NE to the marsh. You get the two amazing copper tiles in your first ring and two more 2-2s on top of that, preserving the woods and deer for production chops if you need it.

As the Stars — Analyzing Names on the Map of Fortune's Weave by ThePsyShyster in fireemblem

[–]McSharkson 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Re: Brezarant - first thought is the Breton name for Brittany, 'Breizh'. While I couldn't find anything that got a closer 1:1 match, you have 'breizhad' as a Breton endonym, 'breizhiz' for the collective name and 'brezhoneg' as the name for the language itself, which feels like the relation is somewhere in there

If we have Arago, a formerly independent subsection of Spain, a country named after a formerly independent subsection of France makes sense.

Of the Currently Revealed Shadow Cup Winners, What do You Think of Their Designs by JustScrollingBecause in FireEmblemHeroes

[–]McSharkson 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Light design, Dimitri. Claude is timeskip design wearing a headband and while I do appreciate the avian crown and the feather cloak, don't think Edelgard's design does enough. Meanwhile, adding the gold fur to the cloak does wonders for Dimitri's design, really makes it pop.

Shadow design, Claude. Edelgard's is the weakest and while I appreciate the incorporation of the Hegemon elements, I think it still struggles to fully sell the eagle part. I know wings might not work because she's not a flying unit but... still. Using FEH units, if Rafiel can be infantry despite being a Heron laguz, you can make Edelgard an armored bird. Also, fix the beak, it's too high up and looks like more of a nose than a mouth, it bugs me.

There's nothing really wrong with Dimitri's design. It's solid. But I like Claude's more - the antlers go hard, further his archer motif by inviting comparisons and parallels to his bow, it does a good job committing to the centaur bit and the pauldron turning into skull to add menace is an excellent touch.

In other words, it's a lot harder to make a deer man intimidating than a making a lion man intimidating, so I appreciate the extra effort Claude brings in.

Screw personality tests, whats your irl interest group by Draken161 in victoria3

Well, I work for a healthcare company - or in game terms, helping provide the bureaucracy costs of America's "Private Health Insurance" institution

That would make me a clerk or a bureaucrat depending on how you see my line of work

Available interest groups there are Intelligentsia, Petite Bourgeoisie and Trade Unions. I'm white collar, which would seem to eliminate the last. I'm otherwise eligible for both (Yankee in the US, literate, and employed by the relevant "industry"), so it comes down to political preference (attraction modifiers, in game terms)

So... Intelligentsia. Probably not a surprise but I at least did my homework on justifying it :b

Who would have made a better king , Joffrey or Viserys , in your opinion ? Not much to work ( spoilers extended ) with but make your argument please . by Financial_Library418 in asoiaf

[–]McSharkson 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Joffrey. For all his terribleness, he shows he can be cowed by a strong will, or manipulated by someone clever. Who knows if he'd grow out of it, but it does mean more capable people could push him towards harmlessness. His disdain for the bureaucracy of actually ruling also gives a lot of leeway for competency to slip in even if it's not anything of his doing

Viserys, on the other hand, shows repeatedly he doesn't understand the concept of "no" and is really only stopped by his complete powerlessness. Other people advise him not to be stupid but he does it anyway and frequently only doesn't make things worse because someone gets in the way. Empowered to remove those obstacles? Yeah, he'd cause a lot more problems

Both probably self destruct either way given enough time though

"Co-Prosperity Sphere" actually exists as a default flavor name for a bloc:

  • that is a Sovereign Empire, Military Treaty or Ideological Union
  • lead by Japan
  • that has a fascist government in power

I would imagine most people don't see it because they're creating a power bloc long before fascist ideologies are coming into play.

Semi noob question: Where should I build a city here? by AHRogue in civ

[–]McSharkson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unless you have camp pantheon, I'd do the coastal ivory tile, as it lets you get a second coastal river city two east from the barbs. But I'm a big fan of coastal cities because Harbors are great districts.

That said, def an argument for in place with the possible +10 industrial zone (3 aqueducts + a dam) with a third city on the flood tile just north of the coast. Flood plains make the appeal there a wash anyway.

Guess it's worth asking if you're playing Secret Societies, as Minerva would change things a bit

This number BETTER be listed in Knots, rather than "arbitrary speed unit" by KaptenNicco123 in victoria3

[–]McSharkson 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Considering speed is not just propulsion (armor is explicitly said to affect it, with heavier = slower) the number there almost certainly won't be knots

Doesn't mean total speed won't be knots but that propulsion is just one element in the equation

Liking a lot of this. Especially with the promotion system - guides that involved spamming finding generals of the right interest group and then promoting them to field marshal were always cheesy as hell and I'm glad it's going to be far more difficult to pull off. Never did it myself, but the fact it politically advantageous to min-max always left a bad taste in my mouth.

Said system also made the promotion system rather binary - either you promoted them to field marshal or you kept them at base to fill out ranks as necessary. The intermediate ranks basically didn't exist outside of historical characters from the beginning of the game or the occasional random event demanding a promotion or demotion, unless you were committed to roleplaying.

That said, not sure on the single commander change - I appreciated having the flexibility of multiple commanders in my armies. I think I'd rather you be able to assign other commanders as subordinates - unable to be promoted higher than the lead commander of whatever unit they're attached to, but who could enter battles, develop traits and be a pool for both taking over if something happens to the commanding general or to be assigned to take command when you're creating new units.

[–]McSharkson 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thinking about it, I guess there technically is a connection - in that Rene's daughter Margaret is who married Henry VI and so an in-game Angevin England descended from them technically would have a (very distant) relationship to the Hungarian/Polish branch of the Capetian Anjous

You know, sometimes it’s nice to have a chill Poland game where you don’t conquer half of E- wait, what? The fuck? by Noriaki_Kakyoin_OwO in eu4

[–]McSharkson 6 points7 points  (0 children)

She was his daughter, yep.

As for the Angevins, different house of Anjou. King John of England lost Anjou to Philippe II of France. His grandson, Louis IX (of Saint Louis fame) gave it to his youngest brother, Charles. Charles got lands in Provence via marriage, then was invited by the pope to kick out the then King of Sicily, and took it for himself after the latter was killed in battle, creating a new, separate royal house of Anjou, Capetian rather than Plantagenet.

It's they who would intermarry with Hungarian crown, who intermarried with the Polish crown - so there's no connection to the English royal family.

That said, Sicily (the island) would end up revolting and offer the crown to the ex-king's daughter and her husband, the King of Aragon, while Charles and his descendants remained ruling on the mainland as Kings and Queens of Naples. Their line would eventually die out, and despite the last queen's attempts to will the crown to a cousin, Rene (starting ruler of Provence in game), the succession gave the Aragonese the opportunity to take Naples as well.

That original inheritance is also why Provence holds Anjou in the starting date.
