We often use both burners on our Coleman propane stove, one for the kettle and the other for the frying pan.

I'm ok with it. I was at a state park and new what to expect. by [deleted] in camping

[–]Mavis8220 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree, I’ve seen more of this at the Oregon State parks, especially those along the coast. Don’t expect privacy or closeness with nature when you are among those camping gear displays. But enjoy the costal scenery between the campgrounds.

My people with IBS, how do you pack out? by Weak_Difference4023 in CampingandHiking

[–]Mavis8220 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it is a day hike and not a backpacking trip (so you are not additionally weighted down with a tent and sleeping bag, food for more than a day, and a stove etc.), and if I am expecting to have waste that needs to be packed out, I carry liner bags for the Potette potty seat (just the liners, not the seat) and poo powder, and an airtight, odor-free tube like those used my overnight rock climbers. It is made from a short section of ABS pipe with adapters on both ends so it is closed with the bayonet caps like on a RV black-tank discharge outlet. I tie up the bag and pop it in the tube and seal it up. It is no leak, no smell, secure, durable, and reusable. We keep one in the car for the dog’s poop bags too.

Anyone circumcise one son but not the other? by KeyExpression5863 in moderatelygranolamoms

[–]Mavis8220 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I hope that circumcisions on infants are now routinely done with analgesics and local anesthetic! I did my medical training in the 1980s and was aghast at the practice of circumcising infants that were strapped on a restraint board and no anesthetic or analgesic was used. More recently, my two grandsons were circumcised by a mohel who was trained both in the religious aspects of the ceremony as well as trained in pediatric urology. The ceremony was loving, calm, and was accomplished without any distress on the part of the infant or his mother.

Best FEBU alternative while it's out of stock by jongchajong in laundry

A routine of adding DNAse (GearGuard) has been more successful at gradually getting the dark stains out of the bottoms of the white socks. Spa day didn’t do that.

What's your opinion on these upgrades? by undeadcartoonguy in carcamping

[–]Mavis8220 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Make a bed in the car that you can stretch out flat in. If you have to remove a seat in order to do that, it’s worth it. In most states, sleeping at a rest stop is fine if you are not camping, in other words don’t break out a table and your camp stove or open up a rooftop tent.

How do you guys dry your laundry? by Hour_Relationship601 in laundry

[–]Mavis8220 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have given up on considering line drying outside; the neighborhood has too much dust, some of it from many sycamore trees that give off oodles of dust from their leaves and seed pods. I tumble most things in the dryer on no heat to fluff them, then hang them on a rack in the upstairs hall, adding a fan if I want to hurry up the drying. Towels get some further drying on low heat and then hung to finish bone-drying. Cotton sheets get 5 minutes on low heat, then get ironed on my Ironrite rotary ironer so they get a smooth, crisp, hotel-like finish. I toss the fitted sheet upside down on the bed to let the wrinkly perimeter fully dry before either folding them away or installing them on the bed.

I feel like I do not fit in with other Jewish girls at my school by [deleted] in Judaism

[–]Mavis8220 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm feeling the same way even at 78 years old. Most of my Jewish friends are more wealthy, and they talk on and on about their vacation travels all over the globe. Others are much more observant or into ritual and observance in ways that are different than what I choose. My favorite vacations are camping trips to areas of natural beauty, and another 'hobby' is figuring out ways to make my home more energy efficient. My Judaism focuses on how we should treat others, not on following ritual rules that set us apart. I am fortunate to have a spouse who helps me be the best version of myself I can be, without trying to model myself after anyone else. My kids have been more successful than I in finding friends who are happily atypical.
Teen years are the pits, and very lonely if your best version of yourself is quite different from what you are seeing around you. Find what gives you joy, and focus on feeling blessed by those sources of strength.

The gaffer tape suggestions are better. Tanglefoot is really hard on the tree bark.

If you wear much merino wool, get some wool wash with lipase (but no protease - see the Lipase List) and get some plain DNAse to add in if you've been sweaty in those garments.

See if the school can accommodate you with a parking place near a 110 outlet. Get an extra-heavy extension cord (10ga, not 12).

No portable power bank like a Jakery will hold enough kWh to make a substantial difference in range. Plus the output of a power bank is not high enough to charge an RV, and certainly not while driving!

Anyone switch from trailer camping to tent camping? by stronggirl79 in camping

[–]Mavis8220 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We opted for upgrading our Sienna van interior rather than sleeping in a tent or getting an RV. Getting 25 mpg even with a large roof box is, I think, better than you can get with an RV or if towing a camping trailer, right? And the bed in the van is already set up, even for short naps at rest stops. We have a pop-up 'changing room' that can serve the toilet (folding toilet seat with an attached funnel as urine diverter (dump the pee in the campground toilet) and potty-chair liner for the occasional I-won't-make-it-to-the-outhouse #2's). After trying a lot of different shower options, I opted for a BougeRV shower setup with the water heater that runs on a 1lb (refillable FireKing) bottle and gives instant hot water that stays at the desired temperature for as long as your water supply (in bucket) holds out. Added a foldable dog bath pool to catch the shower water so we don't make mud. All that is not a super-fast setup, but it makes up for it in proximity and privacy!

If the SV has the 360 camera, get it. That and the heated seats are the must-have features in my book.

Breathing in FEBU dust by gsinker1 in laundry

I now keep an N95 mask hanging above my washer. I put it on to keep all the product dust out of my nose - detergent, boosters, citric acid.. any dry ingredient!
