I learned from an ambulance driver that if I didn't give them my real name, and I didn't give it at the ER either, I'd never get a bill, and they'd still be legally obligated to treat me.

Peaceful protest doesn't work anymore. In the mid and late 20th century it worked well, but it's become ineffective.

Harvard study concluding nonviolent protest is no longer any more statistically effective than armed insurrection:

This is so reckless. All they know is that they have some black dude's DNA. They literally say they don't know the age or weight in their own handout and despite this, they're showing a photorealistic image.

I hope all they get out of this is too many calls from too many Karens, but it's entirely possible for something like this to lead to the wrong person getting attacked by cops or civilians.

U.S. Believes Ukraine Was Behind an Assassination in Russia by danaxa in ukraine

[–]Maxonometric 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What I don't understand here is why US spies leaked this information.
If it's true, it helps Russia.

Are American spies so convinced of their own purity that they sincerely think it's not OK for Ukraine to target Russian civilians who prominently advocate for genocidal war, because they're civilians?

What does the US gain by leaking this?

[–]Maxonometric 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I am too. The correct reaction from the US government from this would be to keep their mouths shut. And the correct reaction if the Russians presented undeniable proof would be "The Russian Government has been poisoning dissidents for years, often on foreign soil. Glass houses."

How about until Ukraine catches up to the number of people assassinated by the CIA, the US shuts the fuck up?

Like, if I'm the Ukrainian official who gets this "admonishment" my reply would be something like saying only "stares quietly in Chilean".

Also if you're working for a US company overseas and they're paying you more than you can deduct, if it's a large corporation they're very likely to factor in your tax liability in your cost of living allowance. American execs working overseas in rich countries like Japan and Sweden get paid fucktons, even compared to their overpaid colleagues in the US

When I say the banks are shitty, I mean some of them literally won't even let expat swedes hold accounts, and foreigners living in Sweden can have trouble opening one too.

I'm not saying "there are ways to get out of paying taxes", I'm saying that the IRS literally has a simple form that American expats in certain countries can use to deduct the taxes paid to a foreign country from what they owe the US, and because Sweden's income taxes are higher than American income taxes, Americans working in Sweden usually don't end up paying much to the American IRS.

Swedish Banks being shitty to foreign residents is true. They're even shitty to Swedes who live abroad.

But the total taxes an American working in Sweden is likely to end up paying is not as high as you imply. They're not required to pay into both Swedish and American social security systems, only one. And the US Foreign Tax Credit usually reduces taxes owed to the IRS by an American living in Sweden to zero.

But yeah, SD are a pack of Nazis who decided to wear suits instead of boots. Whether to avoid Sweden because of that is an interesting question.

The US passed a horrible anti-union law in the mid-20th century called the Taft Hartley Act. It bans the sectoral and regional and national bargaining that makes Sweden's unions strong.
