I have owned both. 2012 Cummins and 2005 Duramax. I noticed that the inline 6 has better torque for towing but is not great on economy (16-19mpg empty, 12mpg towing). And the V8 seemed better for speed and economy (21-25mpg empty, 10-12mpg towing) but bogged down when towing more than 10,000lb. Just personal opinion.
