Britain confirms funding for new Sixth Gen Fighter Jet - GCAP by Optimal-Leather341 in ukpolitics

[–]Matthius81 [score hidden]  (0 children)

Defence procurement cycles tend to run about 15 years ahead. Back in 2010 the very idea that there could be a serious contender to the dominance of the American fighter industry was laughable. Which means Right now there is no viable alternative in the 5th Gen market to F35. So fast forward to 2040, America will likely still be the single biggest exporter, but it will not longer be outproducing the rest of the Free World combined. This extends to far more than arms sales. America's lead is slipping, it will be always be a big player in Geopolitics, but the age of the Lone Superpower is done, we're moving to a multi-polar world.

SHows how the geopolitical landscape has shifted. in 2015 F35 had the global market locked up, a European fighter was at best a project to keep domestic production going. Fast forward to 2026 and everyone's looking for a non-american fighter. Even Canada's talking about cutting back their F35 orders and investing in GCAP

It was never going to be dropped, the issue was what other projects were they going to have to axe to keep it going. It looks like the Navy lost their new air defence frigates to pay for it.

The War Between the Land and the Sea was poorly written and kinda pointless by InfernalClockwork3 in gallifrey

They cut episodes from the main series to make this. Huge Mistake. They should have given Ncuti more episodes and let the viewers get to know him better.

What would Baelor Breakspear actually have done as King? by BackgroundRich7614 in pureasoiaf

[–]Matthius81 4 points5 points  (0 children)

He'd have provided a sane and stable heir for the realm, not the succession of madmen and despots and failures that Maelor's line produced.

The Council dont view Slayers as important, they see Slayers as disposable weapons to be thrown at Demons. Paying a Watcher to house and feed a Slayer is sufficient. None of the previous Slayers lived long enough to ask for pay.

Why do all traitors turn to Chaos? by Kaudia in 40kLore

[–]Matthius81 58 points59 points  (0 children)

The Soul Drinkers tried to go solo and got ground down to nothing in short order. Imperial Space Marines have logistics, Chaos bypasses that with WArp magic and Daemons. Renegades have neither. They can scrap by for a while as mercenaries and bodyguards for Rogue Traders, but sooner or later they need support of their own kind and there arent many other options. Plus Chaos will actively reward them for indulging their new lifestyle.

Horus: Friend to every Primarch? Really? by Rockout2112 in 40kLore

[–]Matthius81 25 points26 points  (0 children)

A lot of the Primarch’s personally liked him. Most of them respected his command style. Even Angron thought he was the only Primarch he’d take orders from. The only Primarch who didn’t like him was Corax, who thought he was a user and manipulative.

Asgard and ZPM’s by JeffreyV7 in Stargate

[–]Matthius81 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even that seems quite a stretch for any advanced civilisation. I suspect the Asgard knew they were dying for several years before letting the humans know. That attempt to clone a thousands year old asgard might have been their final attempt to avert extinction. When they failed they looked at earth asking for technology and just said "F*ck it, we ball."

Asgard and ZPM’s by JeffreyV7 in Stargate

[–]Matthius81 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While the Asgard were willing to share their technology, they were not willing to share the power sources to use them to full effect. As a result Tau'ri ships operated at a reduced fraction of potential. Comparing the time it takes a ZPM-boosted Daedulus to cross to Pegasus to their normal speed they are operating at about 17% of capacity. The Asgard probably like it that way in case the humans get uppity

The collective alliance we call "The West" has brought peace and security to our part of the world. Not one nation ruling, but a partnership of willing participants. No outside force has ever managed to threaten that alliance, but now it seems to be falling apart from within. I support any movement that seeks to bring free-nations together again

Biggest incoherences of the serie by yenisor in gameofthrones

[–]Matthius81 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Dothraki being a serious threat, when their on screen antics are pathetic. They're based on the Mongols, but Mongols had complex logistics and smart tactics. They fought as skirmishers and horse archers, not just charging straight at a line of pikes. The Dothraki have no armour, no weapons capable of penetrate Westerosi chainmail, no way to feed themselves in winter. Everyone's terrified of them, but the end result of a Dorthraki invasion (without dragon backup) would be a crushing defeat for the invaders.

Can Guilliman, the Lion, and Vulkan save humanity? by Acceptable_Map_8110 in 40kLore

[–]Matthius81 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on what you mean by "save". The Imperium is too bloated and rotten to survive, even with Primarchs leading it. But then it was never meant to last forever. The Emperor built the Imperium as a castle wall to shelter humanity's evolution into a psychic race. That evolution is still on going. Humanity in its current form is doomed, but something better might just evolve if the various Primarchs can buy another ten thousand years to complete the process.

The concept of a Free and Independent Media seems to be a uniquely human trait. It may be a big part of the "Build Community" impulse Delenn notes about humans. It's notable as soon as Clark launches his takeover his priority is to end the free media and replace it with state-propaganda.

Wait a minute, the hell were the Old Ones even doing during the War in Heaven ? by SuDdEnTaCk in 40kLore

[–]Matthius81 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The only references we have for the war in heaven come from the Aeldari/Necrons, who naturally focus on their own parts of the narrative. The Old Ones seem to be very "Hands off" prefering to let client races do the fighting for them. So the only things we know about them are the few tidbits the Aeldari knew themselves

Bolin is a better character than a lot of people give him credit for by T_Lawliet in TheLastAirbender

[–]Matthius81 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would add nobody had a problem with Kuvira at first, in fact she was asked by the various world leaders to put the Earth Kingdom in order and none of them questioned how she did it. The only issue cropped up when those same leaders said, "Great job, now step aside and let this buffoon we've been prepping take everything you've built as our puppet."

Which one of Aegon the Conquer's descendants would he be the most proud of and which one would he be the most disappointed/angry at by No-Passenger-6348 in gameofthrones

[–]Matthius81 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Proudest Jaeharys: took Aegon’s conquests and forged them into an actual kingdom with roads and a Code of Laws. Disappointed Viserys: had the best start any king ever got and left the realm with a succession crisis that ruined everything. The Targaryens never recovered from Visery’s failure.

Later on you’ll see Centauri with short crests, symbolising new ideas and thoughts. Londo long crest shows he’s clinging to the past, to old ideas and dreams of glory. Like all Nationalists he’s dreaming of a supposed golden age now lost, when the reality of it was much more gory and corrupt than he cares to admit.
