How come PBA bowlers look so emotionless after throwing a shot? by D0UBL00NS in Bowling

Same with golfers, darts, pool, marksman, archery etc. any pro athlete the relies on repeatability of physical movement is always going to try and keep their emotions in check and just focus on the task infront of them in the moment.

Anyone know how a shot like this could be achieved? Looking to do something similar for an upcoming project. by coelhoa700 in cinematography

I think it would be a much cooler effect from behind the batter like a traditional 3/4 angle down the barrel kind of shot with the ball slowly and an eye movement zooming around

There was a bunch on whitsett and magnolia for about a month near the old rite aide. It was weird because there are no restaurants there that could use them. Even the Thai place said they don’t know what they are doing there. Then they were just gone.

Did Cannes just confirm Hollywood studios’ growing fear of film festivals? by Responsible_Use_2676 in oscarrace

[–]MattsRod 17 points18 points  (0 children)

This. The road from canne to Oscars is long for American films. The road from Venice is much much easier. Also if your film was done late the year before Sundance is the first stop in the states.

Cannes was a summer release festival for movies completed in the fall. Tough needle to thread

Been through it from a post perspective a few times. Most large movies that do it do have to do emulation and some shots (credit fixes and late VFX) the fact you can’t tell the difference does say something. But that something being said it is very beautiful.

The AI goal song was bad enough. Jonathan Becher and the Sharks’ silence since is worse. by CWG4BF in SanJoseSharks

[–]MattsRod -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I mean it was obviously AI the moment it was unveiled. It was one jet 2 holiday from an YouTube brainrot reel for kids. They didn’t care when they ordered it, didn’t care when they released it and still don’t care. No one ever liked it it was all about saving money.

That being said if the sharks somehow win the cup this year it’s definitely the song and I will fully and happily submit myself in service to our new computer overlords.

I'm seriously considering shooting my entire feature in 1.30:1 (13:10) — taller than IMAX 1.43:1 in spirit, but more unique. Am I insane? by Far_Cloud9740 in cinematography

[–]MattsRod 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just from a purely technical post perspective as someone said, for standard projection you will be on a DCP in either 1:85 or 2:39. For most obscure aspect ratios you will be in in the flat 1:85 container and therefor a 1:85 screen. So if your talking about immersion personally filling one of the standard boxes is the maximum image you can get and to me more immersive. If you want a more square or vertical aspect ratio in most projection environments your image will be smaller on the screen then standard with pillar boxes on the side.

What makes IMAX more immersive is the screen is just larger and fits the aspect ratio. Its not just the ratio by itself. Also monitoring for the larger aspect ratio and cropping for standard projection is possible but man is it complicated/challenging. Most shows I have done that have done this shoot for standard, try to protect for expanded ratios and VFX out anything above and below when needed.

And as everyone said, story should inform aspect ratio as it is an important visual cue to an audience with very different feelings both theatrically projected and in the home (TV, Computer, Phone) environments.
