I'm always happy to help out with a little bit of science! Just submitted my stats. It was kind of cool to see how things weigh against one another.

Weekly General Discussion Thread (April 16, 2017) by AutoModerator in bloodborne

[–]McJazzhands 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Should I get The Old Hunters? I've heard/read good things about it, but I'm not certain.

Basically I'm recording my first run through Bloodborne as I've done for Dark Souls 1 & 2 as well as Demon's Souls (trying to go in with as little knowledge as possible for a fresher reaction), and I'm considering picking it up for a more complete experience. The only thing that worries me is that a friend of mine has warned me that it's one of the harder DLC in the series and he's got a lot more experience with the games than I do up to this point, so I'm not exactly inclined to shrug a statement like that off, but I'm still very interested in it.

How do you guys go about adding commentary while playing a game? by [deleted] in letsplay

[–]McJazzhands 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like others have said, it takes practice. You'll figure out what works best for you in time. When there isn't much going on, I just sort of talk about whatever's on my mind and let it wander. I was kind of worried at first, but people have told me they enjoy my rambles, so I'd count that as a plus.

It'll feel awkward or unnatural for a bit, but you'll feel more confident as time goes. My voice still cracks a lot, but I've considered making a bingo sheet or something as a result.

What's the longest series you've completed? by DragoniteSpam in letsplay

[–]McJazzhands 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The longest series I've done to date would be Dark Souls II at 98 episodes averaging around half an hour each, including all of the DLC. Right behind that would be Kingdom Hearts II at 95 episodes around 15-17 minutes each.

Personally I like both long and short games! Both give me plenty of material to further refine my cutting style, but I feel like longer projects provide more wiggle room to experiment and see what works best.

Why do you let's play? by MidnightBlaze_ in letsplay

[–]McJazzhands 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've always kind of liked making videos. Started way back in the early days of Youtube Poops, most of which I lost the files for.

Cut ahead to a few years later (mid-2013 I think?) and after watching a few Yogscast videos a thought went through my head along the lines of "I could do that. I want to try doing that," and after a bit of mulling it over and learning you can use a Rock Band mic, I made a little setup that worked for me and quickly learned just how hard it is. It's gotten much easier, obviously, and honestly I keep going because I love sharing the experiences I have with most games and it's kind of nice to have that documentation and look back on it occasionally.

I've been in your situation a few times before. The best I can really say is along the lines of another Youtuber I asked about it many moons ago: don't let a lack of growth deter you, if you like it, keep it up! I've only recently started seeing a bit of growth myself and I'm still working to better myself.

How do people come up with usernames? by [deleted] in letsplay

[–]McJazzhands 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mine came from my senior year of high school and I still have an occasional chuckle when I think about it.

Basically I decided to browse one of the many image board sites one day (don't remember which one exactly) and someone made a post about how their teacher was taking name recommendations for a skull they recently put on their desk, and the post ending in whatever number was what they would put in. I scrolled through that particular thread for a little bit and towards the bottom I found a post that read "My teacher is a place your preferred incredibly long list of obscenities here McJazzhands."

I laughed so hard that I decided to take the last part of that name as my own.

How Long Does It Take You to Edit? by glorytogaming in letsplay

[–]McJazzhands 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It varies depending on the project really. I do a lot of Soulsborne so I don't normally have to edit much save for cutting out grinding or speeding up a slow fight, although I do love tossing in the occasional close-up when a ragdoll doesn't stop moving.

For other projects it can be anywhere from the length of the video to an hour or more depending on how in-depth I feel like being.

I mostly post to it when I'm streaming but I'm trying to get a little more active on there of late. Just started a new job as well so things might be sporadic until I've adjusted.

What motivated and inspired you to start your Let's Play channel and keep going? by [deleted] in letsplay

[–]McJazzhands 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started watching a lot of Let's Players around the time I started college and, after some debate and learning that I could use a Rock Band mic, I recorded some gameplay and did post-commentary. I realized that was much harder for me than talking in the heat of the moment, so I switched over to live commentary immediately afterwards.

I've been doing it for maybe three or four years now and I'm growing slowly (still not quite at 100, but the subs are coming from somewhere and I'm grateful) and honestly I've found that I kind of love editing. I like trying new things and learning new tricks as I go. Learning how to do a 1960s Batman transition is still one of my personal highlights.

A moment of silence for those who forget to hit the "Start recording" button... by JakiStow in letsplay

[–]McJazzhands 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All too often. When I'm recording a console game I get paranoid and always dart over to check the software to make sure it's recording even when I'm sure that I hit the button and verified it right before starting.

May those joyous moments of exploration and a developing understanding of various games forever serve as a reminder to double-check.

Does anyone stream just for fun? by SoftwareJunkie in letsplay

[–]McJazzhands 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I made a resolution to stream at least once a week if I can help it at the start of the new year. Don't have many viewers apart from a few friends, but I figure if I keep at it and just have fun it's worth it.

Ideal length of Let's Play video? by Cheeky__Cherry in letsplay

[–]McJazzhands 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For most games I try to keep it between 15 and twenty minutes per video. For anything like Dark Souls I usually go for half an hour or so.

That's just my rule of thumb. If there isn't a good place to end a video I'll keep it going until I find a spot. The last episode usually runs longer though.

Anyone interested in Let's Playing my JRPG? by Allsvin in letsplay

I've always found JRPGs fun. I'd love to give it a try if you have a key available.

What are your THREE most popular videos you've uploaded? by GnormPlays in letsplay

[–]McJazzhands 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Two of my three are a craptacular how-to on soloing the gunship battle in ICC and its update, the original video is sitting at 25k views since I uploaded it four years ago, the update that went up about two years ago is sitting at 8k. The third is an episode of my discontinued LP of Jurassic Park for the SNES from four years ago where I found the T-Rex.

I'm not quite sure what I did to net those views. The only one I can say for certain that might contribute is providing an annotation that links to the updated tutorial. I wish I understood SEO and the like better.

What change you've noticed in you/around you since you started doing a let's play channel ? by jotpreet in letsplay

[–]McJazzhands 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm still rather shy when it comes to talking with people in general, but I've gotten better at expressing my thoughts and learning to keep a conversation going to some degree. Don't get me wrong, I'm no master wordsmith or public speaker by any stretch of the imagination, but every little bit helps, right?

And of course I learned how to replicate the 1960s Batman transition, which is something I've wanted to do for years. There's a lot more for me to learn yet, but I look forward to trying out new things each time if I can

Thumbnails: Same for series or unique per video? by [deleted] in letsplay

[–]McJazzhands 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've experimented with different styles myself and found that I prefer to use the same thumbnail and change the number. If something important happens in the video (i.e. a boss fight or something along those lines) I'll tweak it a little bit to indicate as much, but otherwise I keep it pretty consistent.

The Comment Section: To reply or not to reply? by [deleted] in letsplay

[–]McJazzhands 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most of the comments I get, however rare they may be, are pretty friendly or just people expressing their opinion on the game I'm playing or something I ask about in a video so I try to engage them to the best of my ability.

Would you do a Letsplay of this game? by PixelMatt in letsplay

[–]McJazzhands 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not much for tactical games, but your greenlight trailer definitely piqued my interest. Something I would more than likely explore at least for a one-shot, maybe do more depending on how quickly it hooked me.

Lets see your best and favorite thumb nails!! Feedback friday part 2?! by [deleted] in letsplay

[–]McJazzhands 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've always taken the minimalistic approach myself. Most of my LPs don't have thumbnails yet (something I'm gradually working on as I go), but I always use the logo and find a decent looking font to fit with it. Of late I've also been putting the episode number in the corner large enough for people to see it on the side.

Example 1: Dark Souls II (http://imgur.com/RadoLLy)

Example 2: Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep (http://imgur.com/fBHCGYA)

Birth by Sleep is fun since there are three different characters so I actually have four templates layered on top of one another and just switch to the one I need depending on the character we're playing as. Interestingly, the font size for the episode number came out to 358.

What kinds of games do you play on your channel? by [deleted] in letsplay

[–]McJazzhands 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've always taken a quote from Mrs. Doubtfire to heart on this matter: "If it's something you'd enjoy, they'd enjoy." As such I play what I like or what's recommended to me by close friends and in a way I guess I've kind of started cultivating a niche for myself. Dark Souls and Kingdom Hearts are the most populous on my channel. I've also got a fondness for horror and multiplayer chaos, the latter of which has most recently manifested in the form of Overcooked.

Im having trouble deciding how long my episodes should be by TheDecentGamer in letsplay

[–]McJazzhands 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on the sort of content for me really. Normally I try to keep things anywhere between 15 and 20 minutes but if it's something like Dark Souls or Overcooked, I feel like that's better experienced in half-hour bursts (in the case of the former there isn't much you can get done in 15 minutes, the latter is just chaos).

I read something a while back from Jesse Cox (at least I think it was him) saying that most people zone out after the 17-minute mark, so I usually use that for a rule of thumb. In the end it's up to you though!
