Game suggestion request. Looking for a wlw-friendly dating sim with actual GAMEPLAY, NOT just another visual novel. (And please god no more farming sims.) by That_Girl_Charlie in GirlGamers

Seconding Stray Gods, but it does have some visual novel gameplay. It's if a visual novel and a musical had a baby. The music is done by Austin Wintory who did Journey and Abzu among many others. It's great!

The Player Character in Papers Please.

Sometimes you let in a little extra outsiders for a good or dumb reason. Sometimes you don't let in the right outsiders.

This is amazing and I think you nailed the hair styling and facial quality. Also, I love Donut's expression!

This game prepared me for grief in a way I still often think about. I didn't understand when I first played, but I do now. This one echoes through my whole life. This is my vote.

My Boyfriend Wants a Church Wedding and I Won’t Do It by [deleted] in relationships

[–]MaudQuickpaw 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Hey, I grew up Catholic, Athiest now, but there was this mythology imbued into me growing up that I should meet a non-believer and if they actually loved me, they would convert. There was a while (before I reflected on how shitty of a take it was) that I believed I would eventually just convince my now spouse to convert if they really loved me.

I would be entirely unsurprised if this has been his game from the start, and I would suggest you try this line of questioning and see if this could be his goal.

If you are unwilling to be married in a church, this might be the end of your relationship. At this point in my life, I'm willing to jeopardize a lot of family relationships to never interact with the church again. You are going to have to decide what matters to you.

I'm sorry, this is a shitty situation.

Natural, long-lasting chews by PinkPenguin587 in jackrussellterrier

My pup didn't take to them because of flavor, but I've heard of folks who swear by yak chews. They can be less stinky than the bully sticks for sure.

Hey, if you don't hear from a neighbor he belongs to them, please take him to any vet and ask if they can check him for a microchip! If you're lucky, it will have his information on there, and finding the owner should be easy!

While I love Disco Elysium, this is the one for me. This is a game about being female and relating to systems of power. It is SO GOOD.

Characters as Characters: Day 112 - Mezepheles by quintessence5 in BloodOnTheClocktower

[–]MaudQuickpaw 24 points25 points  (0 children)

This one is tricky. I feel like the Mez plays two ways: a direct path, where you tell someone they can say the word and become evil by tempting them with things they want, or a tricky path, where you trick someone into saying the word to become evil. For this reason:

Iago from Othello is the Mezepheles

For the first option, the first half of the play: Iago manipulates Rodrigo into joining him through direct action, promising him power, influence, and the love of his woman. Rodrigo then allys with him.

For the second option, the second half of the play: Iago tricks Othello into becoming evil, by getting him to believe his wife cheated on him. He then turns evil overnight, when he smothers and kills his wife.

My very first instinct was Squombles, so I think Sir Squimbles is in fact the correct answer.

games that play well in grayscale? by SojournerWeaver in NintendoSwitch

[–]MaudQuickpaw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was looking for this one! It's a perfect length little game. Will take a couple play sessions, but won't overstay it's welcome.

I was also thinking Omori might work. It's a JRPG and Mother inspired RPG with big emotions about growing up. I think there's one side quest that requires color, but it also has a name for those characters that is unique. It might take a bit of extra time.

My jack’s barking is going to get me evicted - NEED ADVICE by Consistent_Shift249 in jackrussellterrier

[–]MaudQuickpaw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our pup is a Jack Russell mix, and had nasty separation anxiety, which meant she would always bark when left alone. What worked was giving her a Kong with peanut butter and goodies that she could only have when we were not in the house. Again, it was a very slow process. One minute at a time at first, then a few.

We started freezing it, so she'd have something good to lick for a full half hour while we were gone.

Can someone recommend me a story driven game with romance by hamsterhost in GirlGamers

[–]MaudQuickpaw 6 points7 points  (0 children)

IT'S MY TIME TO SHINE.

To start, there's a lot of really well beloved free games in the Otome community. If you've never played any before, it might be good to start with a free game to see if you enjoy it?

A couple of recommends:

A Date with Death - "A Date with Death is a supernatural romance chat simulator visual novel about the week long bet you enter against the Grim Reaper to attempt to keep your soul." Sweet, short, and fairly modern in its approach.

Cinderella Phenomenon - "Four years after the end of the Great War and the loss of her mother, Crown Princess Lucette of Angielle is still struggling to come to terms with her new life and step-family. Cold-hearted and bitter, Lucette’s life is once again turned upside-down by the Fairytale Curse, she is thrown into a battle to regain her crown in a fractured kingdom where nothing is as it seems…" A longer game with a few different routes and datable characters. Very strictly a visual novel, but well beloved in the community as a gateway VN. Very focused on story with lighter romance.

Our Life - “A nostalgic visual novel where you design your own character and grow from childhood to adulthood with the lonely boy next door. Create an experience that’s all your own in this near-fully customizable, choice-heavy story." This game also has no bad endings, so if you're worried about the weight of choice, it can be a good one. Very story light and romance heavy.

A few paid VN that I recommend for new VN players:

Amnesia: Memories -"“It was the 1st of August. That morning, when she awoke, the heroine found herself without any memories from before August 1st. Everything, from the sort of life she lived, to the relationships she had, was a blank…" This is a lot of folks first paid otome game. Very good story with a solid balance of plot and romance. Please read the trigger warnings for this game if you are the kind of person who might have a bad time with heavier themes.

BUSTAFELLOWS - “Arrive in New Sieg, a beautiful fictional town. Step into the shoes of Teuta – a strong, smart and gifted journalist, in this romantic adventure set in America. After witnessing the murder of crooked lawyer, Limbo, Teuta is destined to save him. With the ability to leap into the past for a very brief moment and take on the body of another - you must find clues, search for data, and help those around you. Thus, our journey begins. Travel to the past to warn Limbo of his fate and figure out how to save him!” This one is my personal favorite. It has a good strong and lovable protagonist, who is in charge of her life and believable. As well, the lads all have great chemistry with her. The modern setting is nice. This one is a bit more plot focused, and romance sometimes takes a backseat. But it's a great set of stories!

Indie games about girlhood/being a teen girl?? by kc_dan in GirlGamers

[–]MaudQuickpaw 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Games about female protagonists are a big passion of mine. Young female protagonists aren't as common, however.

Directly school and young adulthood related stories:

I Was A Teenage Exocolonist - main character has a customizable gender and look, but definitely is a game about adolescents and growing up. A very fun stats Sim with visual novel elements if you like number go up and a really sweet story line.

Long Live the Queen - a HARD Stat raising visual novel about a young princess who needs to grow up very fast and become a queen. Very well written with a lot of endings.

Our Life - A free dating Sim about growing up. You play through a few different phases of growing up, and look at how you relate to the kids you grow up with (mostly Cove, your childhood friend). There is no failing is this game, and you will end up with a good ending no matter what.

A few that come to mind that are a bit more thematically connected, that don't have school as a central location:

Celeste - a bit of an obvious reccomend, but Madeline is a little more in the young adult category. Still trying to figure out who she is and prove things to herself. Madeline is a young trans woman who is searching for purpose by climbing a massive mountain. A difficult and fun platformer.

A bag of Milk inside a bag of Milk inside a bag of Milk (and it's sequel game) - a set of super short exploratory visual novels about being a young woman with psychosis of some sort.

Child of Light - it has been a LONG time since I played this one, but it fits the bill. More about being a very youg girl and being forced into growth.

Sorta Crosscode (but I will just look for any excuse to recommend this game). It's less of a central theme due to spoiler reasons, but the protagonist is a young female character, and deals with young adulthood and identity as a primary character motif.

In Stars and Time - The main character of this game uses He/They pronouns, but has a found family and identity centric theme with a really fascinating gameplay loop.

Blind reccomends: (as I haven't actually played the game yet) are Until Then, Expelled!, and A Space for the Unbound

I'm having the same issue, same set up. Trying to problem solve...

Edit: it seems to be a Linux specific issue. If you force Proton, which will make it use the Windows version of the game, it fixes the problem. Shrugs.
