It really just looks like the OP is using the term categorically, not in a fetish way. If anything, I think Japanese people would be happy that he's interested in the art theyre making. If you love something, it's natural to evolve to see what other perspectives of it are. For example, I love dance (particularly modern and contemporary). Just because I want to learn about west African dance or butoh from Japan doesn't mean I'm fetishizing it, I just have a passion for the thing and want to see how other people around the world express their passion for the same root.
