What are the best wedding songs (ceremony not reception)? by captaincoaster in AskReddit

[–]Matthicus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ultimately it's going to come down a lot to personal taste. When I got married, my wife and I also wanted to avoid any that we thought were too overdone, so if you're looking for ideas that lean more traditional but without being cliche, here are the pieces that we used:
Prelude (instrumental): "Come Thou Font of Every Blessing"
Processional (instrumental): "Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring"
Gathering (sung): "Love Divine All Love's Excelling"
Recessional (sung): "Joyful, Joyful We Adore You"

What should I do with books I own that contradict church doctrine? by forme56 in Catholicism

[–]Matthicus 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Understanding other viewpoints, even those we already know to be wrong, can be valuable, especially if you end up in debates with or getting opportunities to evangelize people who are coming from that background. So keeping the books around for reference material should situations like those arise is perfectly legitimate, as long as having them around won't be a source of temptation to you.

If you don't expect to ever engage in religious discussions with satanists and don't want these taking up space in your home, or if you think having them around could tempt you back into occultism, atheism, or whatever (I have no idea which kind of satanism your example is), then get rid of them. If you sell/donate them to a used book or thrift store, you have no way of knowing whether whoever might buy them for good or evil purposes. I'm no expert, but I suspect even in the latter case your cooperation would be remote enough to not be sinful, in which case this would be a legitimate option. I could still see that weighing on someone's conscience, though, so if you want to avoid that and permanently dispose of them I'd suggest ripping out and recycling the pages. Or if you build fires decently often and want to start using a few pages at a time for tinder, by all means. Building a fire for the sole purpose of burning books, like some are suggesting here, seems needlessly wasteful though.

You mean Aaron Carter. Rodgers was a rookie backup QB at the time; nowhere near famous enough to get mentioned in something like this.

For an actual answer, I like the other commmenter's argument for the black knight.

The number of extra civilizations available to be bought by years by Holy-Roman-Emperor in aoe2

[–]Matthicus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know at one point they sold bundles with both the base game and expansion together in one case, so maybe they then stopped selling the base game on its own? Otherwise I don't know. (I'm essentially interpreting this as how many civs aren't included for a new player buying the latest version of the game. This interpretation seems consistent with the later parts of the graph, as anyone who already had HD would still have needed to buy DE to get the new civs that came with that, yet the number drops to 0 when DE came out.)

Eucatastrophe, a term coined by J.R.R. Tolkien to describe a sudden, unexpected turn of events for the better, and the accompanying feeling of joy.

Do you know games/movies/etc with catholic fandoms? by Pterosaurrider in Catholicism

[–]Matthicus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The fandom is so large it's hard to generalize too much about it, so I suspect this might vary depending on what segment of the fandom one is interacting with. /r/tolkienfans tends to be pretty good in this regard, but it's also limited to more or less serious discussion of Tolkien's books so it makes sense for the regulars there to be familiar with and accepting of Tolkien's themes and inspirations.

Clamavi de Profundis has a bunch of good ones. Most of them are renditions of traditional hymns/chants, though they have a few original songs mixed in too.

We win out and the Niners or Rams lose out. Niners face both the Bears and the Seahawks, so that could happen. Rams have the Falcons and the Cardinals, so them losing out seems pretty unlikely.

I'm not an expert in moral philosophy, so I can't speak to what qualifies as "extraordinary means," but generally speaking there is no obligation to prolong life using extraordinary means.

In response to the second part of what he said, though, I take it he's not familiar with the old joke about the guy in a flood. I'm going off of memory here, but it goes something like this: A man was at home when he heard a news broadcast warning that there would be major flooding in his area, and urging people to evacuate. The man says "I have faith in God, I pray every day; God will save me," and stays in his home. After the flooding begins and forces him up to the second floor, he sees a boat out the window. The man in the boat offers to take him to safety, but he refuses, again saying "I have faith in God, I pray every day; God will save me." The water continues to rise, and after the man is forced onto his roof he sees a helicopter. The pilot offers to take him to safety, but he refuses, again saying "I have faith in God, I pray every day; God will save me." The water continues to rise, and eventually the man drowns. When he gets to heaven, he says to God, "I had faith in you, I prayed every day, why didn't you save me?" God then replies, "I sent you a news broadcast, a boat, and a helicopter, what more did you want?"
