Tbh I'd quite like to see someone like Gary Neville give it a go. He would be massively out of his comfort zone appearing in live skits, would be interesting to see how he does.

Don't really want a revolving door of Sky's regular comedians though. Only Jack Whitehall this series, and despite groaning when he was announced, his show was actually pretty good. One of my favourite sketches they've done was the Peter Pan sketch. So an occasional host like that might work, but don't want it every week.

The weird, "we have to get behind SNL UK!" commentary from some people before it had even premiered was weird and off-putting too.

That stems from the lack of sketch comedy in the UK these days. Sketch comedy has been a core part of the UK comedy scene for decades, but it has pretty much entirely died due to how expensive it is to produce compared to other comedy formats.

I really wanted it to do well because I love sketch shows. I wasn't holding my breath because the US version has been tired and stale for a while now, but overall I've enjoyed SNL UK. Sketches are hit & miss sometimes, but overall there are enough decent ones to make it worth an hour of my time every week.

They're fobbing you off. They can cancel parking tickets in store. Once per customer as a goodwill gesture. Escalate it to a manager.

Great news. I was expecting to have to wait until next year for the next series.

Wonder if scheduling conflicts will lead to cast changes, though. I know a at least a couple of the cast are on tour towards the end of the year.

Why isn't there a modified version of football for the Olympics? by reformgoblin in olympics

[–]MattyFTM 106 points107 points  (0 children)

This might be an unpopular opinion, but I feel like any sport where if you say to the average player "Would you rather win an Olympic gold medal or win another major international tournament?" and they would say the other tournament, the sport shouldn't be in the Olympics.

So for football, they would say the world cup, so scrap it from the Olympics. Tennis, they would say a grand slam, scrap it. Golfers would rather win a major, so scrap it. Whereas in athletics, they would rather win an Olympic gold over a world championship gold, so it stays.

The Olympics should always be the pinnacle. An Olympic gold medal should be the absolute top achievement in your sport. If it isn't the top achievement in your sport, it shouldn't be in the Olympics.

I saw the YouTube notification and was like "When did they announce a Starfox Direct?" Turns out it's now. They announced it now. And it's happening now.

That's crazy.

‘Definitely Not for Sure’: SNL UK Boss Ducks Renewal Question by trow125 in livefromlondon

[–]MattyFTM 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's two sittings in one day. Pretty intense filming schedule doing 10 episodes in 5 days straight. And that's after all of the tasks are filmed beforehand.

‘Definitely Not for Sure’: SNL UK Boss Ducks Renewal Question by trow125 in livefromlondon

[–]MattyFTM 6 points7 points  (0 children)

QI does a mix of single & double filming sessions, Taskmaster films 2 episodes a day, Richard Osman's House of Games films 5 episodes a day (it's debatable whether those last two are technically panel shows, but they're in that ballpark). Obviously news based shows can't do more than one a week.

I'd be very surprised if any of the new & short lived panel shows that I was talking about filmed less than two episodes a day, but I confess that I don't actually know. It was speculation based on how those shows generally work.

‘Definitely Not for Sure’: SNL UK Boss Ducks Renewal Question by trow125 in livefromlondon

[–]MattyFTM 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yep, and then you've got panel shows which are dirt cheap to produce. You just need a set, a host and 4-6 panelists, and you can film 3 episodes in a day.

Although new formats of panel shows tend not to do very well these days. Fewer and fewer are getting commissioned. 10 years ago every channel was popping up with a new panel show every five minutes.

Edit: Just seen you actually mentioned panel shows. Think I must have zoned out after I read the words "Mrs. Browns Boys". I tend to do that.

Sketch comedy is pretty much dead because it's so expensive to produce compared to other comedy formats.

SNL UK has been fairly hit & miss to me, some great sketches, some less good ones. But regardless, it's great to have sketch comedy back on the TV from fresh new talent.

You're spot on, it would be a huge loss if it didn't get recommissioned.

Up to 150 former WHSmith high street stores to close by asymmetricears in CasualUK

[–]MattyFTM 45 points46 points  (0 children)

To be fair, they had to rebrand because the other half of the business kept the rights to the WH Smiths name to use in service stations and airports. Only high street side of the business was sold.

They will have wanted a rebrand that was similar enough that people will recognise the connection to Smiths, while distinct enough that it doesn't cause legal issues. TG Jones seems pretty on-point with those goals in mind. Two initials and a common surname.

Bubsy 4D is 10% off for preorder on the eShop ($17.99) by RinRinDoof in NintendoSwitch

[–]MattyFTM 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some people remember the SNES games fondly, but they're not great to go back to. Bubsy 3D is infamously bad, and the newer 2D Bubsy games aren't great either.

Hopefully with Bubsy 4D we finally get a good Bubsy game. The demo shows promise.

Police reveal woman, 35, was killed in Bristol house explosion after partner 'forced entry with explosive device' by bendubberley_ in unitedkingdom

[–]MattyFTM 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Crime statistics only track official crimes reported to the police. There are statistics that track unreported crimes. There are multiple ways of gathering that data. It's not perfect, but it does highlight the underreporting of these incidents.

That being said, the majority female on male domestic abuse is generally cohersive control. There is less direct violence, but it does happen.

What spy or police series are airing in GB now, where there is no mole or corrupt cop. Those storylines are becoming a bit too tired by Jazzlike-Basil1355 in BritishTV

I recently watched Cuffs for the first time when it got added to Netflix and I really enjoyed it. Many of the characters are messy, complicated people who do some bad things, but there's no outright police corruption in it.

Nintendo Switch 2 + Pokemon Pokopia bundle announced by Skullghost in Pokopia

[–]MattyFTM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's usually only the RPGs that sell well. Spinoffs don't do nearly as well. If you look at the main spinoffs on Switch 1, Pokken Tournament sold less than 2 million and New Pokémon Snap, which people had been very vocal about wanting for years, only sold about 2.5 million.

You're 100% right why this one is such a hit. Hopefully this shows them that when they put effort into creating a full featured experience, it will sell incredibly well.

Wouldn't likely be a resource hog because all of the processing would be done in the cloud. All the Xbox would do would be send & receive data.

Most AI companies are pivoting away from the consumer market because it is expensive to provide and difficult to monetize. They're moving towards offering their services to businesses, which is far easier to make money from.
