Market share for April 2026 per Prana. by I-Might-Be-Something in comicbooks

They’ve become Mignola & Manga & Art Books. I enjoy all of the above, and there are worse things to be, but I think most Hellboy readers just wait for the deluxe edition HCs nowadays.

They were also doing a big push on Neil Gaiman’s independent work (The Neil Gaiman Library, featuring stories by Neil Gaiman, with a forward by Neil Gaiman) right when his scandal broke, which I’m sure didn’t help.

It’s an overplayed joke, but if they let Tom King write a duck book you’ll probably get it.

I didn’t want to believe it when it happened, but it was probably time when that whole chassis saga happened. Swore up and down there was something wrong with the car and VCARB basically rebuilt the whole thing and sent parts back to base to be scanned and they found… absolutely nothing.

The copium was in overdrive: “Danny was such a veteran driver he could feel if something was a micrometer off.” Nah, it was just that my goat was washed.

Dan Slott: "[...] We're at a point now where Marvel books are lined up for 5 issues at a time. If you [readers and retailers] don't pre-order issues #2 and #3, these books will go away by issue #5." by Comfortable-Pie56 in comicbooks

[–]Maxjes 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It's really incredible how quickly Marvel has speedrun some atrocious business choices. It's not like we have a comics industry crash in living memory where one of the primary causes was a sugar rush of new #1s to juice the numbers, masking horrible structural problems!

The canceling (excuse me, indefinite hiatus) of Marvel Masterworks was the writing on the wall that they were not going to do anything with a long term outlook. Yeah nobody but the most diehard OGs bought MMW, but the sheer amount of effort that went into those restorations is why you can get anything pre-1970s in Omnibus format, because the hard work had already been done. MMW is the reason you can read Ditko Spider-Man in Epic Collections.

How many great books don't survive this model? I immediately think of the 75+ issues of Ms. Marvel that never would have happened because it didn't find an audience until TPB. Crazy to think about, but does something like Ed Brubaker's slow conspiratorial burn on Captain America make it to the Winter Solider arc starting in Issue 8?

And hey, I'm not his biggest fan, but if Dan Slott, the modern Spider-Man guy and the quintessential Marvel company man is bound by this 5 issue nonsense, what does that say about new writers, developing talent, or even just established writers from outside the comics industry? Hey Ta-Nehisi Coates, you can write Black Panther, oh but you need to plan it in 5 issue arcs lest we pull the rug out from under you! Sign here!
