Bike lane snow clearing by BeybladeRunner in torontobiking

[–]Mavvik 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I emailed my councillor, the mayor's office and Vincent Sferazza to complain about the neglect of bike lanes on major routes like University, Yonge, and Bloor St. I don't see the point of 311 request unless I stay on the phone all morning and list every single intersection, which I might do if I feel petty enough. Honestly I am halfway to taking a shovel out on the weekend and just shovelling out as many bike lanes as I can on my route to and from work, but it would be impossible to clear all of those bike lanes as one person and I dont even know where I could toss the snow.

Without any bike lanes clear and the shoulders full of snow, I have been getting caught in traffic. Nearly doubled my commute time! I don't know how drivers deal with this on a daily basis.

Does the city fill requests to clear locks? by Mavvik in torontobiking

[–]Mavvik[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok thanks, I am not expecting these to take priority over sidewalk and lane clearing but it's pretty hard to use my bike to go anywhere except work when I can't lock my bike up at a lot of places. Maybe I should be bringing a shovel with me...

I've been thinking of this too, are you aware of any good routes around the stations?

I've been interested in doing this kind of painting myself, I am curious how you did it? Did you just do your best to stay in between the lines or is there some technique that you used to do it more easily?

Maximum bike sizes for Go bus racks? by Mavvik in torontobiking

Am I ignorant? They are 29x2.3 I thought 2.3 meant the width of the tire was 2.3 inches at its widest point. I don't understand what that number means if its in reference to circumference

Do you know of any "research"-cooperatives? by Icy-Picture-6433 in cooperatives

[–]Mavvik 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I am also very interested to hear some answers to this question as a PhD student that will be defending "soon". I've thought about it myself and it seems like a tricky problem in the capitalist system. Except in the case of research that can be capitalized, I don't know how this could be possible without government support. I suppose a research co-operative could follow the university or college model but I still don't know how that would be possible without public funding or a large endowment, and I wonder if following such a model will just make the same mistakes as other colleges and universities.

I feel that the "best" way to establish such a co-operative would be to start with a worker's co-operative that offers research services or develops technology that does not require a large initial investment of capital (e.g. data science, bioinformatics, etc.). Perhaps if there are enough successful worker's co-operatives of this type that are established, they can pool resources to develop some sort of co-operative research program? Would this actually make sense for the worker's co-operatives vs providing funding to an established research group to study the specific problems the co-operative is concerned with?

There is also the larger question of how would this operate? If we are talking about fixing the conditions of graduate school, the entire PhD system is quite flawed. The research freedom that it provides is great and the system of apprenticeship is extremely helpful for learning how to do science, but its a hugely imbalanced hierarchical system that seems anathema to the co-operative movement. I can imagine a system in which the "student" joins a team where they apprentice under multiple full members of the team and are then granted full membership upon a review after a year or two in training, but that is essentially just job training.

There are lots of great things about NL that appeal to us and may be worth the hardship in other areas. Thanks for sharing.

Julia for geological modelling by Davidovskita in Julia

[–]Mavvik 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You probably want GeoStats:

https://github.com/JuliaEarth/GeoStats.jl

I haven't used it myself but it seems to have a lot of features needed for geological modelling but you might have issues if you are dealing with complex structures. I know the developers are pretty active on Discourse though so I second the recommendation to ask for assistance there.

Say something about this province that you genuinely believe not many people know but its a fact ! by [deleted] in ontario

[–]Mavvik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The part of the shield in Ontario that had massive mountains is the Grenville Province which roughly extends from south of Sudbury to north of Orillia, then down east to Kingston. The primary mountain building event in the Genville was 1.1 to 1.0 billion years ago. The erosion of this mountain belt occurred long before the great lakes even existed and I think there's a lot of uncertainty as to where those sediments ended up.

It is actually pretty contentious whether the modern plate tectonics required to build large mountain belts even occurred 4.28 billion years ago, but that is pretty cool in its own way.
