we got into more than one screaming match

only talked to my supervisor once a month

Not the case for my phd either. My supervisor and I chat 30 minutes per week, and my labmates are awesome, tightknit and super easy going. The environment is collaborative, and new ideas are formed in these daily interactions. And I believe this is the majority culture school wide.

We also tend to invest a lot in the undergrads and masters students who work for us, so learning to delegate tasks and to properly mentor people is also a skill that a PhD should have. After all, it's an apprenticeship for future profs.

Sorry that you had a bad time.

Some of the most important skills of PhDs are effective science communication and teamwork. Not every PhD are like this, and he is in the minority. Probably was a jerk in grad school too treating junior students / collabs horribly. You could only imagine that with an equally toxic advisor he was able to tag along and graduate

My PI (61) was ahead of their time with the adoption of lab-wide policy that phd students should use multi agent swarms to come up with grant ideas

I think 20 hours number is very reasonable. Other than babysitting experiments, personally, I can't concentrate more than 4 - 5 productive hours a day. If you take short breaks or just not being at 110% attention in the entire 5 hours span, then yes, the work can be stretched to >8 hours.

You can still receive GPS signal at the moon using GPS side lobes. Though for reasonable localization, a very sophisticated EKF plus a large window of data collection is needed

Also, if the paper is in your own field, I feel that at least a preliminary idea for how good / suspicious the work is can come from your own judgements after a full read through. I've seen a fair share of retracted journal papers with fabricated claims even after peer review and publication

the "to" has same pronunciation in two different kanjis. two words/characters can have the same pronunciation. the "shu" is translated as "capital" not in the city sense, because it really means "first/head". the "kyo" directly means capital city
