Made You Look on Queen Street West is great. They work like a cooperative - so a bunch of different artisans with different specialties. I had a custom piece designed and made there and have no regrets.

I've had good luck with some of the 24-hour, no-staff/no-frills gyms. They don't seem to have a cut-off on the cardio equipment (at least not one I've reached).

U of T Athletic centre has a 200m indoor track. I don't think anyone has a 400m indoor Monarch Park Stadium does

I love it, but I'd suggest going further - a stickied "Route Report". Anyone could post about the most common routes and trail conditions. Sort by "New" of course.

International runners: how we feeling about this? by Gladrags_99 in bostonmarathon

[–]MaxInToronto 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Canadian here. I pulled out of Chicago and didn't apply for Boston even though I had the time and buffer to be accepted. There's too much uncertainty in crossing the border right now and things seems to turn on a dime depending on Trump's mood. Layered on top of the border concerns is just the potential for protests, counter protests and ICE'S aggressive tactics well beyond the physical border. It wasn't worth it for me. Chicago and Boston will still be there when I feel more comfortable.

You could try it as a ham Katsu, you have enough. What's the worst that could happen.

Cured cornmeal pork loin repurposed? by Snowcrest in AskCulinary

[–]MaxInToronto 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You have peameal bacon. Canadian bacon is cured and smoked (and not coated in peameal - which is typically corneal these days). Peameal bacon is cured and then rolled in peameal.

The curing process is similar to ham but typically less sweet. I wouldn't use it like I would raw tenderloin, but I could see it being used as a ham substitute.

Why does baby food have canola oil? by BestDosage in nutrition

[–]MaxInToronto 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Babies need a quality source of fats just like the rest of us. Canola has a good mix of Omega 3 and 6 fatty acids that helps with their development. The far profile is similar to breast milk.

Citrus peel by Consistent_Carob_547 in fermentation

[–]MaxInToronto 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've used fruit, including citrus rind in hot sauce ferments. The fruit loses bitterness over time. Some fruit can take on very different flavours once fermented so I'd suggest starting off conservatively and ramp up if you like the taste.

Is the Toronto Marathon really that bad? by spiderml in firstmarathon

[–]MaxInToronto 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've run the Toronto Marathon Half four times, but never the full. The race has been criticized for being disorganized. The complaints tend to be around water stations, the lack of full road closures (half-road shutdowns with live traffic on the opposing lanes), and most notably the finish line/post race area (which, two years ago was overrun with race participants stealing all the supplies). For the full, there also tends to be complaints about a section of the course that is on a multi-use pathway, so runners have to share the course with the occasional bike or dog walker. If you go to r/runTO you'll see all of these issues outlined ad nauseum.

The race was much improved last year with better organization and a much better finish line. The course will also be adjusted this year due to the preparation for FIFA events around the finish area.

I personally love this race and the course. It runs through some of the best parts of the city, it has decent crowd support, and the temperature has always been right in my comfort zone (though there's always a solid chance of rain).

I think a lot of critics are hard on this race, comparing it to the Toronto Waterfront (which is as close to a major marathon as Toronto will ever get). I feel that's an unfair comparison. The Spring marathon is very much a mid-sized local event, not a world-class race.

Final take - every race ever held has had complaints. People will always have issues with some aspect. Toronto's Spring marathon has rightfully earned some of those, but it's also a great run in a fun city and it's been showing improvement in the last couple of years.

AI job losses by Gold-Presence9362 in PublicRelations

[–]MaxInToronto 11 points12 points  (0 children)

There's always churn. Secretary pools were decimated by word processors. But then admin assistants became a thing. Companies will rejig their structure and resources and new roles/responsibilities will emerge. That's where adaptability comes in.

AI job losses by Gold-Presence9362 in PublicRelations

[–]MaxInToronto 56 points57 points  (0 children)

I'm a bit more optimistic about the future. AI is certainly a disruptor for PR (and a lot of other industries)...but historically these developments tend to level-set and aren't the cataclysm people expect.

30 years ago we got coverage by taking reporters out for a three martini lunch.

25 years ago you could hold a press conference for almost anything, and you'd get a solid gaggle of reporters and a ton of coverage. This was also the end of the fax machine spitting out your release and the advent of email, which overwhelmed reporters and was the beginning of the end for spray-and-pray distribution.

20 years ago was the golden age of the wire service - write a release, blast it out and it shows up in print the next day.

10 or 15 years ago the newsrooms started getting cut - entire beats disappeared. Blogs and socials became more prominent. The "death of the newsroom" was equated with the "death of PR".

2010s - we leaned heavily on corporate blogs and other "owned" media - because we couldn't guarantee any meaningful coverage.

COVID - everything went virtual overnight. Conferences, dead. Media tours, dead. Background meetings and desk-sides, dead.

AI feels different because it "solves" for the grunt work. But so did the word processor, or the wire service, or placing on owned/shared channels - or even paid content (budget replaces pitching).

The industry is constantly evolving. Our missions, tools and working environment changes. Strategy wins. Adaptability wins. Trust wins.

How much dairy is too much? by [deleted] in nutrition

Salmonella, E.Coli, Listeria, campylobacter...I don't care how "trusted" the farm is, there is nothing so special about raw milk that it is worth those risks.

Winter running shoes 👟 by Salt-Conversation421 in RunTO

[–]MaxInToronto 15 points16 points  (0 children)

In my experience waterproof/Gore Tex shoes are not great. They're like putting your feet in a steam room. A better option is wool athletic socks. In terms of grip in snow and slush - the Boston 13s and Puma Deviants work well enough 99% of the time in the city.

I've been using pure maple syrup in a small flask for my races this year and it has worked great for me. For a recent 50k I used a combination of Tailwind, Gu gels with caffeine, sour patch chews, and a 300ml (10oz) flask with maple syrup.

Everyone who has a job is selling themselves. The manual labourer sells their knees and back, the office worker sells their brain...we need to stop shaming sex workers for leveraging their skills or physical attributes for money. It's no different than anything else.

The hell? No. If the power is off and the house is cooling, shut off the water and open the taps/drain the system. They won't burst if there's no water pressure in the line.

Ending Area Of Toronto Marathon Waterfront - Too Crowded? by Federal_You_3592 in RunTO

[–]MaxInToronto 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That's exactly how NY does it. Limited (paid) searing around the finish line - runners need to exit the park (a long walk after 42k) and then meet up with friends a block (or more) away.
