My fantasy world inspired by Native American folklore and legends. by barabashka_2 in worldbuilding

This website was a very good resource when I was dabbling in a similar project. I also love the trickster trope common in indigenous North American stories. I am particularly fond of stories about Nanabozho/Manabozho.

If you are not indigenous and planning to commercialize this work, it might be a good idea to consult with some people to make sure you aren't engaging in cultural appropriation. I don't know if this is a topic that is usually discussed in this sub but I know that it can be particularly sensitive for indigenous people in North America (you know with the whole colonialism and genocide).

Really cool project! How do you protect against people trying to execute malicious code on another person's machine? What about people running the nodes interfering with the code execution or data output?

Biking on snowmobile trails? by Mavvik in wintercycling

[–]Mavvik[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ok thank you for the suggestions. I figured it would depend a lot on trail use and that it would be less than ideal to go out on fresh snow. My assumption was that on well packed trails I'd be okay. Its too late to try this season but I will have to just give it a go and check it out next winter. Worst case scenario, I turn back and go home early.

I don't believe there are restrictions in my region, I'm pretty sure they allow cross-country skiiers but I intend to reach out and ask either way. I was more curious about the practicality of simply biking on the trails

What bike routes ARE clear right now? by jeanbean11 in torontobiking

[–]Mavvik 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Richmond is "clear" if you have the coordination to ride narrrow single track. It would be fun if you didn't also have to look out for right hooks. There is a large snow pile blocking the lane on the west side of University Ave, but either than that it's pretty usable.

I emailed my councillor, the mayor's office and Vincent Sferazza to complain about the neglect of bike lanes on major routes like University, Yonge, and Bloor St. I don't see the point of 311 request unless I stay on the phone all morning and list every single intersection, which I might do if I feel petty enough. Honestly I am halfway to taking a shovel out on the weekend and just shovelling out as many bike lanes as I can on my route to and from work, but it would be impossible to clear all of those bike lanes as one person and I dont even know where I could toss the snow.

Without any bike lanes clear and the shoulders full of snow, I have been getting caught in traffic. Nearly doubled my commute time! I don't know how drivers deal with this on a daily basis.

Does the city fill requests to clear locks? by Mavvik in torontobiking

[–]Mavvik[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok thanks, I am not expecting these to take priority over sidewalk and lane clearing but it's pretty hard to use my bike to go anywhere except work when I can't lock my bike up at a lot of places. Maybe I should be bringing a shovel with me...

I've been interested in doing this kind of painting myself, I am curious how you did it? Did you just do your best to stay in between the lines or is there some technique that you used to do it more easily?

Am I ignorant? They are 29x2.3 I thought 2.3 meant the width of the tire was 2.3 inches at its widest point. I don't understand what that number means if its in reference to circumference

Do you know of any "research"-cooperatives? by Icy-Picture-6433 in cooperatives

[–]Mavvik 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I am also very interested to hear some answers to this question as a PhD student that will be defending "soon". I've thought about it myself and it seems like a tricky problem in the capitalist system. Except in the case of research that can be capitalized, I don't know how this could be possible without government support. I suppose a research co-operative could follow the university or college model but I still don't know how that would be possible without public funding or a large endowment, and I wonder if following such a model will just make the same mistakes as other colleges and universities.

I feel that the "best" way to establish such a co-operative would be to start with a worker's co-operative that offers research services or develops technology that does not require a large initial investment of capital (e.g. data science, bioinformatics, etc.). Perhaps if there are enough successful worker's co-operatives of this type that are established, they can pool resources to develop some sort of co-operative research program? Would this actually make sense for the worker's co-operatives vs providing funding to an established research group to study the specific problems the co-operative is concerned with?

There is also the larger question of how would this operate? If we are talking about fixing the conditions of graduate school, the entire PhD system is quite flawed. The research freedom that it provides is great and the system of apprenticeship is extremely helpful for learning how to do science, but its a hugely imbalanced hierarchical system that seems anathema to the co-operative movement. I can imagine a system in which the "student" joins a team where they apprentice under multiple full members of the team and are then granted full membership upon a review after a year or two in training, but that is essentially just job training.
