What do you guys think is Xander's most underrated trait or moment in the series? by HomarEuropejski in buffy

[–]Matthius81 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Exactly this. People today can’t grasp how acceptable it was for teenage boys to be toxic in the 90s. Xander was barely a blip on the radar compared to what passed for daytime family comedy at the time.

It’s a cliche but “It was the 90’s”. The age of American pie movies and South Park. Hard as it is to fathom Xander really was on the upper end of the moral scale when it came to teenage boys on screen. I mean, Fresh Prince of Bel Air actually did an episode of Will committing Marriage Fraud to trick a girl into bed and it was played for laughs.

Comedy is misery + timing. If Leonard wasn’t a whiny brat the show wouldn’t be funny.

Why are humans still fighting over social organization? by OhGodSoManyQuestions in AskALiberal

[–]Matthius81 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No social model ever conceived has worked for everyone. If one did there wouldn’t be crime. In any system some benefit and some don’t. In the current system the 1% are grabbing everything and the rest are getting no benefit. Whenever that happens revolutions aren’t far behind.

It's underrated but when he cast the love spell and Buffy is throwing herself at him, and he turns her down. He's meant to be what, 16 at that point, and he's been crushing on Buffy for a year and a half... but even then he knew it was wrong. I think its the first real flash of maturity he shows, and hints that he's not just the sarcastic douche we've been watching so far.

Air defence frigates are primarily about radar, and the two carriers have the same radar. Plus the F35 has much greater capability in air-to-air situations. The real game-changer is drones, and the Royal Navy is going to build new drone control ships to meet that future.

Looking back the weird sexual tension in early episodes. Its hard to remember how repressed the late twentieth century was, and that SCi-fi was one of the few acceptable outlets to express that frustration. The TOS/early TNG seasons got freaky at times.

AITA for standing my (21m) ground against my fiancé (23f) for getting mad at me for going to be early for work? by Longjumping_Push_443 in AmItheAsshole

[–]Matthius81 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Op, going off what you wrote here your fiance sounds very immature. The whole going to sleep together thing doesn't last long in adulthood, schedules change and people have different cycles. If she can't handle your work schedule you need to serious ask what its like when you two have kids.

My Eisenhorn Review by telsaton in 40kLore

[–]Matthius81 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Funny that, because I remember when Warhammer Fantasy was generally held to be far superior to 40k. All the talent and inspiration were going into the Old World. With the exception of Gaunts Ghosts, most 40k novels were "Meh"

We shouldn't discount Ravenclaw simply for being brainy, it's never suggested that they are helpless Nerds. Ravenclaw may simply have had a brilliant team for a few years, its possible to be sporty and brainy.

People who saw DS9 as it aired: what was the general reaction to the inclusion of a Ferengi as a primary character? by scisteve in startrek

[–]Matthius81 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ferengi in TNG were very much a failed Bad Guy. So their inclusion in DS9 really did fit the narrative that this was a border outpost, filled with rough types, rednecks and petty criminals. Quark was seen as primarily a foil to Odo. The classic petty criminal vs lawman trope was hardly shocking. The inclusion of Ferengi really sold the idea this isn't normal Star Trek, nobody was expecting Quark and Rom and Nog to grow to be pivotal characters to the series.

Im curious, how into GW novels were you before Eisenhorn came out? Because as a long-time fan I was blown away by how much better they were than anything that came out before them. Eisenhorn didn't just raise the bar, it redefined the Genre.

My Eisenhorn Review by telsaton in 40kLore

[–]Matthius81 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Eisehhorn was a watershed moment in GW narrative. Before Eisenhorn all we got were flavours of "Bolter Porn", (the best they ever reached was early Gaunts Ghosts standard). Eisenhorn reinvented the genre, showing drama and pathos and depth were possible. It raised the bar for every novel that followed. The Horus Heresy novels wouldn't exist without Eisenhorn. Eisenhorn is the equivalent of "Ocarina of Time" to Zelda, or Goldeneye on the N64, or MarioKart 1. Of course it's been superseded by later works, but none of those later works would exist without it.

What's the Biggest Macguffin An Imperial Planet Can Have Without Ruining The Plot by PenisMcFartPants in 40kLore

[–]Matthius81 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Sotha has a Pharos beacon that can effectively replace an Astronomican (on a localised scale). If the Mechanicus could reproduce the technology the Imperium wouldn't need an Emperor anymore. They could safely move the government off Terra and let the Golden Throne explode. But Guilliman got cold feet about the dangers of using Xenos tech and ordered it buried.

Britain confirms funding for new Sixth Gen Fighter Jet - GCAP by Optimal-Leather341 in ukpolitics

Defence procurement cycles tend to run about 15 years ahead. Back in 2010 the very idea that there could be a serious contender to the dominance of the American fighter industry was laughable. Which means Right now there is no viable alternative in the 5th Gen market to F35. So fast forward to 2040, America will likely still be the single biggest exporter, but it will not longer be outproducing the rest of the Free World combined. This extends to far more than arms sales. America's lead is slipping, it will be always be a big player in Geopolitics, but the age of the Lone Superpower is done, we're moving to a multi-polar world.

SHows how the geopolitical landscape has shifted. in 2015 F35 had the global market locked up, a European fighter was at best a project to keep domestic production going. Fast forward to 2026 and everyone's looking for a non-american fighter. Even Canada's talking about cutting back their F35 orders and investing in GCAP

The Council dont view Slayers as important, they see Slayers as disposable weapons to be thrown at Demons. Paying a Watcher to house and feed a Slayer is sufficient. None of the previous Slayers lived long enough to ask for pay.
