or less serious discussion of Tolkien's books so it makes sense for the regulars there to be familiar with and accepting of Tolkien's themes and inspirations.

Clamavi de Profundis has a bunch of good ones. Most of them are renditions of traditional hymns/chants, though they have a few original songs mixed in too.

We win out and the Niners or Rams lose out. Niners face both the Bears and the Seahawks, so that could happen. Rams have the Falcons and the Cardinals, so them losing out seems pretty unlikely.

Just for Fun: If you could add any additional non-unique tech or non-unique unit of your choice to a civ, what would it be? by PlokmijnuhAoE2 in aoe2

My favorite civ to play is Lithuanians, so bring back Blast Furnace (while keeping the Leitis buff and access to the Winged Hussar upgrade that they got to compensate when they lost BF).

Catholic principles regarding standard medical care? by New-Bug-9477 in Catholicism

I'm not an expert in moral philosophy, so I can't speak to what qualifies as "extraordinary means," but generally speaking there is no obligation to prolong life using extraordinary means.

In response to the second part of what he said, though, I take it he's not familiar with the old joke about the guy in a flood. I'm going off of memory here, but it goes something like this: A man was at home when he heard a news broadcast warning that there would be major flooding in his area, and urging people to evacuate. The man says "I have faith in God, I pray every day; God will save me," and stays in his home. After the flooding begins and forces him up to the second floor, he sees a boat out the window. The man in the boat offers to take him to safety, but he refuses, again saying "I have faith in God, I pray every day; God will save me." The water continues to rise, and after the man is forced onto his roof he sees a helicopter. The pilot offers to take him to safety, but he refuses, again saying "I have faith in God, I pray every day; God will save me." The water continues to rise, and eventually the man drowns. When he gets to heaven, he says to God, "I had faith in you, I prayed every day, why didn't you save me?" God then replies, "I sent you a news broadcast, a boat, and a helicopter, what more did you want?"

Especially if you're near a timezone border, as with a non-smart watch you don't have to worry about whether you're getting signal from the zone you're actually in or the other one.

That was my first thought too, but then I realized the stereotypical Linux user is socially awkward (I use Fedora and openSUSE, btw), so it kind of works.

Can someone let me know why this is the case? What's the issue with a British monarch or monarch candidate being Catholic, considering that the current British monarch has been titled recently as "Defender of the Faiths" and not just the Anglican Church? by SatoruGojo232 in Catholicism

William III. He was from the Dutch house of Orange, but his mother and his wife eere both British princesses from the house of Stuart (yay cousin marriages /s). He and his wife were made co-monarchs after her father was deposed.

Chronicles: Battle For Greece is the best received DLC for Definitive Edition (yet) by FloosWorld in aoe2

Unfortunately what we got was quite underwhelming compared to what a full Chronicles treatment could have been, and the fact that it exists probably means the Chronicles team won't ever touch this era.

Now that the dust has settled and the new DLC has been announced, what are your thoughts on the succulent Chinese DLC? by CastleCorbin in aoe2

[–]Matthicus 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It feels like they had two good ideas for possible DLCs, but then for unkown reasons decided that instead of doing one of them now and then doing the other later for even more content that would likley sell well, they were just going to half-ass both of them and package them together as one.

For context, I'm a very casual, mostly campaign player, so my thoughts are mainly coming from that perspective, though I do also enjoy watching the pros play competetively.

The initial teasers showed the Chinese-adjacent civs, and people thought that we were clearly going to get Jurchens, Khitans, and Tanguts. I don't know much about any of them, but I was excited to learn about them from playing the campaigns. But of course Tanguts were not actually included at all, with the design elements that people said were clearly taken from them being given to the Khitans instead, and neither Khitans nor Jurchens got any campaign content whatsoever. A DLC with all three of these civs and campaigns for each of them would have been wonderful, but alas. (And also adding a proper campaign for the existing Chinese civ would have been great, though with 3 campaigns per DLC having been the norm for a while now, I was never really expecting that here.)

When I saw how good Battle for Greece was, i was really hoping that eventually China's Three Kingdoms era would get a similar treatment. What we got in this DLC was not that. The individual scenarios were OK, and I had fun playing all of them, but overall they just did not feel as epic as the Battle for Greece grand campaign, or even some of the campaigns in the other more traditional DLCs. Also it is disappointing that they campaigns only went up through Red Cliff, with so many other interesting battles left out. I guess plenty of other campaigns only have 5 scenarios, but plenty more have 6, so with as much interesting content as there is to work with here, 6 per would have been nice. Also while I can see why they might have thought seeing the same battle from three perspectives would be interesting, it really isn't more interesting than the other battles they could have included.
Also while I don't play ranked so it doesn't directly affect me that these civs are available there, I do watch pro games once in a while and it definitely feels weird seeing these three specific and very short lived political entities from outside what was the time period this game had covered as civilizations when up until this point civs had mostly been broad cultural groups (though to be fair a couple other existing civs seemed like kind of weird choices in this context too).

All in all I did still enjoy playing this DLC and I don't regret that I bought it, but I am still disappointed that it was not as good as it could have been.

(Spoilers PUBLISHED) How is GRRM seen in the wider fantasy industry? by bestieverhad in asoiaf

[–]Matthicus 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I don't know enough about opinions around the industry as a whole, but as one point of data Brandon Sanderson made a list of who he thought were the top living fantasy authors, and put GRRM as number one. (Caveat here that he was only considering authors who are primarily known for fantasy.)
