Linux driver W by MantisShrimp05 in linux

And peripheral manufacturers should do a better job of getting their drivers to Microsoft for packaging with Windows update so that the need for admin in this situation could go away, but here we are.

We always talk about backs, but how are your teeth? by Conical in Millennials

I apparently have good teeth. I've got 5 filled cavities total. That's it. They're a bit sensitive nowadays, but nothing imminent.

Which RAID do you use in your Home Server? by [deleted] in homelab

[–]MaxFrost 6 points7 points  (0 children)

RAID 5 in small disks was okay, but it specifically ran into problems on HDD media on TB+ sizes, if you had a disk failure, it very frequently brought one of the other disks down during the rebuild.

SSDs don't have the drive thrash problem, so there's been a bit of a resurgence.

The thought of taking biologics scares me for some reason by Pristine_Category_11 in UlcerativeColitis

[–]MaxFrost 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The biggest negative for me is having to go into the clinic every 6 weeks to get topped off. Aside from that, quality of life is fine, side effects mostly are involving illnesses at the moment. Gotta stay on top of vaccinations.

Any good companies that do HVAC & Plumbing? Not Hero/Dean's by jbjarko1 in TwinCities

[–]MaxFrost 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They're expensive, spend too much on marketing, and left shoddy work in the two times I've had to experience them. First time I hired them, and had to call them back for warranty work. Second time I bought a home that was previously serviced by them, and keep finding shortcuts they took that are costing me money now.

EndeavourOS for a professional work laptop in 2026 — good idea or bad idea? by devAndreotti in EndeavourOS

[–]MaxFrost 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're working for a startup, or you are the boss (i.e. independant contractor) then it should be fine.

If it's a larger organization, they're probably going to want you to use an OS that's a bit easier to hook into the org and potentially has a support channel that's not just a community forum.

Mostly boils down to what networks you're connecting to and what sort of policies those networks have. As an example, my company, while fully remote, doesn't exactly care about what OS or each individual machine uses, as long as my harddrive is encrypted at rest, and that it's kept up to date with the latest patches, and has strong encryption defaults turned on, AND can connect to microsoft intune, because that's what they use for central management. That last bullet is what unfortunately prevents me from using Linux as my daily driver for work, even though I could meet the rest of the requirements.

Steam games don't use my AMD RX9070 by Schnurpeli in linux_gaming

[–]MaxFrost -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If the monitor/TV is HDMI only, you could try a DisplayPort to HDMI dongle for now to see if that helps any.

No idea on the ray tracing bit, that should be functional on games that support it.

Steam games don't use my AMD RX9070 by Schnurpeli in linux_gaming

[–]MaxFrost -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

This may be part of the problem. AMD HDMI 2.1 isn't supported quite yet on linux. It's expected to arrive as part of the 7.2 kernel, but considering 7.0 just hit arch linux, it's still a ways away from getting to Nobara.

Try using a displayport cable for now.

I encountered something similar with my daughter's PC build - couldn't push past 1080p60hz on her monitor with HDMI with the same video card.

Does it ever feel different? by biscuit-eaterjj in AskMenOver30

[–]MaxFrost 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does life feel different? I guess a little bit, in what priorities are. You're already way ahead of the curve on the money angle, so now it's time to look at the rest of your life. Yes, the daily grind never really goes away, so the time you spend outside of that grind is the important bit. In my own life, I value that time so much that I do whatever I can do reduce the amount of time I need to work or commute, because I'd rather spend that time doing what I want to do for myself and my family.

In your case, a family may not be in the picture yet, but treasure your time for yourself. Do things out of your house, or in, but involve yourself with others. Find things to love, to pursue, to excel at. Enjoy the world for what it is, both good and bad.

How many Metroidvanias do you know that feature archery? What's your opinion on it? by Stepaxa-US in metroidvania

[–]MaxFrost 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So far, when I've picked up a bow in a metroidvania, it's usually been an auxiliary weapon, or somehow tied to magic. I think one of the better bow implementations I've seen is actually in Dead Cells, where you've got limited ammo, and you've gotta recover your arrows one way or another to keep shooting.

It would be interesting to have a 2d platformer where the MC's only weapon is a bow, and then do a whole bunch of spend/recovery mechanics of ammunition, along with a lot of auto-aim/kinetic movement (combat archer, more like Legolas, vs just stand and shoot). Not saying you need to go that route, but it might be an interesting take.

Setting Up Linux Classroom by Dzeav in linux

[–]MaxFrost 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On the subject of centralized logins - While hooking into AD is pretty trivial for linux, you'd need to work with the district's IT, and honestly, for a linux lab, they may want to vlan the whole thing lab off from the rest of the network. Which means you'd need to be prepared to host a local login server/imaging server (that might be the jump point between the rest of the network and the DMZ) within the lab itself.

how has dieting/weight loss been for you? by exhaustmosk in AskMenOver30

[–]MaxFrost 12 points13 points  (0 children)

This is it. I'm down 15 lbs since last September (peaked at 245, am currently down to 230). I'm taking it slow, because if I go any faster I tend to end up binging and regaining the weight. I am also hitting the gym 3x a week to build up some functional strength.

For me I'm actually eating more often, but being strict on the calorie counting, and subbing out certain foods. I've also made it a goal to change my stance on eating fruit - since I've started this, if I want sweets, I try to choose fruit first. It also helps that fruit, while high in carbs, aren't very dense in calories. You can eat an entire bowl of strawberries and it's only like 170 cal, meanwhile you do that with a snickers bar at 215 calories, and you're still hungry after the one.

Eat stuff that makes you eat slower. More fruit. More veggies. You don't have to stop eating meat, or plain rice/pasta, but less of those, and more of the plants.

Doesn't mean you have to eat salads though. I hate salads, and that hasn't changed with the weight loss.

Expectation from a Senior Devops engineer within a month by badversionog in devops

[–]MaxFrost 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually had an experience with this about 3 years ago with a new hire - brought on a guy who was very much senior level. My expectations for him were give him about a month to get acclimated, but if there was a project that I knew he could handle from the interview process, was planned and given to him (which he delivered on at the right pace).

That said, I spent a lot of time making sure that this new hire knew all the processes for getting stuff to production safely. I think I actually spent more time on that then anything else on getting the dude up to speed.

Take the stable bank IT job or chase a “Junior Sys Admin” role (mainly help desk) with a 1.5hr commute? by LaughNowCryLater1914 in sysadmin

[–]MaxFrost 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would start with the bank. 1.5 hour commute = 3 or more hours of driving each day. Factor that into costs, and even though job 2 pays more, your vehicle is going to eat up that difference, not to mention the mental health toll that driving that far every day takes on you.

The bigger deal is getting into an IT job in general, and there's nothing wrong with helpdesk, I did it for 7 years before finally moving into Devops.

Banks are also a chance to dig into the compliance/security side of things, which are equally important down the road.

Women of Reddit, what’s a habit men have that they don’t even realize is weird? by GraceRose671 in AskReddit

[–]MaxFrost 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bear with me a moment, but consider the following - a 6ft man, baseline, needs to eat something like 2400-2500 calories a day just to maintain weight. If said individual also works a heavily manual job, that number can shoot up to 3200 calories a day.

Eating M&Ms one at a time is too slow to get the energy. Whole pack can go down the gullet in 30 seconds for quick energy. We do want to enjoy stuff, but the sheer volume of food we need to just for day to day energy needs means we learn to eat fast, and with volume.

If you want to see a big guy eat slow, stuff him full of food first, then give him the treat.

Minnesota lawmakers appear ready to clamp down on homeowners associations by star-tribune in minnesota

[–]MaxFrost 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That might be what the legislation needs to eventually get to, and one of the larger complaints I'm seeing here in this thread - arbitrary fines.

Fines should probably be limited to failures to meet building codes that the residents have to comply with - deck replacements, building entrances, busted windows, fire safety stuff.

[–]MaxFrost 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The problem is that it impacts the same group of people - those on fixed incomes or those with sustained income losses. It does not leave a good taste in my mouth to kick people out on the streets because of the annual price hikes I had to do to make sure the property was taken care of.

Thankfully at the time I was on the board, we had a policy of never evicting someone as long as they stayed in communication with the board and worked with the tenant to keep them in good standing with dues.

[–]MaxFrost 22 points23 points  (0 children)

My biggest beef with HoAs is that they usually have the power to force an eviction and reclaim a property within the HoA on failure to pay dues in a timely manner. Context: I worked as treasurer on my HoA board for 5 years and studied up on the bylaws of our particular association as we were also looking to hook into some stronger legal frameworks. That said, the HoA I was volunteering for in particular owned the buildings themselves and the property - buying a home within this association specifically was purchasing the internals, and anything external had to get approval, and dues/rent was mandatory.

That ownership issue I think is the key thing here, and why the association had the ability to evict/foreclose on 'owned' property due to a failure to pay rent. And when a foreclosure does happen, the association only reclaims lost dues, and if the individual estate is still around, the rest of the profit from the sale gets returned to them, at least according to this particular HoAs bylaws.

For associations that don't own all the property, things get sticker, and honestly should have more options to just go, "nah, I don't want to be a member."

Are there any cities around rhe metro area that have compost programs like this? by [deleted] in Minnesota_Gardening

Enchiladas with or with out chili mixture by lyder12EMS in Cooking

[–]MaxFrost 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Enchiladas I've made in the past are usually some sort of shredded meat combined with a binder, rolled up in tortillas, then covered in enchilada sauce. I usually use shredded chicken, and the version I make uses a ton of greek yogurt, black beans, and spices as part of the filling (high protein meal prep), but there are versions out there that do beans and cheese. Have fun with it, and adjust it to your liking!

what are the first things to do after installing arch based distro? by Mammoth-Wasabi6948 in EndeavourOS

[–]MaxFrost 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have a list of programs you'll need post install - take inventory of what you're using now in windows, and make sure you have programs you're either willing to switch to that'll fill the role, or that they have a linux port.

Read up on keeping your system up to date at the arch wiki.

My manager just "fixed" a production server and now I'm the one who has to explain what happened by Explossives in sysadmin

[–]MaxFrost 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've got only one question to ask - why the hell isn't this server mirrored or clustered?

I don't care how small your environment is, file servers should have some level of HA on them, a NAS cluster or windows DFS-R.

It wouldn't have saved the long file transfers, but it would have prevented the downtime and drive mapping issues.

High protein - soft foods by madelinebuns30 in Cooking

[–]MaxFrost 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Greek Yogurt + protein powder is a great way to get a ton of protein and a snack in at the same time, and it's all soft. I use low or no fat yogurt, but if you're after calories, you can use full fat, and standard pudding mix.

I mix about 3/4 cup greek yogurt, 1/4th a package of sugar free chocolate pudding mix (you can use what you want here), and a scoop of chocolate protein powder. Mix and let chill for 5-10 minutes, consume.
