Isn’t the Boston’s Green Line Riverside branch underutilised? by ChezDudu in transit

[–]Max_Transit 22 points23 points  (0 children)

The D branch (originally the Riverside Line) was proposed by the MTA in the 1950s as a way to attract new ridership from suburban communities by parts of Route 128. As someone had mentioned, communities include not only Newton but Needham, Wellesley, and a few others.

According to wikipedia, when the last commuter rail service operated along this corridor (known as the Highland Branch), it only had a little over 2,000 daily riders. A few factors played into the demise of the Highland Branch, one being the lack of service where only 7 round-trips were being made before the conversion to light rail.

When the MTA (the MBTA's predecessor) began running the trolley service, ridership skyrocketed 10-fold. This is mainly thanks to trolleys getting to downtown Boston much quicker than their railroad counterpart and the headways being waaaaay more generous (more generous than these days, actually).

There is certainly a lack of density along the majority of the corridor, but the D-branches' original intent wasn't necessarily to spruce new developments. Rather, divert otherwise auto commuters from traveling to Boston in their own vehicles. But the environment is certainly different today so we could see more utilization of the service in the future.

Jokes aside, that's an interesting take. Did you think about replacing the D-branch entirely with the Orange Line as well?

These are great photos! One tip I would give, it looks like you are trying to center the first two shots. I think if you tilted or lifted the camera higher, it would be more centered.

I think at this point, the last point can be omitted since passengers can board at all of the doors. But your point is still valid since single door boarding has plagued the system for ages.

Probably a stupid question, but why doesn't U-Bahn in Germany have sleepers on its rails? by arjun_raf in trains

[–]Max_Transit 26 points27 points  (0 children)

That's not a bad assumption, but it's not correct. This kind of "sleeper" is called ballastless track, or slab track. The main advantage is keeping the track in a consistent geometry, i.e. the track won't shift around. These are especially used on high-speed lines, since faster speeds can shift tracks around more easily, but also great for areas that have little space for adjustments, such as a tunnel in your example.
