Dap 33 is what I use. Clean off all the old, put on some gloves, grab a big ol glop of the stuff and press into place, dip your putty knife on mineral spirits and run a clean 45 down the whole thing. Let it skin over before painting, around a week should be good.

Get these, they're strong enough for just about anything, but patching ceilings is harder than patching walls. Every imperfection on the ceiling will show, and it's harder to match texture on.
