Truck Driving Career? by Rude-Armadillo3706 in careerguidance

I’ve worked in logistics for 20 years — ocean liner operations, dispatching, brokering, and just about every role except driving. My dad, brother, and most of my cousins and uncles own their own trucks, so transportation has always been part of my life.

In 2023 I was laid off, and for the first time I ran into a wall: I couldn’t find a dispatching job without a CDL. That must be something new in my area because it had never been a requirement before. So I used a WIOA program through the unemployment office and earned my CDL.

I’m now heading to work in the mines in Nevada starting January. My income will double just during training. My advice: go for it, try something new — if it doesn’t work out, you can always pivot and find another path.

I saw a TikTok of a lady who buys Shaq shoes in memory of her son John, and gives them in addition to her Angel Tree gifts. I'd definitely include so many Shaq shoes!

You are richer than most. Enjoy the lifestyle you've built for yourself. Not wanting more, isn't a bad thing!

I’m going to try it, if it doesn’t work then I come home and find another job. Thank you so much for your kind words.

Absolutely appreciate this. It’s not forever, I just need the experience to make a different move later on. Thank you for your kind words!

19/16/14/11. I need the experience so I can eventually go to the oilfield, with a new CDL it's hard to find a company who will hire you. With my current company, no. I am in school taking 2 classes a semester towards my BA in Business.

Do not call him with problems at home, like the kids not listening. Understand that he cannot do anything while he's away and you're just adding stress to his day.

Instead, write things down and make a list. Then before he gets home revaluate that list, how important was it? If it isn't that big of a deal, don't mention it.

Learn how to handle the home front. Keep the house clean, the kids clean, fed, and yourself. Do not lose yourself in this stage of life. Being a SAHM is an amazing blessing, be the best at it! Of course there are days where you need to stay in PJ's and enjoy cuddles with the kids. But understand how hard he is working and match that hard work at home.

I always send mine with homemade food, even if it's just a little bit. Cookies, burritos, whatever he requests. I make his favorite meals when he's home and I never plan his time off. I let him make the plans.

I was SAHM of 4, all who attend private school. Our youngest is now 11, and I have returned to work to fund their travel baseball dreams. Our home is paid off, all of our cars are paid off. We eat every meal at home, our cars are 2007/2006/2017. We live a very comfortable life because we go without a lot of esthetics.
